Unit tests describe a small scope, integration tests describe collaborating parts, and functional tests describe the behavior being checked. Those labels are not mutually exclusive: a test can be functional in purpose and unit-level or integration-level in scope. To choose the right test, identify the requirement, the parts included, and which dependencies are real or mocked.

What separates unit, integration, and functional tests?

Testing terminology is not perfectly standardized. Google’s guide to automated testing types notes that names do not have particularly rigorous definitions. The most useful distinction is to treat scope and purpose as separate axes:

  • Scope: How much of the system is included? Unit tests focus on a small unit; integration tests include collaborating parts.
  • Purpose: What question does the test answer? A functional test checks whether behavior meets a requirement.

So “functional” does not tell you whether the test runs a function, component, API, or complete application. State both the behavior being checked and the test boundary.

Unit tests: a small target in relative isolation

A unit test checks one small code unit, such as a function or method, while keeping collaborators controlled. For example, a JavaScript calculateTotal function could be tested with ordinary, boundary, and invalid inputs, asserting the returned amount. The defining feature is the limited target—not a particular test framework.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Functional tests: behavior tied to a requirement

A functional test asks whether the software does something users or the business require. For example: “When a shopper applies a valid discount code, does the displayed order total reflect the discount?” That behavior could be tested at unit, component, API, or browser level. “Functional” alone does not specify the scope.

Integration tests: collaborating pieces together

An integration test checks that multiple parts cooperate. It might mount a checkout form with its actual validation and state logic, or submit a request to a test API and verify the response contract. The useful detail is which collaborators are included—and which are replaced with mocks or other test doubles.

End-to-end tests: a user journey across the assembled app

An end-to-end (E2E) test follows a broader path through an application, often using a browser and backend. A checkout example might enter a discount code, submit the order, and verify the confirmation. E2E tests are integration-oriented, but they include more layers and can fail for more reasons than a narrow test. Browser tests can also be more susceptible to flakiness.

Which test scope should you choose?

Need Useful starting scope What it tells you Trade-off
Check calculation or branching logic quickly Unit Whether a small unit returns the expected result for chosen inputs Does not prove that real collaborators behave correctly
Check a component with meaningful dependencies Component or integration Whether selected parts cooperate in the chosen environment Requires more setup than a small isolated unit
Check an HTTP contract API or integration Whether an endpoint returns the expected status, body, headers, or other contract details Needs a running backend or test service and does not cover the rendered UI
Check a critical journey across layers End-to-end Whether the assembled app supports that journey Broader and often slower; failures can have several causes, and browser tests can be more prone to flaking

Use focused tests where they cheaply protect important behavior, then add broader checks for risky boundaries and critical user journeys. There is no evidence-based universal percentage or fixed pyramid shape that suits every application.

What do JavaScript testing tools actually test?

A tool does not define a test’s category. The test’s scope and environment do. Cypress, for example, documents end-to-end, component, API, and accessibility testing as distinct practical types; its testing-types guide explains their boundaries.

  • Component: Cypress mounts a component without visiting the full application URL. This can check a component and its behavior, but passing component tests alone does not show that all application layers work together.
  • API: Cypress sends HTTP requests directly and inspects responses. This can verify endpoint behavior without covering the user interface.
  • End-to-end: Cypress describes a test that runs from browser through backend and potentially third-party services. That wider path offers broader coverage, with more setup and more possible failure points.

When describing any test, specify whether it uses a real browser, backend, database, or network, and which dependencies are mocked. “Integration test” without those boundaries can mean different things to different teams.

How should you choose a JavaScript test runner?

Start with the application’s framework, runtime, and existing build and test setup. Then choose a tool that can exercise the boundary you need in an appropriate environment. A library name alone does not make a test a unit or integration test.

Handle asynchronous tests explicitly

For asynchronous JavaScript, the runner needs to know when the work has finished. Jest’s asynchronous testing guide explains patterns for promise-returning and callback-based tests. For example, a Jest test should not both use the done callback and return a promise; choose one completion mechanism so the runner can determine when to finish.

Vue projects: align with the build pipeline

Vue’s testing guide says projects created with create-vue use Vite and recommends a unit-testing framework that shares the project’s configuration and transform pipeline. It points to Jest principally for an existing Jest suite being migrated to a Vite-based project. This is Vue-specific guidance, not a universal ranking of test frameworks.

How to describe a test so its meaning is clear

Instead of relying on a single label, summarize the test along these dimensions:

  • Behavior: Which requirement or risk does it check?
  • Target and collaborators: Which function, component, service, or application layers are included?
  • Environment: Does it run in a function runner, DOM, browser, API environment, or against a backend?
  • Dependency boundaries: Which services, databases, network calls, or third-party integrations are real, and which are mocked?
  • Trade-off: How much setup does it need, how easy are failures to localize, and how susceptible is it to flakiness?

For instance, “functional checkout test” names a behavior-oriented purpose but leaves the scope unclear. “Browser E2E test: submits a valid discount code against the test backend and checks the confirmation page” communicates both the journey and important boundaries.
