For a full-book translation, preserve the manuscript’s structure, translate manageable sections with selected context, and track every source segment through assembly and review. There is no universally established best chunk size or overlap: the right unit depends on the model, language pair, genre, and text. A long advertised context window is not proof that a model will translate a book consistently.
Why not translate the whole book in one pass?
A book is more than a long string. Chapters, paragraphs, dialogue, notes, recurring names, and references all carry information that can be lost if the text is flattened or divided carelessly. At the same time, sending an entire manuscript at once can exceed a model’s usable context or leave too little room for instructions and generated translation.
Long-context capacity should be treated as a limit to plan around, not a quality guarantee. The 2025 EMNLP SEGALE study evaluates book-length machine translation and reports that many tested open-weight LLMs did not translate effectively even at their reported maximum context lengths. Separately, a 2023 WMT study by Karpinska and Iyyer found that GPT-3.5 (text-davinci-003) translating whole literary paragraphs performed better than standard sentence-by-sentence translation in a human evaluation across 18 linguistically diverse language pairs. That result is specific to the model and study setup; it is not a current ranking of models, and the authors still report critical errors.
Together, these findings favor a middle path: preserve enough context to support meaning and voice, but process the book in units that can be tracked and reviewed.

Which translation workflow should you use?
| Approach | What each request receives | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-book prompt | The complete manuscript, if it fits, plus instructions | Offers broad context, but a large context window does not ensure effective book-length translation; input and output also compete for the available budget. |
| Sentence-by-sentence | One sentence at a time, often with little surrounding text | Easy to isolate and track, but can remove the paragraph-level context that matters for literary translation. The 2023 WMT study found paragraph-level translation stronger than standard sentence-by-sentence translation in its tested setup. |
| Structured chunks with context | A complete paragraph or section where possible, plus selected neighboring or chapter context and terminology notes | Balances local context with manageable units, but requires deliberate boundary handling and cumulative review. No universal chunk size or overlap is established. |
| Chunks with summary-based context | A section plus a maintained summary of earlier material | Can provide a compact account of prior events, but the book-scale summarization work does not establish that summary-driven context is best for translation. Summaries can omit details that matter to a later passage. |
For most book projects, structured chunks with selected context are the most defensible starting point. Use summaries as a supplement when they help orient the model, not as a replacement for the source passage or a terminology record.
How to prepare the manuscript before chunking
Preserve the document’s structure
Start with a structured source file rather than a flattened export. Retain chapter and section divisions, paragraph breaks, dialogue, notes, and other meaningful elements. Give every source unit a stable identifier, such as a chapter and paragraph number, so a translator or editor can locate it again and verify that nothing was skipped or duplicated.
Keep the source text and translated text aligned by those identifiers. This makes it possible to revise a single passage without losing its place in the assembled book. The ContextWeaver project describes a file-first approach with stable segment identifiers, resumable records, checks, and EPUB or Markdown export. It is an early-stage implementation example, not an independently validated standard.

Build a compact terminology and entity record
Before translation, record recurring character and place names, titles, invented terms, forms of address, and other choices that should remain consistent. Note the chosen translation and any relevant context—for example, whether a title is translated, retained, or treated differently in dialogue. Update the record when the manuscript or editorial decisions require a change, and provide the current version to each relevant chunk.

A glossary is not a substitute for context: it can keep a name consistent, but it cannot explain a character’s changing relationship or a deliberate shift in tone. Keep those kinds of decisions in concise chapter or section notes.
How should you choose chunk size and overlap?
Choose chunk size from the actual request budget, not from a generic token count. Instructions, terminology, contextual passages, source text, and the model’s generated translation all consume capacity. Leave room for the output as well as the input; a request that fits only because it leaves almost no space for a complete translation is not a useful working size.

Within that budget, prefer complete paragraphs or coherent sections. Split a paragraph only when necessary, and keep a clear record of where the split occurs. A chapter can be translated in one request only if the full request fits comfortably and the result can still be checked; there is no rule that every chapter should be one chunk.
Overlap can provide nearby context, but it also creates a risk of repeated output or unclear boundaries. A practitioner account on this topic reports that an early 100-token overlap—about 3% in that author’s setup—did not prevent context breaks, and that translators observed problems. This is an account of one workflow, not a controlled comparison or a general recommendation. Test boundary passages in your own material rather than assuming that overlap alone will solve the problem.

A practical boundary rule
- Keep the source segment to be translated visibly separate from context supplied only for reference.
- Use stable identifiers for source segments and preserve them in the translation record.
- If neighboring text is included in more than one request, mark exactly which segment is the translation target in each request.
- Assemble output by source identifier, not by copying overlapping request text into the final manuscript.
- Check the beginning and end of every chunk for omitted, repeated, or abruptly altered material.
What context should each chunk receive?
Give the model the smallest set of context that can clarify the current passage. A useful context packet can include nearby source text, a brief section or chapter note, relevant glossary entries, and any cross-chapter entity information needed for the passage. ContextWeaver describes this kind of packet-based design, including neighboring text, section context, glossary entries, and cross-chapter entities.

Make the roles of these elements explicit. Identify the source passage that must be translated, the text included only as context, the applicable terminology decisions, and any formatting requirements. If context contains an earlier translation, distinguish it from the current source so it is not mistaken for text to reproduce.
Keep chapter notes factual and selective: established events, relationships, chronology, and unresolved references are more useful than a broad retelling. Refresh those notes as the book progresses. A summary can compress prior events, but it may omit a detail the current passage depends on; include the relevant source context when that distinction matters.

- Inventory the source. Record the manuscript version and map its chapters, sections, paragraphs, notes, and other meaningful units.
- Assign segment identifiers. Give each unit a stable source ID and retain its order, so missing and duplicated material can be detected.
- Set a request budget. Account for instructions, context, glossary entries, source text, and generated output. Do not use the model’s maximum context specification as a target size.
- Choose natural chunk boundaries. Group complete paragraphs or coherent sections where they fit. Split only when needed and record the exact boundary.
- Prepare the context packet. Add relevant neighboring text, concise chapter or section context, and the current terminology and entity decisions.
- Translate and save each unit. Keep the output linked to its source ID and preserve the model settings and context version if the project needs to be resumed or audited.
- Assemble by source order. Use identifiers to place translated units, then check that each source unit appears once and in the correct position.
- Review the assembled book. Check both passage-level accuracy and consistency across chapters before treating the translation as complete.
For a resumable workflow, also record source-file versions, chunk boundaries, context and glossary revisions, and human edits. ContextWeaver’s description of manifests and append-only translation records illustrates one way to make changes inspectable; it does not establish a required format.

How to review quality across the whole book
Check each passage
- Compare the translation with its source for meaning, omissions, additions, and negation.
- Review dialogue, pronouns, references, and passages whose interpretation depends on nearby paragraphs.
- Check formatting and structural elements such as paragraph breaks, notes, and section order.
Check consistency and continuity cumulatively
- Search for recurring names and terms that drift from the glossary.
- Check that relationships, forms of address, chronology, and references remain coherent across chapters.
- Review voice and register for changes that are intentional in the source as well as those that may have arisen during translation.
- Verify completeness by reconciling source and translated segment IDs and checking chunk boundaries.
Long-document evaluation can help identify problems, but an automatic metric is not a substitute for editorial judgment about a literary work. SEGALE uses sentence segmentation and alignment to evaluate continuous text and reports comparisons with ground-truth alignments; it is an evaluation scheme, not proof that one metric captures literary quality. Pair automated checks with qualified human review when the quality of the complete book matters. The 2023 WMT study’s finding of critical errors is another reason not to treat a fluent passage—or a strong aggregate score—as proof that every important choice is correct.
What the book-scale studies do—and do not—show
The 2024 ICLR BooookScore paper addresses book-length summarization for documents exceeding 100K tokens in its motivating setup. It describes processing input chunks and then merging, updating, or compressing chunk-level summaries, and studies hierarchical merging and incremental updating. This is useful background for managing information across a long document, but it does not prove that translating from summaries is better than translating with source passages and selected context.
The available findings support structure, explicit context management, and evaluation at document scale. They do not establish a winning chunk size, overlap amount, model, or universal prompt format. Treat those as project-specific decisions to validate on representative passages before processing the entire manuscript.
