Show catalog retrieval and answer generation as separate stages: report a search only while the application is actually retrieving catalog data, stream answer text as it arrives, and mark the response complete only when the response reaches its terminal completion event. This lets users see what the chatbot is doing without implying that partial text is a finished answer or that a search happened when it did not.
What progress streaming shows
Without streaming, an interface may wait for a complete response before displaying anything. Streaming lets an application begin processing or displaying the beginning of model output while generation continues. OpenAI describes this behavior in its Responses API streaming guide.
In the Responses API, streaming uses server-sent events (SSE) over HTTP. The stream contains typed events, not just a sequence of text fragments. That distinction matters for catalog-backed chat: retrieval activity, generated answer text, and final completion are different events and should not be presented as though they mean the same thing.
How do I show progress while a chatbot searches the catalog?
Use a status that reflects an operation the backend actually began, and update it when the corresponding retrieval events arrive. The Responses API reference documents file-search events including response.file_search_call.in_progress, response.file_search_call.searching, and response.file_search_call.completed. These can support statuses such as “Starting catalog search,” “Searching the catalog,” and “Catalog search complete,” provided the application is using that operation and receives those events.

Do not show “Searching the catalog,” “Checking sources,” or “Results found” merely to fill the wait. Those messages make factual claims about backend work. If the application does not perform catalog retrieval, or cannot tell that retrieval began, use a neutral acknowledgement instead, such as “Working on your question.” Acknowledgements should not imply a search or successful result.
Why does my chat answer appear one piece at a time?
When text-delta events arrive, the client can append each fragment to the answer as it is generated rather than waiting for the entire response. OpenAI’s documentation describes this as starting to print or process the beginning of model output while generation continues. The displayed text is therefore a partial answer until the response completes.

Keep that partial state visually distinct from a finished response. For example, show incoming text in the message area while generation is active, then remove the active indicator or label the message complete only after the terminal completion event. The first text fragment is not evidence that the answer is finished.
A reliable event-to-interface sequence
- On submission: acknowledge the request if the application can do so immediately and truthfully.
- During retrieval: show a concise catalog-search status only after the retrieval operation starts; update or clear it based on the actual retrieval events received.
- During generation: append text deltas in order and make clear that the response is still arriving.
- On completion: mark the answer complete when the response reaches its completion event.
- On failure or incomplete termination: stop the active indicator, tell the user the response did not finish, and offer an appropriate recovery action, such as retrying or submitting the question again.
This sequence is an implementation pattern based on the event distinctions documented by OpenAI; it is not a prescribed interface design or a claim of measured usability improvement.

Handle errors and incomplete responses
A stream can end in an error or an incomplete state, so a spinner should not run indefinitely or leave partial text looking final. The Responses documentation includes an error event and reference information about incomplete responses. Handle terminal outcomes explicitly: stop the loading state, preserve or discard partial text according to the product’s behavior, explain that the answer did not finish, and give the user a next step.
Also distinguish a completed retrieval from a completed answer. A search completing means that retrieval operation ended; it does not mean the model has finished composing a response. Likewise, answer text arriving does not prove retrieval succeeded. The client should map each state to the event that supports it.

Choosing a streaming transport
OpenAI’s guide describes SSE for HTTP streaming and also points to WebSocket mode for persistent interaction with incremental inputs. It does not publish a use-case benchmark establishing that one is faster or better for catalog-backed chat. Choose based on the shape of the interaction and your deployment constraints:
- Request then receive events: SSE over HTTP is a natural fit when the client sends a request and consumes a stream of response events.
- Ongoing bidirectional interaction: consider WebSocket mode when the application needs persistent interaction with incremental inputs.
- Infrastructure support: check that your hosting, proxies, and client environment support the transport and keep streams open as required.
- Recovery behavior: decide how the client handles dropped connections, reconnection, and whether the application can resume or must start a new request.
- Event handling: ensure the client parses the event protocol and handles text, retrieval, completion, and error states rather than treating every event as displayable text.
OpenAI recommends Responses for new streaming implementations, describing it as designed with streaming in mind and using semantic, type-safe events. That is OpenAI’s recommendation, not a comparative performance result.

What streaming does—and does not—promise
Streaming makes intermediate activity available to the interface before the full generated answer is ready. It does not, by itself, improve catalog coverage, retrieval quality, ranking, or factual accuracy, and the cited API and SDK documentation does not quantify a speed-up. OpenAI’s Agents SDK documentation notes that streamed events can be useful for end-user progress updates and partial responses; it does not prescribe a particular interface or report a usability test.
