Yes. In a browser, JavaScript can infer where rendered text wraps by measuring its layout with Range.getClientRects(). The method returns rectangles for the selected text, not a ready-made list of line-break offsets, so code must map text positions to rectangles and group them by line.
How to measure rendered text
Create a range over the relevant text node, then call getClientRects(). Each returned DOMRect describes an area occupied by the range. By measuring smaller spans—up to individual character boundaries—you can associate text offsets with the visual lines on which the browser placed them.
function rectsForText(textNode, start, end) {
const range = document.createRange();
range.setStart(textNode, start);
range.setEnd(textNode, end);
return [...range.getClientRects()];
}
This helper returns rectangles for one span in a plain text node. It does not determine line numbers or wrap offsets by itself. For that, measure spans at successive boundaries and group adjacent offsets whose rectangles correspond to the same line position. The CSSOM View specification describes the client rectangles returned for ranges: W3C CSSOM View Module.
Choose the right rectangle method
| Method | What it gives you | Best use |
|---|---|---|
Range.getClientRects() |
Separate rectangles for the selected range | Mapping text spans or offsets to rendered positions |
Element.getClientRects() |
Rectangles for an element’s client boxes; a multiline inline element such as a <span> can have a box for each line |
Finding the line boxes occupied by a whole inline element |
getBoundingClientRect() |
One enclosing rectangle around the element or range’s rectangles | Getting an overall bounding box, not identifying individual wraps |
MDN documents range behavior in its Range getClientRects() reference and inline-element behavior in its Element getClientRects() reference. The enclosing box from getBoundingClientRect() loses the separate line positions you need to distinguish wraps; see the CSSOM View specification.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Account for text and layout complexity
Nested markup and text offsets
If the content includes nested elements, decide whether your measurement should include all descendants. A range can span parts of multiple nodes, and the resulting rectangles may reflect geometry from multiple elements. For per-character mapping, JavaScript string offsets count UTF-16 code units: do not blindly split surrogate pairs or user-perceived grapheme clusters.
Direction and writing mode
In bidirectional text, characters can appear in a visual order different from their logical order in the DOM. Vertical writing also changes which coordinate tracks line progression. Group rectangles according to the writing mode and direction you support, and test with the scripts and browsers your application targets. The geometry APIs do not promise an automatic line-index map.

Measure after layout, and measure again when it changes
- Wait until the text is in the document and the browser has calculated its layout.
- Identify the text node or inline element to measure, accounting for whether nested descendants belong in the result.
- Create ranges for the spans you need and collect their
getClientRects()results. - Associate offsets with rectangles and group them by visual line position, using the appropriate axis for the writing mode.
- Repeat the measurement after a container resize, font load, text update, or relevant style change.
The rectangles are snapshots, not live measurements. Obtain fresh ones after layout changes, as specified by CSSOM View.

Rendered wrapping depends on the browser’s current CSS and available inline space. The white-space property affects both whitespace collapsing and wrapping: normal collapses whitespace and wraps as needed, pre preserves whitespace and only breaks at source newlines or <br> elements, and pre-wrap preserves whitespace while still allowing line breaks needed to fill line boxes. Other relevant controls include overflow-wrap, word-break, and hyphens. See MDN’s white-space reference.

Consequently, a string’s newline characters—or an element’s textContent—cannot tell you where CSS wrapped rendered text. Whitespace processing can also change what is visibly rendered while the DOM text remains present. MDN explains this distinction in Handling whitespace in CSS.
