The quiet third robot gets the package in the story—but not because it looks trustworthy. It authenticates, presents a signed cargo statement tied to the key used in that conversation, and passes the bakery’s separate order and handoff checks. The software example demonstrates identity and signed information, not an automated package handoff.
Why the third robot gets the package
The bakery has one order and three machines claiming they can carry it. A dent, a photo of a certificate, or a robot’s appearance cannot establish which claims belong to which machine. Instead, each robot authenticates in its own conversation with the bakery, and the bakery checks whether any signed statement is bound to the key authenticated in that conversation.
- Robot one authenticates but supplies no cargo statement.
- Robot two supplies a genuinely signed statement, but it names robot three’s credential rather than the key authenticated for robot two’s conversation. The signature alone is not enough to associate that statement with robot two.
- Robot three authenticates and presents a statement bound to its own key. The statement describes a dry-food compartment, a nominal payload of 12 kilograms, and a cargo volume of 42 liters.
The story also says that the bakery’s separate assignment, sensor, and handoff checks pass for robot three. That is why the hatch opens for the quiet robot. The package decision is a fictional story outcome, not a decision made by the protocol fixture. Source: ryo-stst’s article on DEV Community, published September 29, 2026.
What the local Robot Identity Protocol example demonstrates
The article follows its short story with a small Robot Identity Protocol (RIP) experiment. The described SDK is version 0.2.0-alpha.2. It uses EDHOC for the current exchange, real key exchange and signatures, synthetic issuers, and three separate sessions in one Node.js process. Trust is provisioned locally: a receiver does not accept a key merely because an unfamiliar peer advertises it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
All three endpoints authenticate in the example; only robot three supplies a cargo statement whose subject matches its authenticated key. The bakery sample’s dry-food, 12-kilogram, and 42-liter values are fictional fixture data—not measured payload capacity, a current load reading, or a recommended specification.
RIP’s demonstrated role is endpoint authentication and optional authenticated information. A domain can define its own statement schema and validator. Authorization, safety decisions, order assignment, physical handoff, and robot control remain outside the example.

Reproducing the author’s example
The article gives these instructions for running the example from a local checkout of the alpha release. They are the author’s instructions and have not been independently checked against the repository’s current state.
- Use Node.js 22 or later and obtain a local checkout of the alpha release.
- From the checkout, run
npm ci. - Run
npm run example:bakery.
What authentication and a signature do—and do not—prove
A valid signature establishes that the relevant issuer signed an assertion. It does not establish that the assertion is sensible, physically true, or still accurate. The article notes that generic signature verification accepts a negative payload capacity; an application-level validator must reject values that violate its domain rules.

- Key match is not physical binding. Matching a statement’s subject to an authenticated key associates the statement with that endpoint identity. The fixture has no mechanism to prove which physical robot holds the key.
- Nominal capacity is not current availability. A stated payload capacity does not reveal how much room or weight remains today. An unexpired certificate is not a fresh cargo measurement.
- Authentication is not authorization. Successfully identifying a peer does not decide whether it should receive this order.
- Authentication is not a safety check. It does not establish that a robot can safely carry or deliver the package.
Privacy and confidentiality trade-offs
The article says RIP exposes the authenticated key identifier to the counterpart. Reusing a key can therefore make separate visits linkable. The SDK does not implement credential lifecycle management or cryptographic selective disclosure.
Optional statements are signed, not encrypted. A signature can protect integrity and identify the signer, but it does not hide statement contents from parties able to read the exchange. Confidential transfer requires a protected application channel.

What is outside the bakery fixture
The local example contains no radio, camera, door, order backend, physical robot, or physical-binding mechanism. It does not demonstrate a package-delivery or robot-safety system. The article also mentions a separate cross-domain experiment; that is distinct from the bakery fixture, and its wrapper exchange is described as local-test-only, without encrypted or authenticated application transport.
The author describes RIP as experimental alpha software, without independent interoperability or security certification. The article does not establish that it is suitable for production or safety-critical deployment, or that it replaces established V2X credential systems.

How to evaluate a robot identity claim
The bakery scenario highlights several separate checks that are easy to conflate. A sound design needs to decide each one in the context of its application:
- Issuer trust: Which issuers are trusted for this particular kind of statement?
- Peer-to-statement binding: Does the statement’s subject match the key authenticated in this session?
- Domain validation: Are the values plausible and valid under the application’s rules?
- Freshness: Is the information recent enough for the decision being made?
- Physical binding: Is there evidence connecting the endpoint key to the physical machine present?
- Privacy: Will identifiers or repeated key use make encounters linkable, and should the statement be hidden from observers?
- Authorization and safety: What independent checks permit the task and govern physical action?
The central distinction is practical: identity protocols can help a receiver decide which authenticated endpoint made a signed claim. The application still has to decide whether to trust the issuer, accept the claim’s contents, authorize the task, and act safely.
