A slow coding-agent run is not necessarily slow token generation. Measure the remote request in stages, then time patch application and a focused test separately. Repeated runs and percentile comparisons can help locate where the tail grows; a spinner or one average cannot tell you which phase is responsible.

What this latency test can—and cannot—tell you

The workflow is a diagnostic harness for one coding loop: prepare a prompt, request remote generation, apply a patch, and run a focused test. Its purpose is to separate delays along that path, not to rank models, evaluate code quality, or establish a service-level guarantee.

A local-only run follows a different path from a remote request. It cannot measure the network route or remote service behavior, so do not treat local and remote timings as interchangeable benchmarks. Likewise, the printed percentile values in the source article are explicitly synthetic dry-run output—not measurements from a live endpoint.

Measure the wait in distinct phases

Where the client exposes the relevant timestamps, record separate durations for connection setup, time to first byte (TTFB), response-body transfer, patch application, and the focused test. For HTTP, useful subphases include DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS negotiation, start transfer, and total time. curl provides timing variables for these milestones in its official man page.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the definitions precise: TTFB is the interval from beginning the request to receiving the first response byte. It can include more than server generation, such as request handling and queueing; body time covers the remainder of the response transfer. A client’s field names do not guarantee that it has isolated these intervals correctly.

Record repeatable runs, not anecdotes

  1. Choose one workload and endpoint. Keep the prompt, request format, endpoint, and response handling consistent when comparing configurations. A real endpoint may require authentication, a provider-specific payload, streaming support, or other protocol details; a generic JSON example is not plug-and-play integration.
  2. Capture one record per run. Save a JSON line with a run identifier, status or error, request and response byte counts where available, and each measured phase. Include the endpoint and client configuration needed to interpret the result, without recording secrets or sensitive prompt content.
  3. Repeat under comparable conditions. The source article suggests trying 50 samples and then 200, and mentions a 20-run curl comparison. These are workflow suggestions, not validated sample-size rules. Use enough repeated runs to see variability, and keep endpoint, workload, and other conditions comparable.
  4. Compare p50 and p99 for each phase. The median (p50) describes a typical run in the sample; p99 highlights the slow tail. A single mean can conceal intermittent delays, and a p99 from a small sample is particularly unstable. Report the sample count and conditions alongside percentiles; do not present a percentile as a universal property of a service.
  5. Change one variable at a time. For example, compare a cold connection with a client that truly reuses connections, holding the other factors steady. This makes an observed shift easier to interpret, though it does not by itself prove the cause.

Use the timing pattern to choose what to inspect

These patterns are diagnostic hypotheses, not causal guarantees. First confirm that the timings are separately and correctly instrumented.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Connection or TLS time has a long tail: inspect DNS, routing, handshakes, and whether the HTTP client actually reuses connections. A “keep-alive” label is not evidence of reuse.
  • TTFB has a long tail: investigate request queueing, remote cold starts, or other delays before the first byte. TTFB alone cannot distinguish server generation from those possibilities.
  • Response-body time has a long tail: generation time or transfer conditions become plausible contributors. Compare body size and bytes received before concluding which one dominates.
  • Local patch or test time has a long tail: inspect the local patching and test path. A slow focused test is not evidence that the remote model is slow.

Compare request and response sizes and status or error outcomes along with timings. A fast failed response and a slow successful response are not equivalent results.

Important limits in the published sample code

The article’s displayed Python implementation should not be treated as a validated phase-separated benchmark. In its live_sample, connect_ms and ttfb_ms are both calculated as (ttfb - t0) * 1000. They therefore represent the same interval, rather than separately measuring connection setup and time to first byte.

There is also a connection-reuse mismatch: the implementation calls urllib.request.urlopen for each sample, while the Python 3.14.8 urllib.request documentation says urllib uses HTTP/1.1 and includes a Connection: close header in its HTTP requests. As shown, the code neither demonstrates separated connection timing nor verifies a reused-connection comparison. To compare reuse, use a client whose documented behavior supports the intended session reuse, and instrument each timing boundary independently.

The sample’s sleeps for patching and testing are placeholders; they do not apply a patch or run pytest. Its live mode sends a fixed JSON prompt to a caller-supplied URL, so it is not a general integration for any particular inference provider.
