Python can control macOS by asking an app to run a supported script command, or—when no suitable command exists—by interacting with its interface. A straightforward way to connect Python to AppleScript is to launch /usr/bin/osascript with Python’s subprocess.run(). The app must support the command you want, and macOS may ask you to authorize the calling app to control it.
Start with app scripting
Apple documents both AppleScript and JavaScript for Automation as macOS scripting technologies. The commands available depend on the target app: Apple’s archived Mac Automation Scripting Guide cautions, “Not every app supports scripting, and those that do may not always have scripting support for every task.” Check the app’s scripting terminology and available commands before building a workflow around it. Apple’s scripting support documentation describes the related scripting and Apple-event APIs.
For a small, reversible example, the following asks Finder for the name of the startup disk and prints the text returned by the script:

print(result.stdout.strip())This is an illustrative pattern, not a guarantee that every macOS version or app will return the same result. Replace the AppleScript with a command supported by your chosen app; confirm the osascript invocation on the macOS release you use. A successful run prints the returned name. If the process exits unsuccessfully, check=True raises CalledProcessError; the example prints captured standard error to help diagnose the failure. If a command takes longer than the timeout, subprocess.run() raises TimeoutExpired.

Make the Python process call safer
Python’s subprocess documentation recommends subprocess.run() for common cases it can handle. Passing arguments as a list, as in the example, avoids building a shell command string. Capture output when you need to read the script’s result or error message, set a timeout for operations that could stall, and use check=True when a nonzero exit status should be treated as a failure.
Avoid shell=True unless you specifically need shell behavior and understand its security implications. Never insert untrusted input into shell syntax. If you pass dynamic text into a script, also consider how that script language interprets it; a safe Python argument list does not automatically make script contents safe.

Choose the right automation route

App scripting relies on commands the app exposes; GUI scripting instead targets interface elements. Because UI automation depends on those elements and their labels or layout, interface changes can require maintenance. That is a practical consequence of the approach, not a measured reliability comparison. Apple documents querying and interacting with UI elements in its archived guide to automating the user interface. For app developers, Apple documents NSAppleScript and NSUserAppleScriptTask.
Approve automation in macOS settings
When macOS asks whether an app can control another app, identify which application is making the request—such as the terminal, Python environment, or app running your script—and approve only software you recognize and trust. Apple says you can review and change these permissions at System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation. See Apple’s current Automation permission guidance.

GUI scripting requires a separate Accessibility permission. Apple’s current instructions explain how to manage it in Allow accessibility apps to access your Mac. The requesting app may need to be enabled there before it can interact with the interface. Do not bypass either consent control.

Check the app before automating it
- Look for the app’s scripting dictionary or documentation to confirm that it supports the operation you need.
- If no appropriate app command exists, check whether the target controls are accessible to GUI scripting.
- Test with a harmless, reversible action before automating a consequential task.
- Inspect captured standard output and standard error, and handle nonzero exit codes and timeouts explicitly.
- Expect permissions to be specific to the app macOS identifies as the requester; grant only the access needed.
