Relativity allows time travelers to age less than people who stay behind, so they can reach the others’ future. Black holes do not provide a proven route through time: an infaller crosses the event horizon in finite time on their own clock, and backward time travel remains speculative.
What “time travel” means in relativity
Time dilation is a difference in how much time elapses along different paths through spacetime. If two clocks follow different paths and later meet again, they can show different elapsed times. The difference is not a trick in how a clock looks: each clock records the time experienced along its own path.
Motion and gravity affect clock comparisons
In special relativity, a traveler moving at very high speed can experience less time than someone who remains behind. Gravity also affects elapsed time: clocks in different gravitational conditions do not accumulate time at exactly the same rate. NASA describes small gravitational timing differences as measurable on Earth and much stronger differences near black holes.
This makes “travel to the future” a limited but meaningful description. After a journey, a traveler could have aged less than people who stayed elsewhere, and therefore arrive at a time later than the one they experienced. It does not let the traveler choose a date at will or return to an earlier one.

What an infaller and a distant observer describe
A black hole’s event horizon is the boundary beyond which light cannot escape to distant observers. Descriptions of an object approaching that boundary depend on whose clock and measurements are being discussed; there is no single universal clock that defines a distant “now” for everyone.

The popular image of someone “frozen” at the horizon refers to a particular distant description, not to the person locally feeling time stop. A coordinate becoming infinite is a feature of that coordinate description; it is not the infaller’s own clock reading.

Nor does the infaller simply watch the entire remote universe race through its future. NASA’s black-hole explanation cautions that light from arbitrarily distant future events cannot reach the falling observer in the way that simplified accounts sometimes suggest.
Can a black hole take you into the past?
No demonstrated method allows a person to travel backward in time. Differential aging through motion or gravity points toward the future relative to people who experienced more elapsed time; it does not reverse the traveler’s path through time.

Some mathematical solutions in general relativity have features associated with wormholes or unusual paths through spacetime. That mathematical possibility is not evidence of an observed, traversable object or a working time machine. NASA’s discussion of wormhole-like features in idealized charged or rotating black-hole solutions is about those idealized solutions, not an established property of known astrophysical black holes.
Are black holes wormholes or portals?
No. NASA distinguishes black holes from wormholes: black holes do not provide shortcuts to other points in space or portals to other universes. NASA Goddard reports no evidence for wormholes in the observed universe. Its discussion treats them as theoretical possibilities and says a hypothetical tunnel would not remain open long enough on its own for a traveler.

A black hole also does not “suck” objects in from arbitrarily far away. At a sufficient distance, its gravitational effect is like that of any other object with the same mass. The event horizon matters for what can escape after crossing it; it does not make a black hole a universal vacuum cleaner.

Black holes are supported by astronomical observations, not by claims that they are portals. NASA reports that LIGO first detected gravitational waves in 2015 from the merger known as GW150914; NASA estimates that the two black holes in that event spiraled together and merged about 1.3 billion years ago.

NASA’s Black Holes overview identifies Gaia BH1, about 1,500 light-years away, as the nearest known black hole cited on that page. “Nearest known” is a changing designation as astronomers make new discoveries; it is not a claim that no closer black hole could be found.
What a black-hole time-travel scenario can—and cannot—show
A journey near a black hole can illustrate how gravity changes comparisons between clocks. It is a physics illustration, not an established travel plan: the NASA explanations cited here do not establish a feasible human journey near a black hole and back. The useful distinction is between a traveler’s finite local elapsed time, a distant observer’s signals and coordinates, and speculative ideas such as traversable wormholes. Only the first two are part of the established account described above.
