You can follow it in an embedded browser editor without installing anything, or run its downloadable starter locally with Node.js, npm, and the Angular CLI.
What you’ll build and learn
The tutorial guides you through a sample application that lists homes for rent and displays details for an individual home. It uses that example to introduce Angular concepts applicable to many kinds of applications. Lessons can be followed in any order, so you can focus on the topics you need.
The starting point is not limited to a blank greeting screen: the official tutorial provides a rental-listing project and a guided sequence for exploring and changing it. See Angular’s first-app tutorial.
What you need to know first
Angular expects you to be comfortable editing HTML, using JavaScript to program site content, reading CSS, and following command-line instructions. TypeScript is useful to learn as you work with Angular, but the local setup guide does not require prior TypeScript knowledge.

Choose a browser or local workflow

Angular does not quantify a speed or learning-outcome advantage for either path. Start in the browser if you want to explore first; choose local development when you want to work directly with files on your computer. See the Angular CLI overview for the browser-based option.
Run the tutorial’s downloaded starter locally

node --version. Angular requires an active LTS or maintenance LTS release; consult the official compatibility information for the current supported versions rather than relying on a fixed version number.Rank #2

If needed, install a compatible Node.js release. Install the Angular CLI globally with npm:
npm install -g @angular/cli -
Download the starter from the first-app tutorial, open a terminal in the downloaded project, and enter its

Install the project dependencies:
npm install -
Start the development server:
ng serve -
Open http://localhost:4200 in a browser. You should see the running application. As you change project files, the development server rebuilds the app so you can inspect your changes.
The local setup guide also documents pnpm, yarn, and bun as package-manager alternatives. Follow its instructions if you use one of those instead of npm; the steps above describe the tutorial’s npm-based starter workflow.

Do not confuse the starter with a new Angular workspace
The tutorial’s downloaded first-app starter and the general CLI command for creating a fresh project are separate workflows. If you want a new, generic workspace rather than the tutorial’s prepared rental app, use the setup guide’s sequence:

Create a project:
ng new my-app -
Enter its directory:
cd my-app -
Start the server and open the app:
ng serve --open
That workflow creates a new project named my-app; it is not the command for downloading or launching the tutorial’s first-app starter. The server watches files, rebuilds, and reloads as they change. See Setting up the local environment and workspace.

Make and verify your first change
The introductory lesson identifies the main files you’ll encounter in the current concise Angular project style:
index.htmlis the top-level HTML template.styles.csscontains global styles.main.tsis the application entry point.app.tsdefines the root component.
In the lesson, you change the app to display “Hello world!” and then check the result in the browser. Keep the server running, make the change specified in the lesson, and return to http://localhost:4200 to confirm that the rendered page updates. The first lesson walks through that initial edit.
Choose an editor you’re comfortable using
No particular IDE is required. Angular says, “You are free to use any tool you prefer to build apps with Angular.” Its documentation lists Visual Studio Code and WebStorm as editor options. Angular Language Service is an optional enhancement for Angular-specific language support, not a prerequisite. See the local setup guide for the documented editor choices.
