Bootstrap 5’s JavaScript components work without jQuery. For common interactions, add the appropriate data-bs-* attributes to your HTML and load Bootstrap’s JavaScript. For application-controlled behavior, use Bootstrap’s component APIs with native DOM methods. Bootstrap 4 is different: its JavaScript plugins require jQuery.
Choose the Bootstrap version first
Bootstrap 5 dropped its jQuery dependency and rewrote its plugins in regular JavaScript. Its components can be used without jQuery, though Bootstrap can optionally integrate with jQuery if it is present on the page. Bootstrap 5.3 migration guide
Bootstrap 4 plugins are built on jQuery, which the Bootstrap 4.6 JavaScript documentation says must be loaded before the plugins. Removing jQuery while keeping Bootstrap 4’s JavaScript is therefore not the same as using Bootstrap without jQuery; use Bootstrap 5 or later for the jQuery-free plugin approach described here.
Use data attributes for standard interactions
For typical markup-driven behavior, put Bootstrap 5 data attributes on the relevant elements and load the appropriate Bootstrap JavaScript build. Bootstrap presents data attributes as its preferred way to enable and configure JavaScript plugins. The v5 namespace is data-bs-, as in data-bs-toggle. Bootstrap 5.3 JavaScript documentation

This approach avoids writing initialization calls for standard interactions. Follow the attributes and options documented for the component you use. Do not put multiple sets of plugin data attributes on one element; Bootstrap gives triggering both a tooltip and a modal from the same button as an invalid combination.
Use the JavaScript API when your code needs control
When application logic needs to create, inspect, or control a component, use Bootstrap’s public JavaScript API. Find elements with native methods such as document.querySelector() or document.querySelectorAll(), then call the component’s documented methods. Any selector passed to these methods must be valid CSS; unusual identifiers may need to be escaped. Bootstrap 5.3 JavaScript documentation

Bootstrap also publishes ES module builds. Its documentation demonstrates importing a component such as Toast and constructing it for selected elements. Browser module use has a dependency caveat: Bootstrap documents that plugins including Dropdown, Tooltip, and Popover cannot be used this way because they depend on Popper. With a bundler, use Bootstrap’s UMD-ready distribution files when appropriate, and include either individual plugins or the compiled file—not both.
Account for Popper and component events
Using Bootstrap without jQuery does not remove every other dependency. Dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips depend on Popper for positioning. If you include individual plugins rather than a compiled Bootstrap JavaScript build, check the documented dependencies for the plugins you select. Bootstrap 5.3 JavaScript documentation

Bootstrap components emit events such as show.bs.modal and shown.bs.modal. Handle them with native event listeners on the relevant element; Bootstrap documents using preventDefault() to stop an action before it begins. If jQuery is already available globally, Bootstrap can optionally use its plugin system and emit events through jQuery. The data-bs-no-jquery attribute on the body disables that optional integration; neither behavior makes jQuery a requirement.
Pick the integration that matches your project

What to update when migrating from Bootstrap 4
A migration is more than deleting the jQuery script. Bootstrap 5 uses namespaced data attributes and changed parts of its public API. Bootstrap’s migration guide gives data-toggle becoming data-bs-toggle as an example, and notes that static methods no longer use a leading underscore—for example, _getInstance() became getInstance(). - Update plugin data attributes in templates to the Bootstrap 5
data-bs-*namespace. - Review code that initializes components or calls their public methods for API changes.
- Check event listeners and script dependencies, including Popper where required.
- Load the Bootstrap 5 JavaScript build or individual plugins appropriate to your setup.
