For a tenant-scoped operation, derive the tenant from authenticated, server-verified identity and confirm that the principal or service is currently authorized for it. A tenant ID supplied in a JSON body, header, or query string is only a selector—not proof of permission.

Why a request-supplied tenant ID is not enough

A request such as {"tenant_id":"acme"} is controlled by the caller. If the server uses that value to scope a database query without checking the caller’s authority, a user may be able to select another tenant’s data.

OWASP’s Multi-Tenant Application Security Cheat Sheet treats client-supplied tenant identifiers as selectors that must be checked against the authenticated principal’s authorization. The same rule applies when the selector arrives in a header or query parameter.

Authentication identifies the caller; authorization decides what they may do

Authentication establishes who or what is making a request. Authorization determines whether that principal may perform the requested action on the specific function or resource. OWASP’s Authorization Cheat Sheet recommends checking authorization on every request, including for the object being accessed.

A verified token claim can help select a tenant only when the issuer’s guarantees make that claim suitable for the decision. Otherwise, check current membership or an explicitly scoped service authorization. A valid identity alone does not establish permission for every tenant or operation.

Establish trusted tenant context in the request path

  1. Authenticate first. Use the authentication layer to validate the caller and provide verified claims or a principal identity.
  2. Select the tenant from trusted information. Derive it from an appropriate verified claim or resolve it through the principal’s current membership or service scope.
  3. Check the requested action and resource. Confirm that the principal may perform this operation for the selected tenant and that the resource belongs to, or is accessible within, that tenant.
  4. Set request-local trusted context. Make the authorized tenant available to tenant-scoped handlers and data access rather than repeatedly trusting raw input.
  5. Validate any client selector. If the request includes a tenant ID, compare it with the authorized selection and reject a mismatch according to the application’s API contract.

OWASP’s multi-tenant guidance shows missing context and absent membership as reasons to deny access. The precise response code and error format depend on the API’s contract; the security requirement is that an unverified or unauthorized tenant selection must not proceed.

Enforce tenant ownership at every resource boundary

Tenant context must constrain access to tenant-owned records, not just establish a tenant once at login or at the start of a session. Where ownership is tenant-specific, include the tenant in the lookup or authorization policy. A random or opaque resource ID can make guessing harder, but it does not replace authorization.

Apply the same rule across alternate paths to the data—such as background jobs, administrative endpoints, and internal services. An ORM filter or a convention in one handler is not enough if another access path can bypass it.

Preserve or re-establish context across system boundaries

Service-to-service requests

Do not accept a client-supplied copy of an internal trusted header as authoritative. A receiving service should validate the context’s issuer, integrity, audience, expiry, and applicability to the actual request. OWASP’s Authorization Patterns Cheat Sheet emphasizes that a signature alone does not authorize a different tenant, resource, or action. The service must also establish that the caller is permitted to make the request.

Tenant-sensitive caches

Derive the tenant from trusted authenticated context and include the tenant, along with any other authorization-relevant dimensions, in the cache key when data varies by tenant. OWASP’s Web Cache Security Cheat Sheet addresses tenant-aware cache identity. Authorize before returning protected cached data: separate keys reduce accidental cross-tenant reuse but do not grant access.

Queued and delayed work

Carry tenant context from an authenticated producer through a trusted broker route, authenticated metadata, or an integrity-protected payload. At consumption, authenticate the producer or broker path, re-establish trusted context, and authorize both the operation and its target resource. If execution is delayed, recheck membership or permission when the original authorization decision may have become stale.

Use database isolation as defense in depth

Tenant-aware queries and database row-level security (RLS) can add enforcement beneath application handlers. They do not remove the need for application authorization; they provide another boundary if a query path is implemented incorrectly.

For PostgreSQL RLS using a session setting, OWASP’s multi-tenant guidance recommends transaction-local tenant context for shared-table request paths. A pooled connection can otherwise retain session state and expose one request’s tenant context to another. Ensure ordinary request roles cannot bypass RLS, and verify isolation using the same role and connection path used in production.

Shared-table RLS, schema separation, and separate infrastructure are architecture choices, not interchangeable guarantees. Assess them against the threat model, enforcement coverage, boundary propagation, and operational commitments; none makes an unverified request tenant ID safe.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a body, header, or query tenant ID as authorization without checking it against the authenticated principal or service scope.
  • Assuming that a signed tenant value, opaque resource ID, internal network, shared queue, or ORM filter is an authorization boundary on its own.
  • Checking membership once but not enforcing tenant ownership for each protected operation and resource.
  • Forwarding tenant context to another service without validating who issued it, who it is for, whether it is still valid, and whether it applies to the requested action.
  • Separating cache keys by tenant but returning protected cached data before authorization.
  • Setting pooled database session context in a way that can leak across transactions, or relying on RLS without verifying the production role and connection path.
