Flywheel is self-hostable software for routing coding tasks to local or hosted AI models, checking tool requests, recording runs, and checking answers against sources you choose. The project’s September 19, 2026 article describes Flywheel 1.0.1, while the PyPI page accessed October 5, 2026 lists the package as version 0.6.2; the sources do not establish that these labels refer to the same release artifact. Verify the exact release you intend to install.

What Flywheel is—and what it is not

The Flywheel project describes it as a “self-hostable AI workstation and coding harness.” It is software you run on your own machine, not a hosted workstation service in the cited materials. Its Python engine routes tasks, checks tool requests, runs verification, maintains a run ledger, and serves a local gateway. A Flutter client provides a native desktop interface, and the project’s package page describes a Windows installer that bundles the engine. The PyPI project page lists Python 3.11 or later and says the core engine has no runtime dependencies.

That architecture can make a run more inspectable and a check repeatable. It does not, by itself, make an answer true, prove that a source is authoritative, or guarantee that a tool action was safe.

Install and choose how to use it

Command line and local gateway

The project article’s example installation is:

pip install flywheel-verify
flywheel up

The Python distribution is named flywheel-verify; the installed command is flywheel. The article says flywheel up starts a local gateway and browser shell at http://127.0.0.1:8799. These are the article’s documented commands and address; check the release artifact you install for current instructions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Hosted or local models

Flywheel supports hosted provider APIs and optional local model routes. The package page specifically describes connecting to Ollama over HTTP and downloading 14B or 32B weights separately. It gives no hardware sizing guidance, so those model sizes should not be read as a promise that a particular computer or GPU is sufficient. The engine does not require a local model to install.

With a hosted provider, prompts and the context needed for a task go to the provider you select. A local route avoids that provider transfer for model inference, but requires separate model setup and suitable compute. The cited pages do not quantify privacy guarantees or prescribe hardware.

CLI gateway or desktop client

The command-line workflow and local gateway offer a direct setup path; the package page also describes a native Flutter desktop client, with a Windows installer that bundles the engine. These are different ways to operate the software, not separate editions with documented feature or price comparisons.

How the coding agent handles tool permissions

The article calls Flywheel’s coding agent relay. It can work with local or hosted models and folders. For shell commands, a capability check parses a request and can allow it, refuse it with a reason sent back to the model, or escalate it.

This is a permission check, not a complete sandbox. The executable-name map is curated by hand. According to the project, an executable the map has not seen is admitted and logged as unknown. Do not treat the check as a guarantee that every command is recognized, blocked, or harmless.

What the run ledger and sealed receipts show

For routed runs, the package page says the ledger records tool names, arguments, and outputs. Optional sealed tool-call receipts add a record of capability, outcome, argument and output hashes, and the previous receipt’s hash. Because receipts are linked, an invalid earlier receipt makes later receipts unverifiable.

That chain can help someone inspect and recheck the recorded sequence. It cannot independently establish that a recorded source was authoritative, that a command was safe, or that an output was correct. The record is evidence of what the system logged, not proof of the real-world truth of a model’s answer.

How check-output evaluates an answer

Flywheel’s checker compares answer values with a source selected to decide them. The article’s example is:

flywheel check-output --contract task.contract.json --answer answer.json --allow-commands

In that example, the contract and answer are JSON files, and --allow-commands permits the checker’s command use. The documented exit codes distinguish three outcomes:

  • Exit 0: confirmed.
  • Exit 1: disagreement.
  • Exit 3: no source could confirm the value.

The article also describes overall labels of RELEASE, RELEASE_WITH_CAVEAT, and HOLD. An unconfirmed value is not a confirmed one; the project’s package page puts the distinction plainly: “An unchecked value never reads as a confirmed one.” A receipt or successful run does not change that distinction.

The source determines the check’s reach

The checker can only compare a value with the source selected to decide it. The finance, medicine, and law packs provide field templates and arithmetic, not authoritative domain data. You must supply the source that supports the decision. If that source is outdated, incomplete, or unsuitable, a reproducible comparison can still produce a misleading conclusion.

The package page also describes Lean verification: the part settled by the kernel becomes a theorem, while external decisions remain named axioms. That separates a formally checked relation from the external premise it depends on. Formal verification can establish that a conclusion follows from stated assumptions; it does not independently validate those assumptions.

What the published performance results do—and do not—show

The PyPI page reports project-run measurements, not independent evaluations of user productivity or provider reliability. Its reported results do not support a claim that Flywheel improves coding capability:

Project-reported result What the project says it means
Continued pretraining on the workspace corpus changed general code completion by −3.05 percentage points over 164 tasks (p = 0.4049). The Flywheel project says it claims no capability uplift.
A retired arms benchmark reported verified inference at 9/10 versus single-shot at 8/10, a difference of +0.100 with a 95% confidence interval of [−0.236, +0.420]. The project says the arms were not independent; the interval includes zero, so it does not claim uplift.
The package page lists offline benchmark summaries covering six scenarios for governed-agent and agent-recovery suites, and 26 cases for source-mined checks. These are project-run measurements, not independent evidence of productivity or provider reliability.

All figures in the table are reported by the Flywheel project on its PyPI page in 2026, not by an independent evaluator. The available results describe tests of particular tasks and checks; they are not a general measure of how much faster or better a user will work.

Check the release and license before adopting it

The September 19, 2026 article labels its subject Flywheel 1.0.1 and links to a GitHub v1.0.1 release, but that release page could not be retrieved for this article. The PyPI page, accessed October 5, 2026, lists flywheel-verify version 0.6.2, uploaded September 11, 2026. The relationship between the article’s 1.0.1 label and the package version is not established in the cited sources. Confirm the distribution, version, and installation instructions for the specific artifact you plan to use rather than assuming the numbers match.

The PyPI page lists the license expression as FSL-1.1-MIT. Read the license text itself to understand the terms that apply to your use.

Who should consider Flywheel

Flywheel may suit a developer who wants to run a coding harness locally, choose between hosted and local model routes, inspect tool activity, and compare answer values against explicitly selected sources. Its checks are most useful when you can identify a dependable source and define what should be compared.

It is a poor fit if you need an independent authority to certify answers, a security boundary that guarantees unknown shell commands are blocked, or evidence that the system raises general coding performance. The cited materials establish none of those outcomes.
