Use JavaScript’s native Date object to get a timestamp in milliseconds: const timestampMs = new Date().getTime(); The method is not part of jQuery, and jQuery is not needed for this task.
Get the current timestamp with getTime()
getTime() is a native JavaScript method called on a Date instance. It returns the number of milliseconds between the represented instant and midnight on January 1, 1970, UTC—the Unix epoch. [MDN: Date.prototype.getTime()]
const timestampMs = new Date().getTime();
console.log(timestampMs);The result represents an instant, not a formatted local date or time. The same timestamp can display as different calendar times in different time zones. [MDN: Date]
Use Date.now() when you only need the current time
If you do not need a Date object, Date.now() is the shorter equivalent for obtaining the current timestamp in milliseconds:

Convert milliseconds to seconds
To get an integer count of elapsed seconds, divide the millisecond timestamp by 1,000 and round down:

Get a timestamp for a specific date
Pass a date-time string representing the instant, then call getTime():

const timestampMs = new Date("2026-10-05T00:00:00Z").getTime();The trailing Z specifies UTC. Prefer standardized date-time strings and include Z or a numeric offset when the intended time zone matters. In JavaScript’s standardized format, a date-only string without an offset is interpreted as UTC, but a date-time string without an offset is interpreted as local time. Non-standard date strings may be parsed differently across implementations. [MDN: Date time string format]
Check for invalid dates
If the input cannot be parsed into a valid date, getTime() returns NaN. Check for that result before using a timestamp derived from user input:

Subtract the starting timestamp from the ending timestamp to get an elapsed duration in milliseconds:
const start = new Date();
// Run the operation being measured.
const end = new Date();
const elapsedMs = end.getTime() - start.getTime();For elapsed-time measurements where precision matters, consider Performance.now(). In supporting browsers, it can provide more reliable and precise timing than Date.now(). [MDN: Performance.now()]
