The Intel Xeon Platinum 8180 can run XMRig, but the available figures do not establish a controlled “Wolfs v. XMRig” contest. The 8180 is a 28-core, 56-thread server CPU; XMRig is mining software. “Wolfs” remains unclear in the exact-title reference, so it should not be treated as a verified product or software fork. The useful comparison is what XMRig’s submitted benchmark data says—and what it does not.
What “Wolfs v. XMRig” means—and what is known
The phrase is ambiguous. The exact-title result uses “Wolfs v.” in a stock-XMRig-baseline context, but the page is inaccessible and the available sources do not identify “Wolfs” as a specific miner, version, or fork. It may be a misspelling or a reference to Wolf Pass, but neither interpretation is confirmed. Do not silently substitute one for the other. If you meant a particular software release, its exact name and version are needed for a fair comparison.
The two named items are not equivalent products: Intel Xeon Platinum 8180 is hardware, while XMRig is software that can run on supported hardware. A meaningful head-to-head therefore needs two precisely identified software configurations running under the same conditions on the same CPU and platform.
Xeon Platinum 8180 specifications relevant to mining
Intel lists the Xeon Platinum 8180 as a discontinued server processor with 28 cores, 56 threads, a 2.50 GHz base frequency, up to 3.80 GHz turbo frequency, 38.5 MB of L3 cache, and a 205 W thermal design power (TDP). It uses the FCLGA3647 socket and supports six channels of DDR4-2666 memory. TDP is a processor specification, not a measurement of whole-system power at the wall. What XMRig’s 8180 benchmark entries show
XMRig’s live RandomX, 56-thread benchmark table lists 26,195.84 H/s for the Xeon Platinum 8180, based on six submitted samples. It lists 27,022.50 H/s for the 8180M, based on five samples. These are database entries, not controlled laboratory results. The table does not establish identical systems, settings, or conditions, and it does not identify a “Wolfs” variant or prove that one such variant outperforms another. XMRig RandomX Intel benchmark table.
The displayed values are useful as reference points, not guaranteed results for a particular server. Differences in memory configuration, NUMA placement, software build, operating system, and tuning can change a run. A 56-thread result also does not prove that using every hardware thread is optimal for every configuration.

Why RandomX setup and memory topology matter
XMRig’s optimization guide specifies 2,080 MB of dataset memory per NUMA node and describes cache requirements of 256 KB of L2 and 2 MB of L3 per mining thread. The processor’s six memory channels and the server’s NUMA layout are part of the configuration, not incidental details: available bandwidth, memory population, and thread placement can affect performance. XMRig RandomX Optimization Guide.
XMRig says huge pages can increase RandomX performance by up to 50% in general guidance; on Linux, 1 GB huge pages may add 1–3% beyond regular huge pages. Those figures are not measurements of an 8180 system and should not be read as guaranteed gains. The guide also discusses prefetcher tuning, but any BIOS or operating-system changes should be evaluated on the actual server.

Thread count should be tested rather than assumed. Run a consistent benchmark at relevant thread counts and NUMA or affinity settings, then compare repeat runs. A lower thread count may be preferable if it gives a better result for the system’s memory topology or operating constraints.
How to compare two XMRig configurations fairly
- Define the configurations. Record the exact CPU and server platform, BIOS, memory population and speed, operating system and kernel, XMRig version and build, algorithm mode, thread count, and any affinity or NUMA settings.
- Use the same benchmark method. XMRig’s benchmark procedure runs 1M or 10M hashes. Choose the same mode for both configurations and repeat runs on the same machine instead of comparing unrelated database entries. See XMRig benchmark documentation.
- Verify optimization status. XMRig advises checking for “huge pages 100%” for both the dataset and all threads, and for successful MSR register configuration. Its documentation warns that without these, results can be far from the best. Record any setup failures rather than treating an incomplete run as a software comparison.
- Keep algorithm modes distinct. RandomX and RandomWOW are different algorithm variants, not interchangeable labels for the same test. XMRig describes RandomWOW as using 1 MB of CPU cache per thread and as useful for Intel and first-generation Zen/Zen+ CPUs; its Monero RandomX variant uses 2 MB and is described as best for Zen2/Zen3. For RandomX v2, use XMRig 6.26.0 or later, as specified in its benchmark documentation.
- Report the spread and context. Include repeated results and the settings that produced them. Do not select one best run and present it as a universal result.
Hashrate is not a profitability or efficiency result
A benchmark hashrate alone cannot show whether mining with an 8180 is profitable or energy-efficient. The cited figures do not include controlled power-at-wall measurements, electricity costs, pool fees, or a revenue calculation. To evaluate economics, measure whole-system wall power during sustained mining and state the electricity rate, pool assumptions, and calculation period. The 205 W Intel TDP is not a substitute for that measurement.

What to check before building around an 8180
Intel marks the processor discontinued, so its specification page does not imply current retail availability. If considering a used or existing 8180 system, confirm that the specific motherboard and BIOS support it, along with the FCLGA3647 socket, memory configuration, cooling, and full-system power requirements. XMRig’s memory and NUMA considerations make the server configuration important; the available data does not establish one universally compatible memory kit or capacity.
