Yes. Optional chaining can hide a missing-value bug when code uses it on data that the application requires: instead of throwing at that access, ?. returns undefined. That behavior is not a Next.js defect. It is useful when absence is expected, but risky when it silently turns a broken assumption into an ordinary-looking value.
What optional chaining does—and what it does not
Next.js supports optional chaining, an ECMAScript 2020 feature. At a marked property access or call, JavaScript checks whether the value to the left is null or undefined. If so, it returns undefined and short-circuits the rest of that continuous chain. See MDN’s optional chaining reference.
For example, response.user?.profile?.displayName evaluates to undefined if user or profile is nullish. The syntax does not establish whether either field is supposed to be absent. That is a decision made by the application’s data contract.
When a quiet undefined masks the real problem
If a screen requires a user’s profile, a missing profile is not merely a value to skip; it may mean an API response is incomplete or the screen’s assumptions are wrong. Chaining through the field can suppress the immediate exception that would otherwise draw attention to the missing data. The resulting undefined may then flow into rendering or other logic, making the failure harder to locate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check required data where it enters the part of the application that depends on it, and return a clear validation result or error when it is absent. If absence is valid, make the fallback explicit and appropriate to the interface. For example, a genuinely optional callback can be invoked as onClose?.(): not providing the callback is part of its contract.
Why optional chaining does not make every later use safe
The short-circuit applies only within a continuous optional chain. Grouping can end that chain, and later operations can still fail if they receive undefined. For example, both expressions below throw:

const obj = undefined;
(obj?.foo).bar; // throws: grouping ended the chain
(obj?.foo)(); // throws: undefined is not callable
Dereferencing, calling, destructuring, iterating over, or using an undefined result in an operation that requires a value can also fail. ESLint’s no-unsafe-optional-chaining rule flags several such runtime-dangerous contexts. It does not determine whether a field is required by your product.
How to catch missing-data bugs in a Next.js project
1. Decide whether each value is optional
At each ?., ask whether the value can legitimately be absent at that point. If it is required, identify the boundary where that requirement is checked and what clear error or validation result should follow when the check fails. Do not use a fallback merely to silence an error if it would conceal invalid data.

2. Check the result of the chain
Trace the value after the optional access. Make sure code handles undefined before calling it, dereferencing it, destructuring it, iterating over it, or passing it to logic that requires a concrete value.
3. Use TypeScript checks and lint for their distinct jobs
TypeScript’s strictNullChecks treats null and undefined as distinct types, helping catch some unsafe uses during type checking. See TypeScript’s strictNullChecks documentation. A type assertion is not runtime validation: it does not prove that an API response actually contains a required field.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Linting complements type checking rather than replacing it. ESLint’s unsafe-optional-chaining rule catches certain hazardous expression patterns, while type checks catch some nullability mismatches. Neither decides whether missing data is allowed by the application’s contract, and neither substitutes for validating untrusted runtime data.
4. Verify where checks run
Do not assume that next build runs lint. The current Next.js installation documentation says that Next.js 16 removed next lint and that linting no longer runs automatically during next build. Configure the project’s lint command in its scripts or CI so it runs where the team expects.

TypeScript checking is a separate concern. Next.js documents the typescript.ignoreBuildErrors option for allowing production builds despite TypeScript errors; it should not be treated as a way to fix those errors or as a replacement for checking types elsewhere. See Next.js TypeScript configuration.
Is optional chaining the problem?
No. The operator is doing what it is designed to do. The risk comes from using it where absence violates an invariant, then failing to validate or handle the resulting undefined. The same reasoning applies to JavaScript applications generally, not just Next.js. There is no measured evidence here establishing how often this pattern hides bugs in Next.js apps; the important distinction is whether absence is valid for the specific value.
