Pure.css is a small, modular CSS framework that provides a foundation for common website styling and layout—not a JavaScript application framework. Its modules cover base styles, buttons, forms, menus, tables and grids. For responsive grid behavior, include the separate grids-responsive.css stylesheet; the framework’s rollup files do not include grid stylesheets.
What Pure.css includes
Pure is designed to give a project useful CSS building blocks without imposing a heavily styled visual system. Its documented modules include:
- Base styles built on Normalize.css
- Buttons and forms
- Menus and tables
- Grid layout, including responsive grid classes in a separate stylesheet
The default look is intentionally minimal. You can combine the modules you need and add your own CSS for the application’s visual identity. Pure supplies CSS, not the JavaScript behavior or application architecture associated with a JavaScript framework. The project repository documents its source, output files and BSD-3-Clause license; consult its license text for legal details.
How to add Pure.css to a project
The official site provides a CDN stylesheet URL for Pure 3.1.0. For a quick start, add the CSS link to the document’s <head> and include the responsive grid stylesheet separately if your layout needs responsive grid classes. Use the exact current include and instructions on the official Pure site, rather than assuming the core stylesheet contains every module.

If you prefer not to use a CDN, Pure can also be installed from its npm package or built from source using the repository’s documented process. Check the package and repository documentation for current installation and build instructions before choosing commands; the available evidence does not establish one universal command or workflow for every project.
How Pure’s responsive grid works
Pure’s grid uses .pure-g as a row wrapper and pure-u-* classes for columns. The grid is mobile-first. To use its responsive classes and breakpoint-specific behavior, include grids-responsive.css in addition to the relevant grid CSS.

Choose a rollup or individual modules
Pure’s customization guide offers responsive and non-responsive rollups, as well as separate files for base styles, buttons, forms, grids, menus and tables. The important distinction is that grid stylesheets are separate from the rollups. If you choose a rollup, add the grid stylesheet your layout requires rather than treating the rollup as a complete responsive-grid bundle. The customization guide describes the file options.
Version and compatibility details
Version signals differ by source. At the time documented, the official site identified itself as built with Pure 3.1.0 and provided a jsDelivr URL for purecss@3.1.0; npm search also showed 3.1.0. GitHub’s releases page labels 3.0.0 as the latest release. These are distinct signals, not a single agreed version label: check the package or release source relevant to your installation. The repository says Pure is tested with the latest stable Firefox, Chrome and Safari. The 3.0.0 release notes say Internet Explorer support was removed. Treat those as the project’s stated testing scope and release note—not as a guarantee for every browser, version or embedded web view. Verify compatibility against the browsers your own project must support. The details appear in the repository and release notes.

Pure’s published size figures are not identical: its homepage says all modules together are 3.5KB minified and gzipped, while the repository README says 3.7KB minified and gzipped. Both are project-published claims, not independent measurements, so they should not be presented as one settled figure. The homepage also notes that selecting only needed modules can reduce the amount used. Check the homepage and repository README for their respective claims.

When Pure.css is a good fit
Pure is worth considering when you want a modest set of CSS foundations and common components, prefer to write much of the visual design yourself, and are comfortable selecting the stylesheets your layout needs. Evaluate it against your project requirements rather than bundle size alone:
