For editable text that should appear on several lines, use a <textarea>. For text that is only being displayed, use a block element and CSS wrapping rules. If a long URL or other unbroken string still overflows, add overflow-wrap: anywhere.
Choose the control based on what the text does
First decide whether a person is entering text or merely reading it. HTML provides <textarea> as the multiline plain-text editing control; a single-line <input> is not a multiline box. For read-only content, use a container such as <div> and control its wrapping with CSS.
For editable multiline text, use a textarea

}This preserves ordinary whitespace behavior and lets the browser break a long string at an otherwise unavailable break point when needed to prevent overflow. MDN explains overflow-wrap and white-space.

Understand visual wrapping versus submitted text
A textarea can visually wrap text across lines without adding those visual line breaks to its submitted value. The wrap attribute controls how the value is submitted; it is not simply a switch for whether text wraps on screen. Its default is soft. With hard, line breaks are added for submission when cols is set. The off value suppresses visual wrapping and is non-standard, so avoid relying on it for portable behavior.

Make long words and URLs fit
Normal wrapping occurs at available break opportunities, such as spaces. A URL, hash, or identifier with no suitable break can extend beyond its container. Use overflow-wrap: anywhere on the display element when that must not happen. Unlike word-break, overflow-wrap introduces an internal break only when the unbroken string cannot fit.

Choose whitespace and wrapping behavior deliberately
- Use
white-space: normalwhen ordinary whitespace should collapse and text should wrap at normal opportunities. - Choose a different
white-spacevalue if preserving spaces or source line breaks is important; the property governs both whitespace handling and ordinary line wrapping. - Avoid
text-wrap: nowrapwhen content must remain inside a constrained box: it disables soft wrapping and can cause overflow. The defaulttext-wrap: wrappermits wrapping at appropriate opportunities.
MDN describes text-wrap as widely available since March 2024, while noting that support can vary for some parts of the property. Check compatibility if your implementation depends on a newer value. For many layouts, white-space and overflow-wrap are the more direct tools.

Quick troubleshooting
- The text field scrolls sideways instead of showing multiple lines: replace the single-line
<input>with a<textarea>. - A long URL makes a display box too wide: apply
overflow-wrap: anywhereto the element containing the URL. - Spaces or newlines look different than expected: check the element’s
white-spacerule; it determines how whitespace is collapsed and how ordinary wrapping works. - A textarea wraps on screen, but its submitted value has no matching line breaks: visual wrapping and submission behavior are separate; inspect the textarea’s
wrapsetting and anycolsvalue. - Text keeps running beyond the box: look for
text-wrap: nowrapor another rule preventing soft wrapping.
