To connect to a Windows EC2 instance with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), launch the instance with a key pair, allow inbound TCP 3389 from your IP address, retrieve and decrypt the Windows Administrator password with the matching private key, and open the downloaded RDP file in a desktop client. If you do not want a public IPv4 endpoint, AWS also supports RDP through an EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint and a local tunnel.
Choose how you will connect
The right method depends mainly on whether the instance can have a public endpoint and what access infrastructure you can configure.

The steps below cover standard RDP first, followed by the private tunnel option.
Launch and prepare the Windows instance
- In the EC2 console, select the AWS Region where you want the instance, then start launching a Windows AMI. Choose an instance type and select a key pair. The key pair’s private key will be needed to decrypt the generated Administrator password. AWS’s EC2 getting-started guide walks through the launch wizard’s Region, AMI, instance type, key pair, public-IP, and security-group choices.
- Configure networking for the connection method you chose. For public RDP, the instance needs a reachable public endpoint; add a security-group inbound rule for RDP from your connecting IP address. The default security group does not allow inbound RDP. AWS specifies TCP port 3389 for traditional RDP; do not open it to all sources when access from your IP is sufficient. - Launch the instance and wait for its status checks to pass before attempting a connection.
Retrieve the Windows Administrator password
- In the EC2 console, select the instance and choose Connect, then open the RDP client tab.
- Choose the Administrator username that corresponds to the Windows AMI’s language. Choose Get password, upload the matching launch key pair’s
.pemprivate key, and decrypt the password. The AWS identity performing this action must be allowed to callec2:GetPasswordData. - Store the decrypted password securely. You will enter it in the RDP client when prompted.
Password data may not be available immediately after launch. For the specific “not available yet” error covered in its troubleshooting guidance, AWS says to wait at least four minutes and retry; the AWS CLI get-password-data reference recommends waiting up to 15 minutes. These are separate recommendations, not a guaranteed ready time.

If “Get password” is unavailable
- Wait several minutes and try again; password generation can take time.
- Confirm the IAM user or role has permission for
ec2:GetPasswordData. - Check that the private key is the one corresponding to the key pair selected when launching this instance.
- If no key pair was specified at launch, AWS’s generated Windows password cannot be retrieved by this method.
- For an instance created from a custom AMI, password generation may be disabled or the image may use an existing password. AWS covers these cases in its Windows instance troubleshooting guide.
Connect using a desktop RDP client
- On the EC2 console’s RDP client tab, download the remote desktop file.
- On Windows, open Remote Desktop Connection (you can run
mstsc.exe) and open the downloaded.rdpfile. AWS names Windows App for Mac and Remmina for Linux as client options for those platforms. - Check the target and username before connecting. For the standard public route, the file’s default Computer value is the instance’s public IPv4 DNS name.
- Connect and enter the saved Administrator password when prompted. A self-signed certificate warning can appear. If you need to verify the server identity, AWS explains how to compare the certificate thumbprint with the instance system log in its RDP connection instructions.
Connect without a public IPv4 address
An EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint provides a private alternative for RDP when the instance has no public IPv4 address or public DNS name. It is not required for ordinary public RDP. First retrieve the Windows password and download the desktop file as described above. Then use the AWS CLI to open a local tunnel through the endpoint to remote port 3389, choosing a local port for the tunnel. AWS documents the command as aws ec2-instance-connect open-tunnel and provides the endpoint setup and command parameters in its EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint guide.
- Ensure an EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint and the required AWS CLI configuration are in place.
- Run
aws ec2-instance-connect open-tunnelwith the endpoint, instance, remote port 3389, and a chosen local port. Keep the tunnel running while you use RDP. - Edit the downloaded RDP profile so its computer target is
localhost:<local-port>, substituting the local port you selected. - Open the edited profile in your RDP client and authenticate using the decrypted Administrator password.
Secure the account after your first login
After connecting, change the default Administrator password and create a second user with administrator-capable permissions and remote access. Keeping another authorized account provides a recovery option if the initial account becomes unavailable.

Windows Server connection licensing note
AWS states that Windows Server instances include the Windows Server license in the instance price and allow two simultaneous remote connections for administrative purposes. More than two simultaneous connections require an RDS license. This note concerns Windows Server licensing and should not be generalized to other operating systems or licensing arrangements; see AWS’s Windows RDP guidance.
