To publish a plugin on WordPress.org, prepare a complete, installable plugin ZIP and a valid readme.txt, submit the ZIP for review, then use the Subversion (SVN) repository you receive after approval to publish the code and readme. Approval is not the public launch: the plugin appears in the directory after you commit its files to SVN.
What to prepare before submitting
WordPress.org requires a working plugin ready for review, not an empty submission intended to reserve a name. The ZIP should be suitable for manual installation through WordPress’s plugin installer. Register or sign in to a WordPress.org account with an email address you monitor; the official handbook recommends an official company address for company submissions. Check the plugin and its name
Test the plugin in the WordPress environments it is intended to support, and choose a distinctive name that does not infringe another product’s brand. Treat the proposed name and slug as durable decisions: the slug determines the directory permalink, plugin folder, SVN repository address, and text domain. The Plugin Developer FAQ says an approved name cannot be renamed. Review the Plugin Developer FAQ before submitting.
Review licensing, code, and services
Hosted plugins must be compatible with GPLv2 or later. You are responsible for the licensing of bundled libraries, images, fonts, and other included material, as well as the terms of any third-party service the plugin uses. The guidelines also address readable code, user privacy and consent, public-facing external links, stable releases, and version increments. - Inventory all bundled code and assets, and confirm that their licenses permit distribution.
- Check third-party API and service terms, and make data collection and external behavior transparent.
- Do not submit trialware or rely on obfuscated code; check the guidelines for restrictions on tracking and executable code delivered by third parties.
- Confirm that public-facing external links meet the directory’s permission requirements.
- Prepare a stable version and increment its version number for releases.
Write and validate the plugin listing
Place a correctly formatted readme.txt at the plugin’s root. The directory reads it to populate the public listing, including the description and other plugin information. Explain what the plugin does, how to install and configure it, and what support users can expect. The main plugin file also needs accurate metadata, including the plugin name and version.
Use the official Plugin Readmes guide to follow the format, generate a readme, and validate it before submission. A readme that is incomplete or inconsistent with the plugin makes the listing less useful and can complicate review.

Submit the complete ZIP for review
- Sign in to your WordPress.org account and open the plugin submission process described in the official handbook.
- Upload the complete, ready-to-review plugin ZIP, including its root-level
readme.txt. - Monitor the email address on your account for review questions. If reviewers identify problems, address them and follow the instructions they send.
The handbook page, last updated July 5, 2022, says a review may take up to 14 business days. That is its published guidance, not a guaranteed service level or a live estimate of the current queue; check the submission status and communications associated with your plugin for current information.
Publish the approved plugin through SVN
After approval, WordPress.org grants access to a Subversion repository for the plugin. Approval alone does not put the plugin on the public directory page. As the handbook explains, “After you upload your plugin (and a readme file) in that repository via SVN, it will appear on the plugin directory.” Follow the official Using Subversion guide to check out the repository and commit the approved plugin files and readme.

Use the standard repository layout
The repository is a release repository, not a place for ongoing development commits. Its standard top-level directories are:
trunk— the current release code and readme.tags— versioned copies of releases.assets— directory images such as icons, banners, and screenshots.
Commit individual files, not a ZIP. For a release, put the release-ready code in trunk and create a versioned copy under tags. Ensure the readme in trunk reflects the new stable tag. SVN commits regenerate distribution ZIPs and can change information shown in the directory, so commit only finished, release-ready changes. Add listing images in the correct location
Put directory screenshots, icons, and banners in the repository’s top-level assets directory—not in trunk/assets. Screenshot captions correspond to the screenshot entries in the readme. The Plugin Assets guide gives the required naming and size details, including lowercase screenshot filenames and a 10 MB maximum per screenshot. Image changes may be cached, so they might not show on the listing immediately.
Maintain the listing after launch
Keep the plugin’s contact information accurate and monitor WordPress.org communications. The directory provides plugin statistics, reviews, user feedback, and a support forum; respond to users in line with the support expectations stated in your readme. For each update, increment the version, update the release-ready code and readme, and use SVN tags to preserve the versioned release.
WordPress.org’s official automated security review documentation also describes a cooldown period before distribution through the update API for plugin releases beginning in June 2026. The overview available here does not establish the duration, exact mechanics, affected releases, or exceptions, so check the full current documentation and your submission status before planning an update’s availability.
