WebStorm’s Angular support can speed up everyday work through templates, inspections, navigation, refactoring, and integrated run-and-debug workflows. These 12 practical tips are an editorial selection of documented features—not an official JetBrains ranking. Menu names and keyboard shortcuts can vary by WebStorm version, operating system, and selected keymap.

Find files and commands faster

1. Open Search Everywhere

Press Shift twice to open Search Everywhere, then search for a file, symbol, IDE action, tool, or setting instead of navigating menus. It is useful when you know what you want but not where WebStorm put it. See JetBrains’ WebStorm keyboard shortcuts guide for the feature and its shortcut.

2. Learn shortcuts you use repeatedly

WebStorm has shortcuts for editing, navigation, refactoring, debugging, and other tasks. Start with actions you perform often, then confirm the binding in your active keymap: shortcuts can differ by keymap and may conflict with operating-system or third-party commands. Use the IDE’s menus or shortcut settings to check the binding before committing it to memory. The shortcut guide explains how to work with WebStorm key bindings.

3. Let Key Promoter X surface shortcuts

If you tend to use menus or toolbar buttons, install the Key Promoter X plugin. When you invoke a command with the mouse, it displays the corresponding shortcut when one is available. Treat the prompt as a discovery aid, and verify the binding against your current keymap before relying on it.

Use templates for recurring Angular code

4. Expand Angular component live templates

WebStorm includes Angular component templates such as a-component, a-component-inline, and a-component-root. Type a template abbreviation in a supported context and expand it to insert the scaffold, then fill in and review the generated code. Find the Angular group under Settings/Preferences | Editor | Live Templates; the exact settings label can vary by platform or version. JetBrains documents these templates in Angular support in WebStorm.

5. Make custom templates for project conventions

For patterns your team repeats—such as a common test setup or component structure—create a live template rather than retyping the same boilerplate. Templates can include variables and can be scoped to relevant contexts. In Settings/Preferences | Editor | Live Templates, add a template, define its abbreviation and template text, and choose the contexts where it should be available. Keep the snippet aligned with current project conventions: it saves typing, but does not replace review of the inserted code. See Live templates in WebStorm.

6. Surround selected code with a template

When you already have code and want to wrap it in a supported structure, select the block and use a surround template rather than adding the surrounding syntax manually. The available templates depend on the language and context. WebStorm describes surround templates alongside insertion templates in its live templates documentation.

Work directly with Angular components

7. Extract a component from a template fragment

When part of an Angular template is a good candidate for reuse, select the relevant fragment and choose Refactor | Extract Component. WebStorm uses the Angular schematics preferences in the project’s angular.json when performing the extraction. Inspect the resulting component and project changes to make sure they match your intended structure. See Angular support in WebStorm.

8. Use Angular inspections and quick fixes

Pay attention to Angular-specific inspections while editing: they can identify issues and offer quick fixes where applicable. Review a proposed change before applying it, especially when it affects a template or project-specific convention. This makes inspections useful as an in-context check, not a substitute for building and testing the application. JetBrains describes Angular inspections in its Angular documentation.

9. Jump between related component files

Angular components commonly have related TypeScript, template, and style files. Use WebStorm’s Related Symbol popup from a component file to navigate among associated files without locating each one separately. The available destinations depend on the project and component structure; JetBrains documents this navigation in Angular support in WebStorm.

Generate and reshape code with IDE actions

10. Check Code | Generate for common constructs

Before writing a recurring construct from scratch, open Code | Generate and check which actions are available in the current editor context. WebStorm also uses live templates to insert recurring elements. What appears in the menu depends on the file and caret position, so it is worth checking where you are editing before deciding an action is unavailable. See Generate code in WebStorm.

11. Use refactoring actions when code structure changes

Prefer an applicable IDE refactoring over a broad manual rename or move when changing code structure: WebStorm’s refactoring features are designed to find and update affected references. After the operation, review the diff and run the checks your project normally requires. An IDE-assisted change can reduce missed references, but it does not guarantee that every project-specific dependency or behavior is correct. See Code refactoring in WebStorm.

Run and debug the Angular application

12. Separate starting the server from attaching the debugger

The documented WebStorm workflow uses an npm run configuration to start the Angular development server and a JavaScript Debug configuration to debug in Chrome or another Chromium-based browser. Keeping the two roles distinct helps when diagnosing whether a problem is with startup or debugging.

  1. Set up the npm run configuration. Select the project’s start script or the appropriate npm script for launching its development server. Script names and commands vary by project.
  2. Set up JavaScript Debug. Configure the debugger for the local application URL and a supported Chrome or Chromium-based browser.
  3. Start the server, then launch the debugger. Once the app is available at the configured URL, use the JavaScript Debug configuration to connect and debug.

For Angular CLI-created projects, WebStorm may already generate run/debug configurations. Check the project’s available configurations before creating duplicates. The documented browser scope and setup are in Run and debug Angular applications.

Choose the workflow that fits the task

Use the discovery tools when you do not yet know an action’s name or shortcut; use a memorized shortcut when it is stable in your keymap and you repeat it often. Built-in templates are ready to use, while custom ones are more useful for patterns specific to your project and require upkeep as those patterns change. For debugging, remember that starting the Angular server and connecting the debugger are separate steps.
