Symfony VarDumper gives PHP developers a clearer alternative to var_dump(): its dump() helper presents richer details about values and can send output to a web response, the CLI, Symfony’s debug toolbar, or a separate dump server. Install it with Composer, then choose the destination that lets you inspect a value without disrupting the output you need to preserve.
What Symfony VarDumper does
The Symfony VarDumper component documentation describes a tool for extracting the state of PHP variables and a more capable dump() function to use instead of var_dump(). Its output includes specialized views for objects and resources, can show references, and supports HTML or colored command-line formatting.
VarDumper is a Composer package, so you can use it in a standalone PHP project as well as in a Symfony application. The main practical difference from a plain var_dump() call is not only how the value is displayed: VarDumper also offers ways to route debugging output away from the response or console stream you want to keep clean.
Install VarDumper and make your first dump
For development, add the package as a development dependency:

dump($value);In a Symfony application, the Symfony documentation says to ensure that DebugBundle is installed. Once VarDumper is available, call dump($value) where you need to inspect a variable. The helper returns the value it receives, so it can also sit inside an expression when you want to inspect an object and continue using it, for example dump($object)->someMethod().

Choose between dump() and dd()
Use dump() when execution should continue: it displays the value and returns it. Use dd() when you intentionally want a stopping point. Its name means “dump and die”; it dumps through dump() and then immediately ends script execution. Replacing a dump() with dd() can therefore prevent later application code from running.
Where dump output goes by default
VarDumper’s default format and destination depend on PHP’s Server API (SAPI). In CLI, it writes command-line output to STDOUT. Under other SAPIs, it emits HTML in the regular response. The Symfony documentation explains that you can set VAR_DUMPER_FORMAT to html, cli, or server to select a format.

The CLI detail matters when another program consumes a script’s STDOUT: a dump can become part of the data that program reads. Likewise, HTML inserted into a web response can alter a page or interfere with response handling.
Use the dump server to keep output separate
If inline output is inconvenient, run VarDumper’s dump server and direct dumps there. The Symfony documentation shows these commands:

./vendor/bin/var-dump-serverDumps can then be viewed in the server console or written as HTML. Set VAR_DUMPER_FORMAT=server to select server output. The documented default host is 127.0.0.1:9912, unless configured otherwise. In Symfony, debug.dump_destination can be used to set the destination.
This approach is useful when you need to preserve a response or a CLI stream for its intended consumer while still inspecting values. It does require the dump server to be running and the application to send its dumps to that destination.

Symfony applications, Twig templates, and tests
Controller and application dumps
With DebugBundle installed, Symfony routes dumps to the web debug toolbar. This avoids the problems that can arise when debug output from a controller or model is emitted directly into a response, where it may affect headers or corrupt a view.
Dump values from Twig
In Twig, {% dump foo.bar %} sends the value to the toolbar without changing the template output. By contrast, {{ dump(foo.bar) }} writes the dump inline in the rendered output. Inline output may be unsuitable in contexts such as HTML attributes or script tags, where inserted markup can interfere with the surrounding content.
Assert on dumps in PHPUnit
The VarDumper documentation also describes a PHPUnit trait with assertions that compare a value’s dump with an expected dump. This can be useful when the formatted representation itself is what a test needs to check.
Check PHP compatibility before installing
Package requirements change over time. At the time of the Packagist snapshot dated September 3, 2026, the symfony/var-dumper package page displayed version 8.1.7 and a PHP requirement of >=8.4.1. Treat those as dated registry details, not permanent requirements; check Packagist and your project’s PHP version when choosing a version to install.
