Before installing it, verify that the package and its dependencies work with your PHP version and CI workflow.
What is Atoum?
Atoum is a framework for writing and running unit tests in PHP, serving a similar purpose to PHPUnit and SimpleTest. Its documentation describes it as “a unit test framework like PHPUnit or SimpleTest, but it has a few advantages over these” (Atoum documentation, “What is atoum?”).
Atoum’s documented style combines fluent assertions with BDD-like structural keywords such as given, if, and, and then. Project materials also describe object and native-function mocking, test isolation, and report generation. These are documented capabilities, not independently established performance advantages.
How do you install Atoum?
Atoum’s installation guide describes Composer, PHAR, and source-checkout routes. Its Composer command is:

composer require --dev atoum/atoumThat command comes from the project’s installation instructions, not a guarantee of present-day compatibility. The repository was archived on July 2, 2026, so first check the package’s current release and PHP constraints, then confirm it installs and runs in the same environment used by your continuous-integration (CI) pipeline. The project’s older PHAR and source instructions should likewise be treated as historical guidance until you verify the download and dependencies (Atoum installation guide; Atoum source and installation overview; Atoum GitHub repository).
What does an Atoum test look like?
The project documentation shows test classes extending atoumatoumtest and using fluent assertion methods. A minimal example of the documented style is:

}The assertion reads as a chain: test that the value is a string and that it equals the expected text. The exact class and runner setup should follow the Atoum version you have verified, rather than assuming an older example matches a current PHP installation.
Atoum vs. PHPUnit
Both frameworks are intended for PHP testing, but their syntax, integration choices, and present maintenance status differ. The Atoum project documents its own feature set; its claims about speed or isolation should not be read as a controlled comparison with PHPUnit.

For a new project, an actively documented framework is generally the lower-maintenance choice. PHPUnit’s official site lists version 13 as current stable; verify that version’s PHP requirements before choosing it. Its PHAR installation documentation is available for PHPUnit 12.5, so do not assume instructions for that version also apply unchanged to version 13 (PHPUnit 12.5 PHAR installation documentation).

The Atoum PHPUnit extension documents a compatibility path: change a PHPUnit test case’s parent class from PHPUnitFrameworkTestCase to mageekguyatoumphpunit (Atoum PHPUnit compatibility extension). This is a mechanism to help adapt a suite; it does not establish that every test, assertion, mock, or test-runner integration will work without changes.

If you need to assess a migration, try a small, representative subset first. Include tests that use the suite’s typical assertions and mocks, and run them through the same CI configuration you depend on. Check failures and runner behavior before deciding whether to migrate more broadly.

Should you use Atoum today?
- For a new project: Prefer a framework with an active support and release path unless you have a specific reason to choose Atoum and have verified the package and dependency compatibility you need.
- For an existing Atoum suite: A pinned dependency may still run in your environment, but the archive does not establish future maintenance or compatibility. Validate your PHP upgrades and CI changes before relying on it.
- For a PHPUnit migration: The extension offers a documented compatibility route, but test representative cases and runner integration rather than assuming a whole-suite conversion is automatic.
