There is no single winner: Langfuse is the broadest documented production-observability and iteration loop; Phoenix centers standards-based tracing alongside evaluations and experiments; Promptfoo is strongest for repeatable testing and red teaming; and Iris is a narrower, promising MCP-focused evaluator whose current capabilities need confirmation from primary project materials. Choose by workflow, not feature count—and consider combining a tracing platform with a test harness.
This comparison reflects official product documentation for Langfuse, Phoenix, and Promptfoo, plus secondary comparison material for Iris, as of October 5, 2026. Product capabilities below are vendor-described, not independently tested. There is no independent head-to-head benchmark here for speed, accuracy, or outcomes.
At a glance: what each tool is for
| Tool | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Langfuse | Connecting production traces to prompt management, evaluation, datasets, and experiments. | Its breadth means deployment, ingestion, retention, and feature entitlements need to fit your organization. |
| Phoenix | OpenTelemetry/OpenInference-based tracing paired with evaluations and experimentation. | Confirm which operational needs require managed Arize AX rather than open-source Phoenix; the repository describes Phoenix as ELv2-licensed. |
| Promptfoo | Repeatable test cases, model/prompt comparisons, security scans, and red teaming, including MCP workflows. | It is a test harness, not a substitute for an ongoing production observability platform. |
| Iris | A potentially focused way to evaluate agent traces in MCP workflows using deterministic rules. | The positioning is supported here only by secondary comparison material; verify project status and capabilities before adopting it. |
Where Langfuse wins—and where it gives something up
Langfuse’s documented strength is the connection between runtime observation and development work. Its tracing covers LLM and non-LLM activity, including retrieval and API calls, with sessions and agent graphs, cost, and latency. Teams can bring data in through Python and JavaScript SDKs, integrations, OpenTelemetry, or gateways, then work with prompt versions, evaluations, datasets, experiments, feedback, and annotation queues. Langfuse describes itself as open-source and self-hostable.
Choose Langfuse when
- You want production traces to feed directly into prompt and evaluation iteration rather than move between separate tools.
- You need a broad view of multi-step AI work, including calls outside the model itself.
- Your team is prepared to assess its ingestion approach, deployment, retention, and the entitlements available in the version and plan you intend to use.
What to verify
Langfuse documentation labels v4 as live and is actively changing. Check the current deployment and feature documentation for your chosen version before making decisions about hosting, licensing, or feature availability. Specific claims about paid-only self-hosted features or mandatory infrastructure are not established here.

Where Phoenix wins—and where it gives something up
Phoenix, built by Arize AI, combines tracing based on OpenTelemetry and OpenInference with evaluation and experimentation tools. Its documentation describes code-based checks, LLM judges, and human labels, plus prompts, datasets, and experiments. Evaluators can be used in client SDKs or configured through the UI for dataset experiments. Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud deployment are documented options.
Choose Phoenix when
- Standards-based instrumentation is a priority and your team wants tracing alongside evaluation and prompt iteration.
- You want to run the open-source product locally or manage its deployment, subject to your own infrastructure and governance requirements.
- Your evaluation workflow should use code checks, model-based judgments, human labels, or a mix of them.
Understand the Phoenix and AX boundary
Phoenix documentation points to Arize AX for continuous online evaluation with alerts and threshold triggers. Do not assume the open-source Phoenix product and managed AX provide identical operations or support. The Phoenix GitHub repository describes its license as Elastic License 2.0 (ELv2); “open source” in product descriptions should not be read as meaning OSI-approved permissive licensing. Review the current license text against your intended use.

Where Promptfoo wins—and where it gives something up
Promptfoo describes itself as an open-source CLI and library for evaluating and red-teaming LLM applications. It is built around configured test cases, assertions, and comparisons across prompts, models, and RAG setups, as well as vulnerability scanning and automated red teaming. Its workflow is especially practical for local iteration and CI/CD, where teams want repeatable checks before a change ships.
Its MCP workflows
Promptfoo can use an MCP provider to call a local or remote MCP server for testing or red teaming. Its CLI can also expose evaluation capabilities as MCP tools for coding agents. That makes it a direct fit for teams testing MCP behavior; it does not by itself provide the same ongoing production trace and prompt-management workflow described by Langfuse or Phoenix.

Community and paid plans
Promptfoo’s official pricing page lists Community as free, with local or self-hosted operation, evaluation features, and up to 10,000 red-team probes per month. That figure is a vendor-stated plan limit, not a quality or performance result. Enterprise and On-Premise pricing is custom; listed Enterprise additions include team collaboration, continuous monitoring, a centralized security and compliance dashboard, SSO, managed cloud, and support. Plan details and limits can change, so confirm the current pricing page before purchase.
Where Iris may fit—and why the recommendation is provisional
The available secondary comparison describes Iris as an MCP server that evaluates agent traces with deterministic rules and reports precision and recall for each rule. If that description matches the current project, Iris’s appeal is focused, inspectable evaluation within an agent/MCP workflow—not a broad tracing platform or general prompt-test runner.

Production evaluation versus pre-release testing
Langfuse documents evaluation on production traces as well as datasets; Phoenix documents evaluators in SDK and UI dataset workflows. Promptfoo’s center of gravity is configured test cases and red-team probes. These approaches answer different questions: a test harness can check known cases and probe security before or during release, while production tracing helps a team inspect what happened in actual use. A focused evaluator such as Iris could complement either, if its current inputs and behavior check out.

Prompts, datasets, and experiments
Langfuse and Phoenix both document prompt-management or playground features alongside datasets and experiments. Promptfoo documents matrices for testing prompts, models, and RAG applications. The materials available here do not establish equivalent prompt, dataset, or experiment features for Iris.
Instrumentation and integration
Langfuse lists native SDKs, more than 100 integrations, and OpenTelemetry support. Phoenix is built around OpenTelemetry and OpenInference, with framework and provider instrumentation. Promptfoo emphasizes provider coverage and its explicit MCP testing and integration flows. Confirm that your existing application stack is supported before selecting on instrumentation alone.
How to decide
- Start with the job. If the main gap is understanding production behavior and improving prompts from those observations, shortlist Langfuse and Phoenix. If it is repeatable pre-release evaluation or red teaming, start with Promptfoo. Treat Iris as a candidate only after verifying the live project and integration details.
- Map evaluation to where it runs. Decide whether checks need to run in application code, against saved datasets, on live traffic, in CI/CD, or directly against an MCP server. The tools overlap, but their documented workflows emphasize different locations.
- Check deployment and governance separately. Compare hosting, retention, access controls, compliance, workload limits, and support for the exact edition or plan. Do not infer these from an “open-source” label or assume self-hosted and managed offerings are equivalent.
- Test a representative workflow. Use your own traces or test cases to check instrumentation effort, useful failure explanations, and whether results fit the team’s release and incident processes. No independent comparative speed or accuracy result is established here.
Can these tools be used together?
Yes. They address overlapping but distinct stages of quality work, so a tracing platform and a test harness can be complementary rather than mutually exclusive. For example, a team could use production observability to investigate behavior after deployment and a separate harness to run controlled checks in CI/CD. Whether that combination is worthwhile depends on the cost of maintaining integrations and duplicated evaluation logic.
