CSS :has() matches an element when a relative selector inside its parentheses matches in relation to that element. The element matched by the full selector stays the subject, so section:has(.featured) selects the section containing a featured descendant, while h2:has(+ p) selects a heading immediately followed by a paragraph. This relational pseudo-class can respond to descendants, children, siblings, and some states without adding a modifier class solely for styling.

How the CSS :has() selector works

The CSS Selectors Level 4 specification defines :has() as a relational pseudo-class that takes a relative selector list. Each selector is evaluated relative to the element matched by the surrounding selector. If at least one of those relationships matches, the surrounding selector matches.

That distinction makes “parent selector” a useful shorthand, but not a complete definition. The outside selector determines the subject; the relationship inside :has() may point to a descendant, child, or sibling. The selected element does not have to be the parent of the element or sibling matched inside the function.

How to write :has() with descendants, children, and siblings

The combinator inside the parentheses determines the relationship being tested.

For example, these rules style the outer element named before :has(), not the item inside its parentheses:

section:has(.featured) {
  border: 2px solid blue;

article:has(> img) {

}

h2:has(+ p) {

Use the narrowest relationship that matches the markup and behavior you intend. A descendant test can match an item several levels down; > restricts the match to a direct child, and + restricts it to the next sibling.

Practical uses for :has()

Change a figure when it has a caption

A figure can receive a different presentation when it contains a caption: figure:has(figcaption). This ties styling to the structure already present in the HTML instead of requiring a separate class just to indicate the caption. WebKit demonstrates this kind of content-aware styling in its :has() tutorial.

Style links that contain images

a:has(> img) matches an anchor with an image as a direct child. This can be useful when the link’s presentation should depend on its contents. If the image may be wrapped in another element, use a descendant relationship instead, such as a:has(img).

Adjust layout based on card content

A card selector can test for an image and change its layout when one is present. WebKit’s tutorial shows how this can adapt Grid treatment to a card’s contents. This is useful when the DOM already provides the signal the design needs; it is not a reason to remove classes that convey meaningful component state or are needed by other code.

Match sibling relationships

h2:has(+ p) targets a heading based on its next sibling. This is useful when adjacent content affects spacing or another presentation choice. The CSSWG specification also illustrates sibling-based matching, including adjacent dt elements.

Use it for form or interaction states when appropriate

The WebKit tutorial explores form states and a dark-mode toggle as possible uses. These examples show that :has() can test relationships involving stateful selectors, but they are not a blanket guarantee that every dynamic pseudo-class behaves identically across browser engines. Check the specific selector and target environments for an interactive feature.

Prefer a built-in pseudo-class when it already describes the behavior

If the goal is to style a section when something inside it has focus, :focus-within already expresses that behavior. web.dev notes its similarity to a pattern such as section:has(*:focus-visible). Prefer the simpler built-in pseudo-class when it meets the requirement.

Limits and selector-writing safeguards

  • No nesting: The CSSWG specification says, “The :has() pseudo-class cannot be nested; :has() is not valid within :has().” Do not put one :has() inside another.
  • Pseudo-elements are generally excluded: Pseudo-elements cannot be used as arguments to :has() unless another specification explicitly permits a particular one. The CSSWG explains that many pseudo-elements depend on ancestor styling, so querying them could create cycles.
  • Keep the tested relationship reasonably specific: MDN’s :has() reference recommends constraining inner selectors, for example with specific classes or direct-child combinators, to limit expensive ancestor traversals. This is practical guidance, not a claim that every use of :has() is slow. Test the actual selector against the page and target browsers.
  • Verify dynamic state cases: WebKit’s 2022 tutorial described some browser differences involving pseudo-classes inside :has(), including dynamic media and certain form-state invalidation cases. Those are dated implementation notes, not a current compatibility table; verify any browser-specific state selector before relying on it.

Check support and provide a fallback

Support depends on the browsers and versions your site targets. MDN’s living documentation provides a current compatibility reference; avoid relying on historical version figures when deciding whether a particular audience is covered. You can use a CSS feature query to apply enhancements only when the browser recognizes a selector.

The MDN @supports reference documents selector feature queries. Put essential layout, content, and usability in the baseline styles, then add the relational enhancement conditionally when a fallback is needed:

/* Baseline styling remains useful without :has(). */
.card {
  display: block;
}

@supports selector(:has(a)) {
  .card:has(> img) {
    display: grid;
  }
}

@supports not selector(:has(a)) {
  /* Optional fallback for browsers without selector support. */
}

The example’s @supports test checks whether the browser accepts a selector containing :has(); it does not prove that every state or edge case you might use behaves as required. Test the actual feature and keep the unsupported-browser experience complete. MDN also cautions that unsupported selectors can cause a selector block to fail unless used in a forgiving selector list, such as one inside :is() or :where(); feature queries are a straightforward way to isolate enhancements.

For a direct comparison of relationships, specificity, simpler alternatives, and fallback needs, use the actual DOM and intended behavior: a descendant selector is broader than a direct-child selector, a sibling combinator tests adjacency, and a built-in pseudo-class may express a state more simply. No one pattern is best for every use.
