In a browser, use idle callbacks or prioritized tasks for work that can share the main thread, yield between chunks of long work, and use a Web Worker when computation must leave the main thread. In Node.js, timers provide approximate delays inside a running process—not durable jobs or exact deadlines.
Choose an API based on the work
First decide whether you are writing browser JavaScript or Node.js. Browser scheduling APIs coordinate work on a page’s event loop; a worker has a separate execution context. Node timers schedule callbacks in a running Node process. None of these browser callbacks or process-local timers, by themselves, provide a persistent job that survives page closure or process termination.
| Need | Use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Optional browser work that can wait for a quiet moment | requestIdleCallback() |
May be delayed while the page is busy; a timeout asks that it be attempted, not that it run by a precise deadline. |
| Browser work with an explicit urgency level | scheduler.postTask() |
Priority influences scheduling, not execution context; feature-detect this limited-support API. |
| A long browser task that should let the page respond between chunks | scheduler.yield() |
Yields control; it does not make the computation parallel. |
| CPU-heavy browser computation that should not block the UI | Web Worker | Runs in a separate context and communicates with the page through messages. |
| One-off or repeated approximate work in Node.js | Node timers or promise-based timer utilities | Callbacks are not guaranteed to run at the requested time or in a particular order. |
Schedule optional browser work during idle time
requestIdleCallback() asks the browser to run a callback when it has idle time. The W3C describes cooperative scheduling as a way to avoid delaying higher-priority work such as input processing, animation, and frame compositing. The cited specification is a Working Draft dated 21 May 2025, not a finalized W3C Recommendation: W3C Cooperative Scheduling of Background Tasks.
Use the callback’s deadline to keep each chunk bounded, and schedule another idle callback if work remains. A timeout is useful when work should not be deferred indefinitely, but it is a liveness tradeoff: the callback can be made eligible even when the browser is not idle.

function scheduleOptionalWork(task) {
if ("requestIdleCallback" in window) {
return window.requestIdleCallback(task, { timeout: 1500 });
}
return window.setTimeout(() => task({ timeRemaining: () => 0, didTimeout: true }), 0);
}
The fallback defers one callback; it is not equivalent to idle scheduling because setTimeout() does not supply an estimate of available idle time. Code using the fallback should therefore treat the supplied deadline as having no available time and keep its work small. For API behavior and limitations, see MDN’s requestIdleCallback() reference and MDN’s Background Tasks API guide.
Assign urgency to browser tasks with scheduler.postTask()
scheduler.postTask() schedules a callback with an optional priority, delay, and abort signal. Its documented priorities are user-blocking, user-visible (the default), and background. These labels express urgency; they do not move work to a worker or create a separate thread. The call returns a promise that resolves to the callback’s result or rejects if the task is aborted or the callback throws. Handle that rejection:

The fallback preserves deferral, not native priority, cancellation, or every scheduler behavior. MDN marks the API as limited availability and not Baseline; detect it before use and choose a fallback appropriate to the browsers your application must support. See MDN’s Scheduler.postTask() reference and MDN’s Prioritized Task Scheduling API guide.

Yield between chunks of long browser work
For a long asynchronous operation, divide the work into manageable pieces and yield between them so the browser can handle other tasks. scheduler.yield() is documented for window and worker contexts. It gives other work an opportunity to run; it does not run your computation in parallel.
async function processItems(items) {
for (const item of items) {
processOne(item);
if ("scheduler" in globalThis && "yield" in scheduler) {
await scheduler.yield();
} else {
await new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, 0));
}
}
}
The timer fallback is a way to let the current task finish before continuing, not an equivalent scheduler yield. Keep individual chunks short enough that one chunk does not itself monopolize the main thread. Details of yielding and task priorities are in MDN’s Prioritized Task Scheduling API guide.

Move CPU-heavy browser work to a Web Worker
Lower priority does not prevent a synchronous computation from occupying the browser’s main thread while it runs. If CPU-heavy work must not block the UI, use a Web Worker: it has a separate execution context, and the page and worker exchange messages. MDN’s Background Tasks API guide identifies offloading work to workers as a way to prevent main-thread stalls. A worker is a different choice from idle scheduling or yielding, which coordinate when work runs but do not move it out of the context doing the work.

In Node.js, setTimeout() schedules a one-time callback after a delay, and timer APIs can also support repeated work. Node’s documentation cautions that the callback is not guaranteed to run at precisely the requested delay or in a particular order. As the Node.js v26.10.0 Timers documentation puts it, “The callback will likely not be invoked in precisely delay milliseconds. Node.js makes no guarantees about the exact timing of when callbacks will fire, nor of their ordering.”

For promise-based code, the node:timers/promises module provides a delay that can be cancelled with an abort signal:
import { setTimeout as delay } from "node:timers/promises";
async function runLater(signal) {
await delay(1000, undefined, { signal });
await doWork();
}
This waits approximately one second in a running process. It is not a real-time deadline, and it cannot ensure the work runs if the process stops. Node’s timer handles also have runtime-specific behavior, including whether they keep the event loop alive; consult the documentation for the Node version and API you use. In the v26.10.0 documentation, promise-based timer utilities include interval iteration, while timersPromises.scheduler.wait() and .yield() carry an Experimental stability label.
When a timer or callback is not enough
If the job must survive closing a browser tab or stopping a Node process, or must meet a precise deadline, do not treat a browser scheduling callback or process-local timer as a durable job system. The APIs described here establish no persistence, retry, duplicate-execution, distributed scheduling, or time-zone guarantees. Those needs require a separately evaluated persistent scheduling or queueing system with guarantees documented for the actual application.
