Indexes can make reads much faster, but each one that a database must maintain adds work to writes and consumes storage; wider indexes can also increase I/O and memory pressure. There is no reliable universal percentage or per-index penalty: the impact depends on the database engine, which indexes a write changes, and the workload. The practical answer is to compare read gains with write latency, index size, cache use, and maintenance effort under representative conditions.
What overhead does an index add?
An index gives the database another structure for finding rows, so a query may avoid scanning a whole table. PostgreSQL’s documentation describes both sides of the tradeoff: indexes can retrieve specific rows much faster, but add overhead to the system and should be used sensibly (PostgreSQL 18: Indexes).
That overhead is not a fixed charge shared equally by every index. It depends on the engine, index type and width, data changes, and whether the index serves frequent queries. Official guidance describes the mechanisms, but does not establish a general-purpose percentage for how much indexes slow a database.
Writes maintain the indexes they affect
Inserts and deletes add or remove index entries. An update may require changes to indexes whose keys or included values are affected; it does not necessarily rewrite every index. MongoDB notes that updates affect a subset of indexes depending on which keys change, and that sparse or partial indexes are maintained only for documents they include (MongoDB: Write Operation Performance). MySQL likewise explains that inserts, updates, and deletes require index maintenance (MySQL: Optimization and Indexes).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
So, yes: indexes can slow inserts and updates, but the amount depends on which indexes the operation touches and the workload. A write that changes an indexed key has different maintenance work from one that changes an unrelated column.
Storage and cache footprint grow
Indexes occupy storage, and larger structures require more pages to read and keep in memory. SQL Server’s design guidance warns that broad covering indexes can increase storage and I/O and reduce cache efficiency: when fewer index rows fit on a page, more pages may be needed for the same work (SQL Server Index Architecture and Design Guide). If memory is limited, the extra pages can mean additional disk I/O.

Can too many indexes hurt performance?
Yes. Indexes that add little value can burden writes, occupy cache and disk space, and add work for the optimizer. But index count alone is not a useful threshold: one wide or frequently changed index can have a different cost from a narrow index that serves an important query. The relevant question is whether each index earns its continuing cost in the actual workload.
Check the workload, not just the column
A query mentioning a column does not by itself prove that a particular index helps. Look at recurring queries, their filters, joins, sort order, and selected columns; then verify that the optimizer uses the index and that the plan improves. Key order matters for composite indexes, and optimizer estimates matter when interpreting plans.

PostgreSQL recommends using realistic data, refreshing statistics with ANALYZE, inspecting plans, and comparing behavior with and without candidate indexes rather than relying on a universal recipe (PostgreSQL: Examining Index Usage). SQL Server similarly recommends checking index usage and removing indexes that are not useful to the workload (SQL Server Index Architecture and Design Guide).
Look for redundant or overly broad indexes
Before adding an index, check whether an existing one already covers the important query pattern. A near-duplicate may be better handled by modifying an existing index—for example, adding a small number of included columns—than by maintaining another structure. On heavily updated tables, narrow indexes can limit avoidable maintenance. A filtered index can also reduce the indexed subset when queries repeatedly target a well-defined portion of the data.

Do not label an index unused based on a brief or atypical observation window. Include the normal workload cycle and important infrequent jobs in the review; otherwise, an index serving a periodic report or seasonal workload may appear idle.

- Read benefit: latency and resource use for frequent queries that use the index.
- Write cost: throughput and latency for inserts, updates, and deletes that affect it.
- Footprint: index size and its resulting I/O and cache demands.
- Usage and redundancy: whether real queries use the index and whether another index already supports the same work.
- Operational cost: time, locking or concurrency effects, and recovery constraints for maintenance.
Test a proposed index on representative data, inspect actual query plans and index-usage metrics, and compare performance with and without it. Keep it when its read benefit justifies its write, storage, and operational costs; consolidate or remove it when measurements show that it is redundant or not useful across an appropriate observation period.
When should you rebuild or remove an index?
Neither rebuilding nor removing an index should be a routine response to a single metric. In SQL Server, maintenance decisions should consider both fragmentation and page density. Low page density means more pages may need to be read and cached, but a density or fragmentation figure alone does not prove that a rebuild will improve the workload (Microsoft: Optimize index maintenance to improve query performance and reduce resource consumption).
Choose maintenance based on measured impact
First identify the affected queries and resources, then determine whether index condition is plausibly contributing to the observed problem. Weigh any expected benefit against the work and availability constraints of the maintenance operation. Avoid universal rebuild thresholds: the sources do not establish a cutoff that applies across workloads and versions.
Account for locking and rebuild constraints
For PostgreSQL, a standard REINDEX can block writes to the table while it runs. REINDEX CONCURRENTLY avoids that normal write blocking, but performs two table scans per index and has additional restrictions. If a concurrent rebuild fails, an invalid leftover index can still consume update overhead even though queries ignore it. Check the applicable PostgreSQL version’s requirements and inspect for an invalid index after a failure (PostgreSQL 18: REINDEX).
Remove an index only when workload evidence shows it is unused or redundant over a sufficiently representative period and you have considered less frequent workloads. After a change, verify the relevant reads and writes rather than assuming that fewer indexes automatically means a faster system.
