The eight JavaScript dock-menu examples in SitePoint’s roundup are historical starting points, not a verified list of plugins ready for modern production. The roundup first appeared on June 26, 2012, and was updated November 11, 2024; that update date does not establish that each linked project was retested. The entries range from a CSS-and-JavaScript tutorial to jQuery and Dojo fisheye effects, so compare their documented approaches and independently check maintenance, browser support, and accessibility before adopting one.
What a JS dock menu does
A dock menu is a navigation bar built around icons, commonly with a Mac-style effect in which nearby icons enlarge as a pointer moves across them. That visual effect is different from application-panel docking: a panel layout lets users move, group, or resize work areas within an interface.
The eight examples below are described in SitePoint’s historical roundup. Its descriptions provide a useful picture of the approaches, but do not establish present-day support or compatibility for most entries.

How to choose among them
Start with the interaction
Decide whether the navigation needs pointer-driven magnification, rollover enlargement, or the Corner Dock’s central-icon arrangement. A hover-centered effect needs particular scrutiny on touchscreens and for people navigating by keyboard. The roundup does not provide a verified device or accessibility matrix, so test the actual implementation rather than assuming those interactions translate well.

Account for dependencies and placement
The tutorial is described as CSS plus a little JavaScript. Several entries use jQuery, while Dojo Fisheye depends on Dojo. The CSS Dock Menu example is specifically described as supporting top and bottom positions, and Corner Dock is described as customizable. Do not assume the other examples offer particular placement or appearance settings without checking their own documentation.
Verify project health and fit
Before using any legacy entry, check its repository or project page for recent activity, release history, license, supported browsers, documentation, and issue handling. Also test integration with your own dependencies, responsiveness, performance, keyboard operation, and touch behavior. The 2024 update to the roundup alone is not evidence that its linked projects remain maintained or compatible.

Two useful points of comparison
EgaK/Javascript-dock: a small menu-style example
The EgaK/Javascript-dock README describes a “Javascript Mac OS X Dock like menu,” with simple <ul> markup and data-icon font-glyph attributes. Its maintainer calls it “Very small (~ 1KB)”; treat that as a project claim, not an independently verified measurement. The available description does not establish its current maintenance status.
Dockview: application-panel layout, not an icon dock
Dockview describes itself as a zero-dependency web layout manager with tabs, groups, grids, split views, drag-and-drop docking, touch/mobile support, floating groups, and popout windows. Its repository lists JavaScript and React, Vue, and Angular packages. That makes it relevant when “dock” means arranging application panels, not when the goal is a small magnifying icon navigation bar.

Dockview’s repository says its packages are MIT except dockview-enterprise, which is proprietary and governed by a commercial license. Check the specific package’s shipped license and current terms before adopting it. The repository also provides npm installation commands; use the instructions for the package and framework you select.
Practical decision
If the need is only a visual dock effect, first decide whether pointer-based icon magnification is an appropriate navigation pattern for the people and devices using the site. Then favor an implementation with acceptable dependencies and demonstrably usable keyboard and touch behavior. If the requirement is movable, resizable application panels, evaluate a docking layout manager such as Dockview instead; it addresses a different interface problem.
