background-position controls where each CSS background image sits inside its background positioning area. Use center to center an image, two values to set horizontal and vertical positions, or edge-offset syntax to specify a distance from a particular side. Percentages align points on the image and area; they are not simply percentages of the container’s width or height.
What does background-position do?
The property sets the initial position of each background image. Its reference area is determined by background-origin, so positioning is relative to that background positioning area—not automatically to the viewport or the element’s outer edge. The initial value is 0% 0%, which places the image at the top-left. See the MDN property reference.
This property moves the background image, not the element itself. Use the separate position property when you need to position an element in the layout.
How do you center a background image?
Set background-position: center; to center the image on both axes. The equivalent two-axis form is background-position: 50% 50%;.

}Centering aligns the image’s midpoint with the positioning area’s midpoint. If the image is larger than the area, part of it extends beyond the area; centering does not resize the image.
How do the values and axes work?
In the common two-value form, the first value is horizontal (X) and the second is vertical (Y). Values can be keywords, percentages, or lengths.

For example, background-position: 25% 75%; positions the image’s 25%-across, 75%-down point at the corresponding point in the positioning area. The MDN reference documents the property’s value forms and alignment behavior.
Why does 50% not mean half the container width?
For each axis, the browser calculates the difference between the positioning area’s size and the image’s size, then multiplies that difference by the percentage. In simplified form:

offset = (positioning-area size - image size) × percentageAt 0%, the corresponding starting edges meet; at 50%, the midpoints align; at 100%, the far edges meet. That is why 50% 50% centers an image regardless of whether it is smaller or larger than the area. If the image is larger, the size difference is negative, so the centered image can have a negative left or top offset. Percentages describe alignment between the image and area, not a fixed distance measured from the container.
How can you position an image from an edge?
Use edge-relative syntax when the requirement is a precise distance from a named side, such as keeping an image 20 pixels from the right and 10 pixels from the bottom.

}Edge-offset forms can include three or four values. Keep each offset associated with its intended edge; the order matters when keywords and lengths are combined. Examples documented by MDN include right 3em bottom 10px and top right 10px.
How do you position multiple background images?
Write one comma-separated position per background-image layer, in the same order as the images. For example:

Which syntax should you choose?
- Choose keywords when the intent is simply to align or center an image; they are usually easiest to read.
- Choose percentages when the desired behavior is proportional alignment between image and area, rather than a fixed pixel gap.
- Choose lengths or edge offsets when the design calls for a specific distance, such as a graphic inset from the bottom-right corner.
