Active Directory’s Ambiguous Name Resolution (ANR) lets a client search several naming-related attributes with one LDAP filter clause when it does not know which attribute contains the identifying text. The domain controller expands the ANR clause using its schema-defined ANR attribute set, then performs an ordinary LDAP search. ANR is specific to Active Directory behavior documented by Microsoft; it is not a universal LDAP feature or a typo-tolerant search engine.
What ANR does
Microsoft defines ANR as a search algorithm that permits a client to search multiple naming-related attributes through a single filter clause. In an LDAP filter, the clause takes a form such as (anr=value). This is useful when a client has a name or other identifying text but does not know whether it belongs in a particular field such as display name or surname. Microsoft’s [protocol glossary](https://download.microsoft.com/download/5/D/D/5DD33FDF-91F5-496D-9884-0A0B0EE698BB/%5BMS-ASCMD%5D.pdf) gives this definition; the detailed behavior is in the [Active Directory Technical Specification](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols/ms-adts/1a9177f4-0272-4ab8-aa22-3c3eafd39e4b).
ANR is a server-side interpretation of a filter clause, not a separate search service. The domain controller rewrites the filter by expanding the ANR clause across the applicable attributes and removing the ANR clause; it then executes a regular LDAP search. The eventual results therefore come from LDAP search processing, while ANR supplies the multi-attribute matching logic.
Which attributes ANR searches
The ANR set is schema-driven: it consists of attributes whose searchFlags include the fANR flag. It is not simply every attribute on a directory object. Microsoft’s [ANR attribute reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/adschema/attributes-anr) lists supported attributes by Windows version, and those lists are not identical across versions.

Examples in the documented lists include display name, given name, surname, legacy Exchange distinguished name, physical delivery office name, proxy addresses, relative distinguished name, and SAM account name. Later version lists also include additional SAM account and phonetic attributes. Treat these as version-contextual examples, not an invariant list for every forest. For an implementation, consult the applicable version documentation and inspect the target directory schema.
Microsoft’s [aNR attribute schema page](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols/ms-adls/beb4ee8d-de79-4801-8463-b3ee270a5527) identifies the LDAP display name as aNR and the attribute identifier as 1.2.840.113556.1.4.1208. It notes first implementation in ADAM and Windows Server 2008. These are schema and protocol details; they do not mean that every directory deployment has identical extensions or configuration.

How ANR matches text
ANR does not mean “find this text anywhere” across all object fields. The specification describes prefix matching across the attributes in the ANR set, with additional rules for particular input shapes.
- Ordinary input: The expanded search tests prefixes in the ANR attributes. Do not assume arbitrary substring matching.
- Input containing a space: The specification describes matching two parts against
givenNameandsn(surname) in either order. ThefSupFirstLastANRandfSupLastFirstANRvalues indSHeuristicscontrol which ordering clauses are added. - Leading equal sign: When the first non-space character is
=, ANR invokes the specification’s exact-string-search behavior. legacyExchangeDN: If this attribute is in the ANR set, the algorithm handles it specially and compares it exactly.
These rules make ANR convenient when the client does not know the attribute, but they also mean the result can differ from a deliberate search against one named attribute. The algorithm does not establish typo correction or fuzzy matching.

ANR or an explicit LDAP filter?
Use ANR when the client has identifying text but does not know which naming attribute contains it. Use an explicit LDAP filter when the attribute is known or the application requires tightly controlled matching. Neither option is universally faster: Microsoft’s specifications describe behavior, not comparative performance benchmarks.
| Consideration | ANR clause | Explicit attribute filter |
|---|---|---|
| Attribute coverage | Searches the schema-defined ANR set. | Targets the attribute or attributes named by the client. |
| Matching behavior | Uses ANR rules, including prefix behavior and special cases. | Uses the matching rule expressed in the filter for the chosen attribute. |
| Schema and version dependence | Depends on which attributes have fANR in the target schema; documented lists vary by Windows version. |
Depends on the selected attributes and their schema and matching behavior. |
| Client effort | Can avoid choosing one naming attribute in advance. | Requires the client to know which attribute or attributes to query. |
| Result ambiguity | May return matches from multiple naming-related attributes. | Limits the search to the specified fields, though multiple objects can still match. |
How to troubleshoot an ANR search
Start with the request and the directory that handled it rather than assuming ANR itself is faulty. The protocol sources establish the algorithm but do not set current latency benchmarks or a universal performance threshold.

- Capture the actual LDAP filter. Confirm whether the client submitted an
(anr=value)clause and record the surrounding filter. Client behavior can determine how much work the server is asked to do. - Identify the domain controller and directory context. Establish which controller handled the request and which Windows Server/schema version applies.
- Check the target ANR set. Verify the relevant attributes and their
fANRsettings rather than relying on an attribute list from a different Windows version. - Inspect the input and expected match. Check for spaces, a leading equal sign, or an expected
legacyExchangeDNmatch, since these invoke special behavior. - Review the search scope and result handling. Determine the search base, scope, filters, and how the client handles multiple or broad results.
- Separate query behavior from other causes. Compare client activity and server workload, and consider product-specific issues before attributing a delay to ANR alone.
A historical example illustrates why client context matters. Microsoft documented longer-than-expected Global Address List search times for an Exchange Server 2010 user searching from an Exchange ActiveSync device, where the device used LDAP queries for ANR. The support article identified Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 as the resolution for that particular case. It is a legacy, product-specific report—not a present-day performance estimate or general remediation.
