In four runs over two short articles about logical fallacies, I found that text-analysis workflow costs were shaped not just by input tokens, but by how much the model was asked to produce and whether the workflow repeated work. More explicit instructions coincided with fewer extracted terms and classifications in one comparison, while extra post-call prose and a repeated function-call loop coincided with higher costs in another. These are results from my AIDBDeveloper setup—not general benchmarks—and quality review was preliminary.

Miguel Diaz Kusztrich’s account of the trials, published September 21, 2026, describes a practical design principle: “The application should do everything it already knows how to do.” The model should handle uncertainty and interpretation; the application should handle orchestration, storage, and deterministic transformations. Read the original account.

How the text-analysis workflow was divided

The process extracted sentences, split text into words, numbers, and punctuation, extracted multi-word terms, and then applied syntactic, secondary, and free-form classifications. Token classifications ran in batches of five, with ten model instances operating in parallel on different sentences. Later steps reused earlier information where possible, reducing the choices each model call had to make.

The reported model setup used GPT 5.6 Sol with low reasoning effort for sentence extraction, GPT 5.4 mini for tokenization, and GPT 5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort for term extraction and later classifications. Those names and settings describe the trials; they are not recommendations for choosing models today.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What changed across the four runs

Each of two previously written short articles about logical fallacies was processed twice. The trials were not a randomized experiment, and the reported cost differences cannot be attributed to one prompt change alone.

Text and run Configuration or incident Reported outcome
TEXT 1, trial 1 Shorter system messages intended to reduce input tokens. Some cache misses, over-extraction of terms, and excessive classifications.
TEXT 1, trial 2 More explicit system messages. Better cache usage and fewer extracted terms and classifications.
TEXT 2, trial 1 Essentially the improved configuration from TEXT 1. Baseline for the second text’s comparison.
TEXT 2, trial 2 Removed an instruction requiring function calls to finish with only a single full stop, allowing explanatory final messages. More output and a repeated-function-call loop in one step.

What the reported figures show—and do not show

All figures here are Kusztrich’s estimated or theoretical results for these specific runs, not current API price quotations, independently reproduced measurements, or general benchmarks. The workload was reported at roughly 3–8 million tokens and 2,000–3,000 requests per relevant trial.

Measure Reported result Scope
Tokenization 1,650 tokens for TEXT 1; 1,762 tokens for TEXT 2 Unchanged between the two trials for each text, according to Kusztrich.
Extracted terms 1,114 to 431 TEXT 1 after instructions were made more explicit.
Classifications 15,673 to 9,580 TEXT 1 across the instruction change.
Uncached-input cost Almost 73% lower Estimated TEXT 1 comparison.
Combined input-related cost Approximately 18% lower TEXT 1; combines uncached input, cached input, and cache writes.
Output cost Almost 15% lower TEXT 1 comparison.
Output’s share of total estimated cost About 64% TEXT 1 comparison.
Total theoretical cost $11.39 to $9.59, approximately 16% lower TEXT 1 comparison; setup-specific estimate.
Total estimated cost $11.67 to $14.97 TEXT 2 trials; the latter allowed explanatory output and included a repeated-call issue.
Output in one classification step Roughly 234,000 to 426,000 tokens Across the TEXT 2 comparison.

The TEXT 1 comparison is consistent with a useful possibility: clearer instructions can reduce unnecessary extraction and classification work, even when the initial prompt was shortened to save input tokens. It does not isolate prompt clarity as the sole cause of every cost change. Output mattered too: in this setup, it accounted for about 64% of TEXT 1’s estimated total cost. In TEXT 2, the higher-output run also had a looping-call incident, so its increase cannot be assigned to explanatory prose alone.

Cost savings need a quality check

The reported quality review was preliminary, not a formal benchmark. Sentence extraction was described as extremely consistent, and tokenization was identical across equivalent trials. Word-level syntactic classification still needed refinement, though it was considered reasonably good. Multi-word term extraction remained weak; syntactic classification of terms was poorer than word classification, and secondary classification of terms was described as clearly inadequate. Free-form word tags seemed more promising, but were subjective.

That makes raw call or token reductions an incomplete measure of success. A step that produces fewer results can be cheaper because it avoids over-extraction—or cheaper because it misses valid material. The trial report’s quality caveats mean that each reduction should be checked against task-specific correctness before treating it as an improvement.

Practical design lessons for text-analysis pipelines

Keep deterministic operations out of model calls

Use application code for orchestration and repeatable transformations such as splitting text into tokens when those operations are already defined. Reserve model calls for ambiguous or interpretive decisions. Narrow subtasks and reuse prior outputs so later calls do not have to infer information already available.

Control output and bound repeated work

When a workflow consumes structured function results, suppress or constrain unused natural-language final output where the API and interface allow it. Log function calls and inspect for duplicate invocation or loops. A cache can make repeated context cheaper without making a repeated call useful: as Kusztrich puts it, “You can cache an error very efficiently.”

Attribute cost to individual steps

Record the execution configuration, start and end times, inputs and outputs, token usage, and context used. Separate input, cached input, cache writes, output, and retries in step-level logs so the team can locate expensive operations instead of relying only on a workflow-wide total.

Choose models and prompts against quality, not price alone

Measure reliability for each task and compare it with the cost of that step. A model-price substitution in the report illustrates why price-only comparisons can mislead: applying GPT 6 Astra pricing to recorded usage produced a hypothetical estimate of roughly $42–65, or around 4.5 times the actual-model-mix estimate. That calculation uses logged token counts; it does not establish that Astra would consume the same tokens or produce identical results.

Prioritize steps that are both expensive and weak in quality. In those cases, redesigning the task boundaries or process may be more valuable than further prompt tuning. Any efficiency finding from these four runs should be validated against the team’s own texts, quality criteria, current API behavior, and model pricing.
