The Lightning Network lets people make repeated Bitcoin payments through off-chain channels instead of recording each payment as a separate Bitcoin blockchain transaction. Channels can connect through routing nodes, so a payer can reach someone without a direct channel. Bitcoin transactions still anchor channel funding and provide a way to settle or close a channel on-chain.
How does the Lightning Network work?
A Lightning channel is a Bitcoin-backed arrangement between two participants. They first fund it with an on-chain Bitcoin transaction. After that, they can update how the channel’s funds are allocated by agreeing to new balances off-chain. The channel’s latest agreed state is the basis for settlement if the participants close it.
The channel has a total capacity, but that figure is not the same as the amount either participant can send in a particular direction. The participants know their channel’s internal balances; people looking at public network information generally cannot see how those funds are distributed. The Lightning Network overview describes the channel and settlement design, while Lightning Labs’ channel-types guide explains balances and closure.
How a payment reaches someone without a direct channel
- Fund a channel. The participants commit Bitcoin in an on-chain transaction.
- Update channel balances. They exchange payment updates off-chain rather than creating a new blockchain transaction for each transfer.
- Route a payment. To pay someone outside a direct channel, the sender’s node looks for a path through connected channels. Forwarding nodes may charge fees.
- Settle or close. Participants can continue using the channel, close cooperatively, or have either participant initiate an on-chain close without the other’s cooperation.
For a multi-hop payment, time-locked contracts make the transfers along the route contingent on one another: the payment completes across the path or does not complete as intended. This lets connected channels function as a payment network while retaining an on-chain settlement mechanism. The overview sets out the design; the LND guide discusses pathfinding.

How does Lightning make Bitcoin payments faster?
Each Lightning payment does not require its own Bitcoin blockchain transaction. Once a channel is funded, participants can make further balance updates off-chain, reducing the need to wait for an individual on-chain transaction for every payment. The trade-off is that users rely on channel capacity, route availability, and liquidity in the directions their payments need.
Lightning is a scaling approach, not a replacement for Bitcoin’s blockchain: channel funding and settlement still use on-chain transactions. The sources establish this design, but do not provide a current, independently measured network throughput figure. Broad performance claims should not be treated as a specific guaranteed payment rate.

Why can a Lightning payment fail?
A route may appear connected in public network data and still lack enough funds in the needed direction. Total channel capacity alone does not tell a sender whether a particular payment can pass through a channel. Balance distributions are not publicly disclosed, and network information can also differ between nodes or be stale.
- Insufficient directional liquidity: A hop may not have enough funds available to forward the payment in the required direction.
- Route cost: A node’s fee policy may make a route too expensive for the sender’s settings.
- Graph or reachability information: The sender’s node may have incomplete or outdated information about public nodes and channels.
Lightning Labs explains the relationship between route selection and undisclosed balances in its sending-payments guide, and describes liquidity management in its liquidity guide. Its gossip guide notes that nodes can have different views of the network graph.

What are Lightning fees?
There is no single universal Lightning fee. Routing nodes set their own policies, which can include a fixed base fee and a proportional fee based on payment size. The sender’s node considers advertised fees when selecting a route, so the route and cost may vary from one payment to another.
Fees are part of the incentive for nodes to commit capital to channels. A costly route may be unattractive to the sender; a fee that does not compensate a node for its capital may be unattractive to the node. Lightning Labs’ channel-fees guide describes base and proportional fee policies.

What is inbound liquidity?
Inbound liquidity is the capacity available for funds to move into your side of a channel. If you want to receive a Lightning payment, a channel needs enough capacity in the direction that payment must travel. A channel can have substantial total capacity and still lack sufficient inbound capacity for a particular payment.
A Lightning Service Provider (LSP) may open a channel to provide inbound capacity or help move funds between on-chain and off-chain Bitcoin. Lightning Labs’ LSP guide says providers may charge for mining fees and capital costs. Custody and control arrangements are not identical across services, so check a provider’s current terms and how funds can be recovered before relying on it.

Are Lightning payments private?
Lightning uses onion routing to limit what forwarding nodes learn about a payment’s route. An intermediary sees the channel from which it received the payment and the next channel to which it forwards it, rather than the entire route. The recipient sees the final hop.
This is a routing-privacy feature, not a guarantee that all Lightning activity is anonymous. Lightning Labs’ pathfinding guide describes what intermediaries can see.
Should you manage channels yourself or use an LSP?
The right arrangement depends on how much channel management you want to do and who controls the funds. Self-managed channels give you direct responsibility for channel funding and liquidity. An LSP-supported service may help with inbound capacity or on-chain/off-chain swaps, but its fees, custody model, and recovery options depend on the provider.
Quick Recap
- Who controls the funds? Understand whether you retain control and what happens if the provider is unavailable.
- Who manages liquidity? Determine whether you must manage channel balances yourself or the service helps provide capacity.
- What costs apply? Consider provider charges as well as the Bitcoin transaction costs of funding, swapping, or closing channels.
- Will it work for your payments? Reliability depends on available routes and liquidity for the payment patterns you expect.
- How can you close or recover funds? Check the service’s procedures and the channel’s on-chain close options before committing funds.
