Akshay Kadam’s SitePoint tutorial shows how to build a Tinder-inspired mobile interface with Expo, React Native Elements and sample data. It is a UI demonstration—not a working dating app: the tutorial covers Home, Top Picks, Profile and Messages screens, but does not describe authentication, live profiles, matching or a backend.
What the tutorial builds
The 2019 SitePoint tutorial replaces an Expo tabs starter with four screens. Its focus is the visible structure and navigation of a familiar dating-app layout, using dummy profile and conversation content rather than real users or service data. Read the SitePoint tutorial.
- Home: A card deck displaying a sample profile image, name and caption.
- Top Picks: A collection of profile tiles mapped from sample profile data.
- Profile: A profile-oriented screen, included as part of the four-screen navigation.
- Messages: A list of sample conversations, with avatars, titles, subtitles and chevrons.
The tab bar uses icons and screen navigation, while SafeAreaView helps keep content inside device-safe areas. The examples are useful for understanding how the screens fit together; they do not establish how to build or operate Tinder’s service.
How the swipe-card interface works
For the Home screen, the tutorial uses React Native Elements’ Tile to present each sample profile and react-native-deck-swiper to display the cards as a deck. Its examples describe properties including cards, renderCard, stackSize and infinite: these control the supplied card data, card rendering, visible stack and looping presentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That creates a swipeable visual interaction. The tutorial does not connect swipes to saved likes, match creation, persistence or server-side behavior. Those features require application logic and data services beyond the interface it demonstrates.
What to update before adapting the code
Use current Expo setup guidance
The SitePoint article dates to 2019 and lists Node 11.14.0, npm 6.4.1, Yarn 1.15.2 and Expo 2.16.1. Treat those as historical versions, not as a recommended toolchain today. Expo’s current introductory tutorial describes building for Android, iOS and web from one project; start with its current setup instructions rather than copying old CLI commands. See Expo’s introductory tutorial.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

Check the UI library’s current package instructions
The old tutorial installs and imports react-native-elements. The React Native Elements project now documents installation using @rneui/themed and @rneui/base. Check the project’s current installation documentation and adapt imports and component examples to the version you choose; do not assume the older snippets work unchanged. See the React Native Elements project.
Verify the swipe library against your Expo project
Kadam says the tutorial pinned react-native-deck-swiper at version 1.5.25 because the then-latest 1.6.7 pulled in react-native-view-overflow, which did not support Expo at that time. That is a historical compatibility statement, not confirmation of present-day compatibility. Expo advises assessing third-party libraries for the project in which they will be used. Check the Expo SDK and library guidance before adopting a swipe package, and evaluate whether it supplies the deck behavior you need. Review Expo’s third-party library guidance. The swipe library’s repository documents its features, but does not by itself establish compatibility with your chosen Expo SDK. See the deck-swiper project.

A practical adaptation sequence
- Create a current Expo project: Follow Expo’s current tutorial for project setup and the platforms you intend to support.
- Install the current UI toolkit: Follow the React Native Elements project’s documented package instructions, then adjust the tutorial’s older imports and component usage.
- Build the screen structure: Recreate the Home, Top Picks, Profile and Messages destinations and their tab navigation. Keep safe-area handling in the layout.
- Render sample content: Map sample profiles into tiles and sample conversations into list rows so you can develop the interface independently of a backend.
- Add the deck interaction: Choose a swipe library only after checking its documented behavior and compatibility with your project. Wire swipe events to application state only if you intend to add actual likes or other actions.
- Implement service features separately: Authentication, live profiles, matching, message delivery and persistence are outside the tutorial’s demonstrated scope; design and build those as separate application capabilities.
What “clone Tinder” means here
In this tutorial’s context, “clone” means recreating an interface pattern: tabs, profile tiles, a card deck and a message list. It does not mean reproducing Tinder’s product, data or matching service, and the tutorial does not claim affiliation with Tinder. Use it as a starting point for a visual prototype, then make deliberate choices about current dependencies and any real app behavior you add.
