You can make an original Microsoft Surface RT less cluttered and easier to use, but you cannot upgrade its fixed hardware or bring back current Windows and app support. Microsoft lists 2GB of RAM, a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. Its driver and firmware servicing period has ended, and Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023. The steps below focus on maintenance—not guaranteed speed gains or a return to modern security support.
1. Check for any remaining applicable updates
Previously released updates remain available, but Microsoft says Surface RT is no longer in its driver and firmware servicing period and will not receive new updates. The latest system update listed in Microsoft’s Surface RT update history is dated March 10, 2015.
To check for updates that may still apply, open Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery > Check now. Install any applicable updates Windows Update offers. This check cannot provide new firmware or extend Windows 8.1 support.
2. Free up internal storage carefully
Surface RT was sold with 32GB or 64GB of storage, but the full capacity is not available for personal files: Microsoft notes that system software uses a significant amount and that available space varies with updates and installed apps. Check what is taking space, then remove only apps and files you recognize and no longer need. Back up personal files before deleting them.

Microsoft’s general Surface troubleshooting advice says freeing unnecessary files can help a Surface run faster, but its supported-model list omits Surface RT. Treat cleanup as sensible maintenance, not a guaranteed or measured performance improvement on this tablet. See Microsoft’s Surface RT specifications and general troubleshooting guidance.
3. Store suitable files on a microSDXC card
The tablet has a microSDXC reader as well as full-size USB 2.0. A compatible card can hold some documents and media, helping keep those files off the internal drive. It does not add RAM, automatically enlarge the system partition, or make the processor faster.

Before buying a microSDXC card, verify the exact card’s compatibility and supported capacity for your Surface RT. Microsoft identifies the card-reader type in its specifications; that does not establish that every card or capacity will work.
4. Limit unnecessary startup and background activity
Programs that launch automatically can affect startup time and overall performance as a general Windows maintenance matter. Microsoft’s current advice on startup programs is for newer Surface families and does not name Surface RT, so do not assume its current instructions or menus apply to this tablet.

If you can identify a program that starts automatically and you do not need, disable only that known software using controls available on your device. Avoid changing unfamiliar system components or following instructions that require a modern Windows tool or menu.
5. Close apps and restart when it becomes sluggish
If the tablet feels bogged down, close apps you are not using and try a normal restart. This is a low-risk troubleshooting step, not a tested or quantified speed boost. If the tablet repeatedly freezes, note which task or app was active and investigate that pattern rather than relying on repeated restarts.

Microsoft’s current frozen-device instructions cover newer Surface models, not Surface RT. Do not assume their force-shutdown button timing applies to this tablet; use RT-specific instructions if a normal restart is not possible.

Compare what happens in different tasks and apps. If one app is slow or unreliable while others behave normally, the issue may be app-specific; if the whole tablet struggles, storage pressure or the device’s fixed hardware limits may be contributing. This comparison can help narrow the problem, but it does not identify a cause by itself.

Remove or update an app only when the built-in Windows RT Store and that app’s support allow it. The Store may not offer a current version—or any supported version—for an older app. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting page discusses app-related problems but omits Surface RT, so its modern tools and Surface workflows should not be treated as RT instructions.
7. Back up before considering a reset—and weigh continued use
A reset is a last resort, not a way to restore support or make the tablet equivalent to a newer device. It can remove personal data, and recovery on an old Surface RT may be awkward. Back up important files first, then consult recovery instructions specifically for Surface RT before proceeding. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting page does not establish RT-specific reset or recovery steps.
Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023, and Microsoft lists no further Surface RT driver or firmware updates. That makes realistic security expectations essential: routine cleanup or a reset cannot restore ended support. Avoid using the tablet for activities that require current operating-system security or app support. Microsoft documents the servicing status and update history on its Surface RT update history.
