p-token is an optimized replacement for the existing SPL Token Program on Solana—not a new token that holders need to swap into. Solana says the change is backwards compatible, so users do not need to migrate their SPL tokens and existing wallets and applications are expected to keep working. Integrators should note one qualification: Solana flags indexing changes as required. p-token is also distinct from Token-2022, which remains a separate token program.
What does “replaced in place” mean?
The change is to the program’s implementation, not to the tokens themselves. SIMD-0266 replaces the existing SPL Token Program implementation with an optimized version. The tokens remain under the existing program identity rather than being moved to a newly created token program. Solana Foundation describes p-token as a “drop-in code replacement for the existing SPL Token Program” in its August 21, 2025 article about scaling Solana.
Solana’s Optimized Token Program announcement says the existing instruction set remains compatible and labels the upgrade as having no breaking change. In practical terms, this is not a user-facing token swap or a move to a new asset. The program implementation changes while the established token functionality remains available.
Is p-token live on mainnet?
Yes. Solana Explorer’s SIMD-0266 feature-gate record lists “SIMD-0266: Efficient Token program” as active on Mainnet Beta, activated at slot 419,472,000 in Epoch 971. Solana’s April 2026 upgrade page also describes mainnet activation as completed. Activation details can change in future network upgrades, so the Explorer record is the live reference for the current status.

Do SPL token holders need to migrate?
No user migration is described as necessary. Solana says existing token interactions, wallets, and DeFi protocols continue to work with the replacement. There is no new p-token asset into which holders must convert existing SPL tokens.
That user-facing compatibility statement is not a claim that every technical integration is untouched: Solana’s upgrade page marks indexing changes as required. It does not name specific indexer providers or give a provider-by-provider readiness schedule, so applications that depend on indexed token data should check their own integration path rather than assume a particular service is affected or already updated.

How p-token differs from Token-2022
p-token and Token-2022 are different things. p-token is an optimized implementation replacement for the original SPL Token Program. Token-2022 is a separate program, also referred to in Solana documentation as the Token Extensions Program. Its separate program identity and selection path remain in place; p-token does not mean that existing tokens were moved to Token-2022.
Solana’s token basics documentation describes common operations such as creating mints and token accounts, transferring, managing authorities, burning, closing, freezing, and thawing. Shared functionality does not make the two programs identical: program choice and account ownership still matter.

What should CLI users and developers check?
Solana’s SPL Token CLI reference keeps the original Token Program as the CLI default. Token-2022 requires explicit selection with --program-2022. This distinction is useful when diagnosing a command that targets an address: a command will fail if the selected program does not own the supplied address.
- For token holders: no token migration is required by the described upgrade.
- For wallet and application developers: Solana says the existing instruction set remains backwards compatible, but review any assumptions that rely on indexed data.
- For CLI users: select the program that owns the mint or token account; do not treat p-token as a new CLI program choice equivalent to Token-2022.
What performance improvement does Solana report?
Solana Foundation’s April 2026 announcement reports a 95–98% reduction in compute units across the token-operation comparisons displayed on its page, and says the upgrade enables 10% more total block space. These are Solana’s published figures, not independent measurements.

The page’s sample instruction comparisons report Transfer at 4,645 compute units for SPL Token versus 76 for p-token, and TransferChecked at 6,200 versus 105. Those figures describe the examples shown by Solana; they should not be read as a guarantee that every transaction will use those exact amounts.
