To install the PHP browser application GitList for local repositories, download a release or nightly build, configure its repository directory, make its cache and log folders writable, and point Apache or nginx at GitList’s public/ directory. This guide is for klaussilveira/gitlist—not the unrelated Python command-line tool with a similar name.
What GitList does—and which project this guide covers
GitList provides a web interface for browsing Git repositories, including files across revisions, commit history, diffs, feeds, and other repository views. It can show multiple repositories from a directory you configure. Its name is also used by an unrelated PyPI command-line package that displays local repository status; that tool has different installation instructions.
The steps below follow the PHP application’s maintained GitHub repository.
Check the requirements first
The project README lists these requirements:
- PHP 8.1
- The
php-xmlandphp-mbstringextensions - Git 2
- A web server: Apache or nginx
Confirm that the PHP version and extensions are available to the PHP runtime used by your web server, not just to a separate command-line PHP installation. You will also need a repository directory the web-server user can read.

Install a release in your web directory

Obtain the latest release or nightly build from the project’s distribution options and extract it into the web directory where you want GitList installed. The README cautions end users against using the source release or downloading a branch or tag from GitHub; those options are for development.

In the extracted GitList directory, configure
config/config.ymlwith the path to the directory containing your repositories. Alternatively, set theDEFAULT_REPOSITORY_DIRenvironment variable to that directory. Use the configuration method that fits your deployment, and ensure the path is accessible to the web-server user.Rank #2

Create
var/cacheandvar/logif they do not already exist. Give the web-server user the access needed to read and write in both directories. Avoid making them writable by every system user when narrower ownership or permissions will work. -
Configure Apache or nginx to serve GitList from its

Open the configured site and check that GitList loads and displays repositories from the selected directory. If repositories do not appear, verify the configured path and the web-server user’s read access; if cache or log errors appear, check write access to the two
var/directories.
Choose Apache or nginx based on your setup
The project lists Apache and nginx as alternatives; it does not claim that one is categorically better. If one is already installed and you know how to configure it, using that server is usually the more straightforward path. In either case, the server must point to GitList’s public/ directory and handle the URL/rewrite configuration needed for the deployment.

Keep a local installation local
If GitList is only for your own machine, bind the service to the loopback interface or otherwise restrict network access so it is not unintentionally reachable by other devices. This is a deployment precaution, not a restriction enforced by GitList itself. Also consider repository permissions: the web-server account must be able to read the repositories you want to browse, so its access should be limited to the intended directory.

No. The project README describes its Docker Compose configuration as intended for development, not as an official production installation method. A third-party image documented in an older example uses PHP 7.2 and Alpine Linux 3.9; those dated runtime details are not a sound basis for a current installation. Before using any third-party container, verify that it is maintained and patched, check its PHP runtime, mount repositories with only the permissions required, and restrict its network binding if the service is local-only. The project’s release-in-an-existing-web-server instructions are the documented installation path.
