AI-powered cyberattacks are no longer only a thought experiment—but that does not mean every feared attack is common, fully autonomous, or independently confirmed. Tech.co’s September 18, 2026 article makes the case that AI can strengthen both attackers and defenders, and quotes security expert Brandon Dixon on how organizations should respond: map their workflows, decide what AI use is acceptable, and plan how misuse would be detected.
What “beyond theoretical” means—and what it does not
Tech.co’s headline, “We Are Officially Beyond Theoretical AI Attacks,” is the publication’s framing of a fast-changing security issue, not a measurement of how widespread AI attacks are. The article refers to alleged autonomous attacks, behavior seen during model testing, and a Hugging Face incident. Those examples are claims made in the article; the sources available here do not independently verify their specifics.
It is useful to distinguish three kinds of evidence: a demonstrated capability, behavior observed in a controlled model test, and an incident in a deployed system. Each can matter for security planning, but one does not automatically prove the others. In particular, a research report describing a possible attack method is not proof that the method is prevalent in real-world systems.
AI can help attackers and defenders
The central point in Tech.co’s article is dual use. AI can help attackers draft phishing lures or analyze stolen information. The same broad capabilities can help defenders find bugs, improve code, and identify vulnerabilities before criminals exploit them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Brandon Dixon, co-founder and CTO at Ent, described that balance to Tech.co: “The models being used to craft phishing lures are also being used to find bugs before they ship, improve code quality, and surface vulnerabilities in production systems before they’re exploited.” The practical implication is not that AI automatically makes either side more effective in every situation; it is that organizations should account for AI in the workflows where sensitive information, code, and access are handled.
AI-model backdoors are a concrete research concern
AI security research includes threats to the integrity of the model itself. The TrojAI final report describes hidden backdoors intentionally embedded in AI models and summarizes work on detection methods such as weight analysis and trigger inversion. It also says mitigation remains challenging. The arXiv record for the report says it was submitted on February 6, 2026, and revised on February 27, 2026: TrojAI final report on arXiv.

This is evidence that researchers study concrete ways models can be compromised and how such tampering might be detected. It does not establish how often backdoored models are present in deployed systems, or confirm the separate incidents discussed by Tech.co.
How organizations can turn the concern into a plan
Dixon’s recommendation, as quoted by Tech.co, is to understand how work actually gets done rather than relying on a generic security purchase or a broad promise to “use AI safely.” He advises organizations to determine “which behaviors are acceptable, which workflows deserve attention, how those workflows could be exploited, and how that exploitation would be detected.”

- Map AI-related workflows. Identify where employees or systems use AI, what information they provide, what tools or accounts those systems can access, and where their outputs go.
- Set acceptable-use boundaries. Decide which activities and data are appropriate for AI tools, and make the rules specific enough for staff to follow in daily work.
- Identify exploitable paths. For each important workflow, consider how an attacker might misuse its inputs, outputs, permissions, or human handoffs.
- Plan for detection. Define what suspicious activity would look like in that workflow and how it would be noticed and escalated. A risk that cannot be observed is harder to investigate.
- Revisit the plan as capabilities change. Dixon told Tech.co that AI capabilities change materially year to year, making it difficult to keep security and governance measures from becoming outdated.
These steps are a process for prioritizing attention, not a guarantee that an organization can prevent every attack. Dixon also cautioned against assuming that simply waiting or pausing development will settle the security question: “From my perspective, more time does not necessarily produce a better understanding of security vulnerabilities.”

The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than “AI attacks are everywhere”: AI has security-relevant uses on both sides, and organizations have reason to examine how their own workflows could be exploited and how misuse would be detected. Tech.co’s article and Dixon’s comments make that case; they do not establish the prevalence of autonomous attacks or independently confirm the specific incidents cited in the article.
