STRICH is a commercial JavaScript SDK that lets a web app scan 1D and 2D barcodes using a device camera. It is software—not a physical scanner—and its scanning interface runs in the browser. Developers can integrate an embeddable reader for a custom experience or use a ready-made scanning modal.
What STRICH does
STRICH is designed to add real-time barcode scanning to browser-based applications, including web apps used on smartphones. The vendor says image processing happens on the client and barcode contents are not sent to STRICH’s service; treat those as vendor statements, not an independently verified privacy assessment. See the STRICH product site.
The SDK is described as framework-independent. The API reference provides examples for vanilla JavaScript, Angular, React and Vue, so a team can use its existing framework rather than adopting a STRICH-specific application framework. STRICH SDK API Reference

BarcodeReader: integrate the scanner into your own interface
BarcodeReader is the embeddable option. It suits apps where developers want to manage the surrounding UI and scanning flow themselves.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
PopupScanner: use a ready-made modal
PopupScanner provides an out-of-the-box modal scanner for a simpler integration. It can reduce the amount of scanning UI the app team needs to build, but offers a different level of control than an interface managed by the developer. Both integration paths are covered in the getting-started documentation.
What you need to integrate it
- Install the SDK. The vendor documents npm installation as
@pixelverse/strichjs-sdkfor bundler-based projects, or loading it through jsDelivr CDN. Its guide recommends pinning versions conservatively when scanning is a critical function. - Configure a license key. A key is required and must be configured for the app’s URL or URLs. The STRICH SDK API Reference says, “A license key is required, and can be obtained in the STRICH Customer Portal.”
- Serve the app in a secure context. Camera access requires HTTPS in production; localhost is an example of a secure context suitable for development.
- Request camera access and test on target devices. The browser must expose MediaDevices and support WebGL and WebAssembly. The vendor specifically recommends trying the integration on actual smartphones.
Installation options, key configuration and camera setup are described in the STRICH getting-started guide.

Which barcodes can it scan?
The documented symbologies cover common retail, logistics and 2D formats, but support for a format does not guarantee that every label, camera or browser will scan it reliably. Check the exact formats and real labels used in your workflow against the API reference.
| Category | Documented formats |
|---|---|
| EAN and UPC | EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E |
| Linear and related | Code 128, Code 39, ITF, GS1 DataBar, Codabar, MSI Plessey |
| 2D and stacked | QR, Micro QR, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417 |
Browser, device and connectivity limits
STRICH lists WebGL, WebAssembly and the MediaDevices camera API as runtime requirements. It does not publish a precise supported-browser-version list; it says popular Chrome/Chromium-based browsers, Safari and Firefox are tested regularly. That is not a guarantee for every version, device or camera.

Test the browsers and phones your users actually use, along with the barcodes they will scan. The vendor’s demo can help with an initial check, but an app should also be exercised in its own lighting, distance and workflow conditions.
Initialization can require an internet connection. According to the getting-started guide, a successful online license check persists for up to 48 hours; offline operation is described as an Enterprise add-on. Confirm current contract terms with STRICH if disconnected use is a requirement. Getting-started and licensing notes

The vendor advertises a free 14-day trial. Confirm its current availability and terms directly. The homepage also says an OEM license is required when customers use an integrator’s product to create additional products that incorporate STRICH. Licensing for multiple apps, OEM distribution, custom branding and offline use can affect whether a standard plan fits; ask STRICH for applicable contract terms rather than assuming a plan covers those cases.

How to evaluate whether STRICH fits
- Barcode coverage: Match the documented symbologies to the labels in use, then scan representative samples.
- Target platforms: Verify the actual phone, camera and browser combinations used by staff or customers; there is no published browser-version matrix.
- Interface needs: Choose between a developer-managed embedded reader and the ready-made modal.
- Connectivity: Establish whether the workflow can tolerate internet-dependent initialization and whether an offline licensing arrangement is available for your needs.
- Scale and licensing: Compare expected monthly scans and number of apps with plan limits, and clarify multi-app or OEM terms.
- Operational confidence: Test in the real workflow. The vendor describes the product’s capabilities, but independent comparative accuracy, reliability and performance benchmarks are not established here.
