To bulk optimize Plex media, open the library in Plex Web App, filter or sort to the items you want, select Optimize…, choose an output profile and storage location, then start the job. Plex creates additional, pre-transcoded versions that may help compatible clients play media without a live video transcode. They do not guarantee Direct Play: the client must still support the version’s container, codecs, bitrate, resolution, audio and selected subtitles.
What Plex optimization does—and what it does not
Media Optimizer converts content ahead of playback using settings you choose and saves the result as a separate version. That can move some transcoding work off the moment you press Play. Plex describes the feature as pre-transcoding in its Media Optimizer overview.
Optimization is not a switch that makes every original or generated file Direct Play-compatible on every device. In Direct Play, Plex sends the file unchanged because the client accepts its container, bitrate, codecs and resolution. In Direct Stream, Plex repackages compatible audio and video tracks into a different container; Plex says this requires little processing and does not reduce video quality. Transcoding converts one or more streams that the client cannot use as-is. See Plex’s explanation of Direct Play and Direct Stream and its streaming overview.
How to optimize multiple movies or episodes
- Open the right library in Plex Web App. Use the library’s filters and sorting to narrow the results—for example, to a set of recently added titles. Plex documents optimization for a single item, a season or show, and a library-level result; it does not document choosing an arbitrary folder as a batch encoder input.
- Choose Optimize… Start the action from the library-level results or from the item, season or show you want to prepare. Review the selected scope before proceeding.
- Set the batch rules. Choose an item limit if you want to cap how many items the optimization applies to. You can also choose an unwatched-only rule; with that rule, a title can leave the optimized set after it has been watched.
- Select an optimization quality. Choose a documented preset or configure a custom profile for the clients you intend to use. The profiles are trade-offs between compatibility targets, output quality and storage, not Direct Play guarantees.
- Choose where Plex stores the optimized versions. Select the offered location that fits your library and storage plan, then save or start the optimization.
- Check the job queue. Follow the confirmation link to the Conversion Queue, or open Activity > Conversion in Plex Web App to monitor work.
Plex’s Creating Optimized Versions guide covers selection scope, limits, unwatched-only behavior, profiles and storage options. Interface labels can vary as Plex updates its apps, so check the current screen if a label differs.

Which optimized version should you choose?
Plex’s documented presets below come from its optimization guide, last modified February 28, 2019. Treat them as the settings described in that guide, not as current compatibility promises for every Plex client. Check the profile options shown in your server and the format support for the actual playback device.
| Profile | Documented target and video setting | Audio and subtitle behavior | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized for Mobile | Mobile; 4 Mbps and 720p | Preserves audio where possible or converts it to AAC 2.0 if required. SRT subtitles are copied as sidecars; other selected subtitle formats can be burned into the video before optimization. | A lower-bitrate, 720p version for a mobile-oriented target. Confirm that the particular app and connection can use it as intended. |
| Optimized for TV | TV; 8 Mbps and 1080p | Preserves audio or converts it to AAC/AC3 if needed. Subtitle handling follows the documented preset rules. | A higher-resolution preset for TV-oriented playback, subject to the TV app’s supported formats and network conditions. |
| Original Quality | Original resolution, with no bitrate limit | Compatible streams may be copied; incompatible streams can still be transcoded. | When you do not want the preset to impose a resolution or bitrate limit. It does not ensure the original will Direct Play. |
| Custom | Select a profile, such as a Plex app profile or Universal Mobile/Universal TV, and set a bitrate limit up to 20 Mbps in the guide. | Depends on the chosen profile and selected subtitle options. | When a documented generic target or a specific Plex app profile better matches the intended client. |
These bitrate and resolution figures are profile settings from Plex’s guide, not independent performance measurements. A matching resolution alone is not enough: container, bitrate, video and audio codecs, device capabilities, network conditions and subtitles can all affect playback. Plex’s supported-formats guide gives device-specific examples; consult the entry for your device rather than assuming one platform’s support applies to another.

Where Plex saves optimized versions
The documented storage choices are a Plex Versions folder beside the original media items, or a Plex Versions folder below a selected library path. You can add a location to the library and choose it as a common place for optimized copies. Check the location setting before starting a large batch so the extra versions go where you expect.
Optimized versions take additional storage because they are separate copies or versions alongside the original media. Their actual size depends on the source and chosen settings; Plex’s optimization guide does not establish a universal savings or output-size figure. If capacity is tight, try a small batch and inspect the resulting files before expanding the job. A NAS or other storage upgrade is only relevant if your existing space is insufficient; Plex optimization does not require purchasing one.

How to monitor or remove optimization jobs
The Conversion Queue shows queued and active optimizer work. Open it from the confirmation link after saving an optimization, or go to Activity > Conversion. Plex’s Conversion Queue guide explains how to view status, reorder jobs or remove them. Completed optimized versions are managed in the server’s Optimized Versions settings.
How to check whether playback is Direct Play
- Pick a representative optimized title. Test on each client that matters, especially where apps or playback setups differ.
- Start playback and inspect Plex playback information. Check whether Plex reports Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode.
- Note what is being processed. Audio-only conversion can leave the video untouched. If selected subtitles are incompatible, Plex may need to burn them into the picture, which can trigger a full video transcode.
- Adjust the cause, not just the resolution. Try a different profile, compatible audio or subtitle settings, or a client-supported version, then test again.
Plex apps use heuristics to choose among available versions. The choice can depend on connection type, resolution, audio setup and device capability, among other compatibility factors. Plex’s playback guide explains how these factors and subtitles affect the result. An optimized filename or preset label by itself cannot establish that a particular app will Direct Play it.

If Plex still transcodes after optimization
- Video transcodes: The client may not support the generated file’s container, codec, bitrate or resolution, or network conditions may affect the version Plex selects. Check the client’s supported formats and try a profile designed for that app.
- Audio transcodes: The audio codec or channel setup may not be supported even when the video is compatible. A video transcode is not inevitable when only audio needs conversion.
- Subtitle-triggered transcode: A selected subtitle format may require burning into the video. Try an available sidecar-compatible format or test playback with subtitles off to identify whether they are the trigger.
- Unexpected version selection: Plex may select among versions using client and connection heuristics. Inspect playback information on the actual client rather than inferring the selected version from the library listing.
If real-time transcoding remains necessary, Plex’s Transcoder settings guide, last modified September 30, 2026, says hardware acceleration can increase transcode speed and concurrent capacity, but may reduce quality or compatibility and requires Plex Pass for the server-owner account. That is a separate fallback from preparing optimized versions in advance.
