For a new production React app, start with a full-stack React framework unless your project has a specific reason to assemble the pieces yourself. Then design routes, data loading, code delivery, and rendering together: that is what keeps the app responsive as its features and team grow. Scalability is not a rendering mode or a framework checkbox; it is a set of decisions that fit your product, infrastructure, and users.
1. Set the app’s constraints before choosing its architecture
Start by describing the application in terms of routes and user needs, not preferred libraries. The right setup depends on where its data lives, what must be visible on the first load, how interactive each route is, and what your team can operate.
- Identify routes that need search indexing or useful content on the initial response, as well as routes that can start as browser-rendered interfaces.
- Map the data each route needs, where requests can run, and whether the app needs caching, mutations, or real-time updates.
- Decide whether your team can run and maintain a server, or whether static deployment is a better fit.
- Account for the skills and conventions of the people who will maintain the code. A technically possible architecture can still be a poor choice if the team cannot operate it reliably.
React’s guidance says supported frameworks can use client rendering, single-page app behavior, and static generation, with server rendering available per route where supported. That means you do not have to make every route use the same rendering strategy. React’s guide to creating an app describes the framework options and deployment flexibility.
2. Choose a foundation that fits a whole application
React recommends starting a new app or website with a framework. Its current guide names Next.js App Router and React Router v7. React Router can also be used with Vite as a full-stack framework. These approaches provide or coordinate concerns such as routes, data loading, code splitting, rendering, and deployment that a build tool alone does not automatically supply. | Foundation | What it gives you | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Full-stack React framework | Integrated conventions for routing, data loading, code splitting, and supported rendering approaches. | A new production app where you want a coordinated application architecture rather than choosing and wiring each part independently. |
| Build tool with a from-scratch setup | A build and development foundation; you choose and integrate routing, data loading, rendering, and related conventions. | Project constraints, an established architecture, or a learning goal justify owning those choices. React lists Vite, Parcel, and Rsbuild as possible build-tool foundations. |
React announced that Create React App was sunset on February 14, 2025, and no longer recommends it for new apps. Its announcement explains that most production apps need routing, data fetching, and code splitting, and points developers toward frameworks while acknowledging valid from-scratch cases. React’s Create React App announcement
If you do build from scratch, treat the build tool as one piece, not the architecture. Explicitly choose how routes are defined, how route data starts loading, how errors and pending states work, and how code is split and deployed. React’s from-scratch guide discusses these responsibilities and their trade-offs.
3. Make routes and data loading one design problem
A route is more than a URL-to-component mapping: it is also a boundary for the data, pending UI, errors, and code needed to show a page. Model nested routes and parameters around the application’s real information structure, then decide how the data for each route will be requested.

Start requests before the page needs to wait for them
If a page renders a component and that component only then requests its data, the user can face a sequence of waits: first the UI begins loading, then the request starts, and then the content can appear. Route loaders, prefetching, or server-side fetching can start work earlier, depending on the framework and data source. React’s architecture guide warns about network waterfalls and describes routing and data fetching as concerns that should work together.

Prefetching can help when likely navigation is predictable, but it should serve actual user flows rather than fetching every possible destination indiscriminately.
Choose a client data library for a reason
When browser-side fetching and cache management are appropriate, match the library to the backend and application needs. React’s guide lists TanStack Query, SWR, RTK Query, Apollo, and Relay as options. Their presence on that list is not a reason to add one by default: first decide whether route loaders or server fetching already address the problem, then select a client library if its cache, mutation, or data-model features are useful.

4. Deliver only the code each route needs
Sending the entire application’s JavaScript on the first visit can make the initial experience heavier than it needs to be. Route-level code splitting lets the app load a route’s code when that route is needed, while targeted lazy loading can defer less immediately important UI. React’s from-scratch guide covers code splitting alongside routing, data fetching, and performance.
Coordinate code loading with data loading. A split can reduce initial JavaScript yet still delay meaningful content if a route first waits for its component bundle and only starts its data request afterward. Look at the complete path from navigation to visible content; do not judge a split solely by whether it reduced the initial bundle.
- Use route boundaries for substantial pages or features that are not needed on the initial route.
- Keep immediately visible, shared interface code available where it improves the initial experience.
- Check that pending states remain useful when code or data takes longer to arrive.
- Inspect real route loading behavior in the deployment environment before deciding whether additional splits help.
5. Choose rendering behavior route by route
No rendering mode is universally best for scalability. Consider the initial experience a route needs, where its data can be accessed, the deployment model, and the operational complexity your team can support.

| Rendering approach | Potential fit | Trade-off to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Client rendering (CSR/SPA) | Interactive application routes where browser-side rendering and navigation suit the product. | React’s guidance notes that a client-rendered app can have slower initial loads. |
| Server-side rendering (SSR) | Routes that benefit from server-rendered output or server-side data access. | Can improve performance, but introduces server and implementation complexity. |
| Streaming SSR | Server-rendered routes where progressively delivering output is useful. | Adds implementation complexity beyond SSR. |
| Static site generation (SSG) | Routes whose content can be generated ahead of a request. | Can improve performance, with its own implementation and content-freshness considerations. |
| Server Components through a compatible framework | Interfaces that benefit from combining build-time or server-only work with interactive client UI. | Use framework-supported implementations; do not casually build custom bundler or framework infrastructure. |
These approaches can coexist in a framework that supports route-specific choices. For example, public content and an authenticated interactive area may have different initial-render and data needs. Make the choice from the route’s requirements rather than applying one mode across the application because it is fashionable.
Use Server Components through supported tooling
React states that Server Components in React 19 are stable, but the underlying APIs used by bundlers and frameworks do not follow semver and may change between React 19 minor releases. React advises framework implementers to pin versions or use the Canary release. For application teams, the practical implication is to use a compatible framework’s implementation rather than taking on the unstable integration layer themselves. React’s Server Components reference
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Keep component boundaries predictable as the app grows
Architecture is easier to extend when components and Hooks behave predictably. React’s rules say components and Hooks should be pure: for the same inputs, rendering should produce the same result. Side effects do not belong in render, and props and state should be treated as immutable snapshots rather than modified in place. React’s Rules of React

- Keep rendering focused on calculating UI from current inputs.
- Put side effects in the appropriate event handlers or Effects instead of changing the outside world during render.
- When state changes, create updated values rather than mutating existing props or state.
- Use React Strict Mode and the Hooks ESLint plugin during development to surface bugs and reinforce maintainable patterns.
These conventions help keep changes local and easier to reason about when components, routes, and contributors multiply.
7. Validate the architecture against real loading paths
React’s architecture guidance explains qualitative trade-offs; it does not establish a universal bundle-size target, traffic threshold, or hosting provider. Do not choose a rendering mode or splitting strategy based on invented cutoffs. Instead, evaluate the app where it will actually run and focus on complete user paths.
- List critical routes. Include the first route a user enters, likely next navigation, and routes with meaningful data dependencies.
- Trace each route from navigation to content. Identify when route code and data begin loading, and whether either waits unnecessarily for the other.
- Check initial and navigated experiences. Assess the first visible content, pending states, error behavior, and the amount of code needed for the route.
- Test in the intended deployment setup. Server rendering, static output, and browser-only rendering have different runtime requirements; confirm that the chosen framework mode fits the environment your team will operate.
- Revise the boundary that causes the delay. Adjust route loading, data initiation, rendering mode, or code splits based on the observed path rather than optimizing an isolated number.
Repeat this evaluation as major routes or data flows change. Scaling the codebase is as much about preserving understandable boundaries as reducing the work required for an individual page.
