A computational storage drive (CSD) combines persistent storage with one or more computational storage engines that can perform supported operations on data near where it is stored. Unlike a regular SSD, a CSD includes compute capability as part of the storage device. Its purpose is to reduce data movement or host-processing work for suitable tasks—not to make every application faster automatically.

What is a computational storage drive?

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) defines a computational storage drive as a storage element with persistent data storage and one or more computational storage engines. An engine performs a configured computational storage function, or CSF: a specific operation the device is set up to run on data. SNIA’s computational storage overview and its dictionary provide the formal terminology.

In plain language, a CSD stores data and can also carry out certain computations on it. The exact operations depend on the device and its software; the term does not mean the drive can run arbitrary applications or perform every kind of processing.

How is a CSD different from a regular SSD?

A regular SSD provides persistent storage. A CSD adds computational storage engine capability alongside that storage. An SSD does not become a CSD merely because it is fast or has a controller: the defining distinction is that it includes an engine for performing computational storage functions.

Term What it includes Persistent storage in the device?
Regular SSD Storage; not necessarily a computational storage engine Yes
Computational storage drive (CSD) Persistent storage and one or more computational storage engines Yes
Computational storage processor (CSP) Computational engines associated with a storage system No, not in the processor itself
Computational storage array (CSA) An array containing one or more computational storage engines Depends on the array; SNIA’s term describes the array form

SNIA groups these forms under the broader term computational storage device, or CSx. The labels are not interchangeable: a CSP can provide compute associated with storage without itself storing the data persistently. SNIA’s dictionary defines the terms.

Why put computation near storage?

In a conventional setup, data generally travels from storage to host memory and processors for work. When a task needs to inspect or transform large amounts of data, moving it can consume time and system resources. Computational storage aims to run supported functions closer to the data and may let a system transfer results rather than all of the original data. NVM Express describes computational storage as a way to offload host computation and reduce data movement.

That is an architectural goal, not a performance guarantee. A benefit depends on whether the workload matches a function the device supports, and on the device’s compute resources, interfaces, and software. A task that cannot use the engine may see no advantage from computational storage.

What kinds of work might use a CSD?

SNIA identifies areas such as AI, big data, content delivery, databases, and machine learning as potential application areas for computational storage. These examples describe where moving or processing substantial data may matter; they do not mean every CSD supports or accelerates every workload. SNIA’s computational storage page lists these application areas.

Do CSDs follow a common standard?

SNIA’s Computational Storage Architecture and Programming Model and Computational Storage API define recommended behavior and interfaces. SNIA’s current computational-storage page reports published version 1.1 documents for both. Its technical work group describes interoperability and interfaces for deployment, provisioning, management, and security as goals. SNIA’s standards page and technical work group page describe this work.

Publication of a specification does not establish that every vendor implements it or that products interoperate in every configuration. For a particular CSD, check the vendor’s implementation details and confirm that the host platform and software support the functions you need.

What should you check when evaluating a CSD?

Commercial SSD-based examples have been reported, including Samsung SmartSSD and ScaleFlux CSD in a 2023 review of computational storage devices and near-memory computing. Those are examples cited by that review, not confirmation of current model availability, specifications, prices, or stock. The 2023 review discusses the category and examples.

For a specific device, compare the practical details rather than relying on the CSD label:
