Elements appear outside a <div> when their rendered size or position extends beyond the space available in the container. That usually points to a size, wrapping, layout, or positioning rule—not a browser ignoring the parent. CSS leaves overflow visible by default, so content is not silently hidden. The right fix depends on why it spills and whether it should remain visible, scrollable, or intentionally clipped.
Find what is pushing the element outside
Start with the element that spills and the styles on it and its ancestors. In your browser’s developer tools, inspect the computed width and height, padding, border, margin, position, and transform. Then check the parent’s dimensions and overflow settings. Temporarily disable one likely rule at a time; if the spill stops, you have isolated a cause rather than merely hidden the result.
- Select the overflowing element in developer tools and inspect its computed box, spacing,
position, and transform. - Select the parent and look for fixed or maximum dimensions and its
overflowvalues. - Temporarily disable suspect dimensions, margins, padding,
white-space, positioning offsets, and transforms one at a time. - Determine whether the element is in normal flow, floated, placed by flexbox or grid, or positioned absolutely or fixed.
- Check whether the content itself is too large or cannot wrap.
Common reasons content spills beyond a div
The container has a constrained size
A fixed width or height, a max-width or max-height, or the logical equivalents inline-size and block-size can leave less room than the content needs. CSS treats content that exceeds an element’s box as overflow; visible overflow is the default. The MDN guide to overflowing content explains the behavior. As a diagnostic, temporarily remove the suspected size constraint in developer tools. If the parent grows and the spill disappears, the constraint or the child’s intrinsic size is involved.
The box is larger than the declared width suggests
The box model accounts for content, padding, and borders; margins add space outside the border box. Consequently, width: 100% plus padding or borders may exceed the available width, depending on box-sizing. Inspect the computed dimensions rather than assuming the declared width is the full footprint.

If you want the declared width to include padding and borders, use box-sizing: border-box:
.example {
box-sizing: border-box;
}
This changes how the element’s dimensions are calculated. It will not correct overflow caused by an oversized descendant, unbreakable content, or positioning.

Text or other content cannot fit or wrap
A long URL or code token, a wide image or table, or text with white-space: nowrap can exceed the available inline space. Check both the content’s intrinsic dimensions and its wrapping rules. Prefer a responsive size or suitable wrapping behavior when that keeps the content usable; clipping can make information inaccessible. MDN’s overflow property reference describes how content can overflow when the available inline size is constrained, including with white-space: nowrap.
A positioned element uses a different reference than expected
For position: absolute or position: fixed, the element’s containing block determines how offsets and relevant percentages are resolved. That reference is not necessarily the immediate parent: it depends on positioning and ancestor properties. Inspect top, right, bottom, left or inset properties, percentage sizes, transforms, and the ancestor chain. MDN explains the rules in its guide to layout and the containing block.

Do not add position: relative to an arbitrary div as a first guess. First identify which ancestor should be the positioning reference, then make the smallest relevant change.
Floats extend beyond the parent’s normal-flow height
If a parent’s background or border ends before its floated children, the floats may not contribute to the parent’s normal-flow height. Applying display: flow-root to the parent establishes a block formatting context that contains floats:

.parent {
display: flow-root;
}
The MDN guide to block formatting contexts describes this behavior. A non-visible overflow value can also establish a formatting context, but it may additionally clip or make content scroll, so it is not an interchangeable fix in every layout.
Flex, grid, spacing, or transforms move content outward
In a flex or grid layout, inspect the container’s layout mode and the child’s computed size, minimum size, gaps, margins, alignment, and transforms. A transform can move an element visually outside its layout slot. Temporarily disabling a suspect declaration can help isolate the cause; the exact diagnosis depends on the page’s HTML and CSS.

Choose what should happen to the overflow
Overflow settings control what happens to content beyond an element’s padding box; they do not automatically repair the sizing or positioning rule that caused it. The MDN reference for overflow documents these values:
| Value | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
visible |
Lets overflow paint outside the padding box; this is the initial value. | Spilling outside the box is acceptable. |
auto |
Provides scrolling when needed so overflowing content can be reached. | The container should stay bounded while readers can access all content. |
scroll |
Provides a scrolling mechanism even when the content may fit. | A scrolling mechanism should be present consistently. |
hidden |
Clips overflow and retains programmatic scrolling behavior. | Clipping is intentional and hidden content remains appropriate for the interface. |
clip |
Clips overflow without creating a scroll container. | Content outside the box should be clipped, with no scroll container. |
The result can depend on the combination of overflow-x and overflow-y, so inspect both axes if the behavior is unexpected.
Should you use overflow: hidden?
Use overflow: hidden when clipping is an intentional design choice, not as a general-purpose way to keep every child inside a div. It can conceal the visible symptom while leaving the underlying sizing, wrapping, or positioning issue unchanged, and it may hide content users need. If all content must remain reachable in a bounded area, consider overflow: auto; if the parent should expand, remove an unnecessary constraint or address the child’s size instead.
