Angular’s worker caches versioned application assets and can cache selected runtime data, but a partial or stale deployment can leave clients with incompatible files. This guide covers release integrity, cache configuration, update prompts, diagnostics, and the documented deactivation path.
What Angular’s service worker does—and where it fits
Angular’s built-in service worker caches application resources to support faster repeat visits and simple offline use. Angular describes it as “a basic caching utility for simple offline support with a limited featureset” in its service-worker overview. It requires a secure context: use HTTPS in production; localhost is the documented development exception.
It is useful when an application needs straightforward, build-aware asset caching. It is not a general-purpose offline platform. If the application needs advanced caching rules or offline workflows, evaluate native browser APIs rather than assuming Angular’s worker can cover every case.
Angular service worker deployment: build and ship a coherent release
Set up and build
For a CLI project, Angular’s getting-started guide uses ng add @angular/pwa. The setup adds the service-worker package, configures CLI build support and registration, and creates ngsw-config.json. The configuration is processed during ng build; its file patterns refer to the deployment directory, typically the project’s dist output.

To test service-worker behavior locally, follow Angular’s production-build walkthrough and serve the production output rather than relying on a development server. When stale content is suspected, isolate the test from existing registrations and cached state so an old worker does not obscure the result.
Keep manifest and resources together
Angular’s CLI generates ngsw.json from ngsw-config.json. The manifest records hashes for covered files; a changed manifest signals a new application version. The worker uses those hashes to validate the resource collection it serves.
Deploy the manifest and all resources for its build together. A tab may still request a lazy-loaded chunk from the version it originally opened, so replacing only some files can break that tab. Angular’s service-worker DevOps guide warns: “A non-atomic deployment could result in the Angular service worker having visibility of partially updated content”. Publish each release atomically where possible, and check origin, CDN, and other intermediary cache policies so they do not combine a new manifest with old assets—or the reverse.

If a resource hash fails validation, the worker can enter a degraded or fallback mode instead of knowingly serving an inconsistent application. Treat an ngsw.json hash mismatch as a release-integrity incident: verify that the manifest and referenced files came from the same build and that intermediaries are not serving stale pieces.

Configure asset and runtime-data caching intentionally
ngsw-config.json distinguishes build assets from runtime requests. Asset groups describe files included in the build. URL resource groups cover runtime resources such as CDN-hosted items and do not have build-time content hashes. Data groups apply explicit cache policies to matching API or data requests. Matching is ordered: the first data group that matches a request wins, so put specific URL patterns before broad ones.
Asset groups: prefetch or lazy
For asset groups, installMode controls when matching assets are downloaded for a version. Choose based on whether immediate availability or reduced initial downloading matters more.

| Mode | Behavior | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
prefetch |
Download changed matching assets immediately as the new version is installed. | Assets are ready sooner, at the cost of downloading them whether or not the user requests them. |
lazy |
Download matching assets only when they are requested. | Can defer unnecessary downloads, but a resource may not be cached until it is first used. |
updateMode: lazy is valid only when installMode: lazy is also set. Use it when a lazy asset should be refreshed only after it has been requested, rather than downloading changed copies as part of an update.
Data groups: performance or freshness
Data-group policies are for runtime requests, not versioned build assets. Select URLs and cache limits according to how current and how sensitive the data is; caching API responses is not automatically appropriate for every endpoint.
| Strategy | How requests are served | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
performance |
Cache-first: serve a cached response when available. | Favors speed and can serve cached results offline, but may return stale data within the configured age. |
freshness |
Network-first: prefer a network response, then use the cache if the request exceeds its configured timeout. | Favors current data when the network responds; timeout fallback can provide cached data when it does not. |
For each data group, set URL matches, maximum age, cache size, and—where applicable—timeout and versioning to reflect the data’s actual freshness and privacy requirements. Review broad patterns carefully: an overly broad first match may apply an unintended policy to requests that need different treatment. See Angular’s configuration reference for the supported fields and syntax.

Angular service worker not updating: understand the version lifecycle
When the app opens or refreshes, the worker checks ngsw.json. If it detects a new version, it downloads and caches that version. Existing tabs normally continue using the version with which they started; a subsequent load or reload receives the newly installed version. This avoids changing resources underneath a running app, but means users may not see an update until they reopen or reload.
Applications can use SwUpdate to request update checks, observe available versions, and deliberately activate an update. Angular documents this communication in Communicating with the service worker. If the app offers an immediate reload, make the choice visible and account for unsaved user work: activating a version can interrupt a session that is still using the old one.
How to debug Angular service worker and cache issues
Start with the worker’s own status
Open the application’s /ngsw/state endpoint and inspect the driver state, latest manifest hash, last update check, and debug log. Angular documents states including NORMAL, EXISTING_CLIENTS_ONLY, and SAFE_MODE; these describe the worker’s operating condition, not generic browser errors.

Inspect browser registrations and caches
Use browser developer tools to inspect service-worker registrations and Cache Storage. Refresh the cache viewer if it appears stale. Angular cautions that leaving developer tools open can keep a worker alive and alter lifecycle behavior, so close the tools and retest when diagnosing an issue that depends on shutdown or update timing.
Bypass the worker for a request
For a request that should avoid service-worker handling—for example, a feature the worker does not support—send the ngsw-bypass request header or add ngsw-bypass as a query parameter. The value may be empty. This is a targeted bypass, not a fix for a mismatched deployment.
Deactivate a bad worker safely
Angular documents an emergency recovery mechanism: rename or remove ngsw.json so the worker’s manifest request returns 404. That response causes the worker to clear its caches and deregister. Because this changes behavior for clients as they contact the deployed app, test the incident procedure before relying on it in production.
The service-worker package also includes safety-worker.js to help remove unwanted workers. Angular warns that it cannot simply be registered directly as a replacement: existing clients with cached state may not see the new index that registers it. Follow Angular’s current documented failsafe procedure instead of improvising a worker replacement.
Release and support checklist
- Build the release with the intended
ngsw-config.json, and verify thatngsw.jsoncorresponds to the deployed files. - Publish the manifest and all referenced assets as one coherent release; review origin and CDN caching for stale mixed-version responses.
- Place specific data-group matches before broad matches, and choose cache policy, age, size, timeout, and versioning per endpoint.
- Decide how users learn about an available update and whether an immediate activation is safe for their current work.
- For incidents, check
/ngsw/state, browser registrations, Cache Storage, and whether a request can be isolated withngsw-bypass. - Keep a tested deactivation procedure based on Angular’s documented manifest-404 failsafe.
For general CLI hosting considerations, see Angular’s deployment reference.
