PostgreSQL and MySQL can both be extended and tuned, but they do it in different ways. PostgreSQL packages database objects as extensions; MySQL has separate component and plugin frameworks. Both also expose configuration and query-planning controls. For AI retrieval, pgvector is one PostgreSQL option, while the cited MySQL vector-store and RAG workflow is specific to MySQL HeatWave.

What does “plug in” mean in a database?

It can mean adding code or objects that give a database new capabilities, or enabling a feature supplied by a managed-service provider. That is different from tuning the behavior of the database you already run.

  • Extensions, components, and plugins add capabilities through mechanisms supported by the database server.
  • Configuration and optimizer controls change how the server uses resources or plans queries; they do not necessarily install new functionality.
  • Managed-service features are capabilities provided by a particular hosting product. They may depend on that provider’s supported versions, settings, and operational model.

These categories overlap in what they help you accomplish, but they are not interchangeable. Before choosing one, identify the database release, hosting environment, privileges available to you, and whether a change requires a restart or can be applied at runtime.

What can you plug into PostgreSQL?

Extensions package related database objects

A PostgreSQL extension can group SQL objects such as types, functions, operators, and index support, and may include compiled code. The PostgreSQL 18 documentation describes extensions as a way to package related objects; its example notes that a new data type may need associated functions, operators, and index operator classes.

Installing an extension has two distinct parts. Its files must first be available to the PostgreSQL server—often through a package such as postgresql-contrib for supplied modules. Then an authorized user registers it in a particular database with CREATE EXTENSION extension_name;. Registration is per database, not automatically for every database on the server. The PostgreSQL 17 CREATE EXTENSION documentation describes this command behavior.

  1. Check server-side availability. Confirm that the extension’s control and SQL files, and any required compiled code, are installed for the server release and hosting environment.
  2. Check name, version, and privileges. The extension name is not proof that its files are installed. Installation usually requires the privileges needed to create its constituent objects, unless the extension is marked trusted.
  3. Register it in the intended database. Connect to that database and run CREATE EXTENSION extension_name; with the required privileges.
  4. Confirm the result and plan upgrades. Check the installed extension and version using the tools available in your environment, then follow that extension’s upgrade instructions when changing versions.

On a managed PostgreSQL service, the provider controls which extensions and versions are available and may impose additional permission or configuration requirements. For example, Google Cloud SQL publishes support by PostgreSQL major version; its compatibility information should be checked against the engine release you plan to use.

How does MySQL’s plugin model differ?

MySQL 8.4 documents two distinct ways to extend server capabilities: components and plugins. Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual says, “MySQL Server includes a component-based infrastructure for extending server capabilities.” A component interacts with the server through provided services. The separate plugin API supports plugin types that include storage engines, Information Schema tables, full-text parser plugins, and other server extensions.

Mechanism What it is Installation and lifecycle considerations
PostgreSQL extension A package of related database objects, potentially including compiled code. Files must be available to the server; registration with CREATE EXTENSION is per database. Privileges and trust status matter.
MySQL component A server extension that interacts through component services. Check the component’s installation and management instructions for your MySQL release and deployment.
MySQL plugin A separate server extension mechanism with plugin types such as storage engines and full-text parser plugins. Plugins may be loaded at startup or, for supported cases, loaded and unloaded at runtime. Check the specific plugin’s lifecycle requirements.

Do not treat “extension,” “component,” and “plugin” as synonyms when reading product documentation. Find the mechanism the capability actually uses, then verify that your server build or service supports it and that your account can install or manage it. MySQL 8.4’s component and plugin documentation describes the frameworks; a capability’s own instructions determine the exact steps.

What should you tune in PostgreSQL?

PostgreSQL 18 organizes server controls into areas including connections and authentication, resource consumption, WAL, replication, query planning, logging, monitoring, and vacuuming. Start with an observed problem—such as memory pressure, slow queries, excessive log volume, or replication lag—and investigate the settings for that area instead of applying a general-purpose tuning recipe.

Memory: treat shared_buffers as a starting point, not a target

For a dedicated database server with at least 1 GB of RAM, the PostgreSQL 18 documentation calls 25% of system memory a reasonable starting value for shared_buffers. That is contextual guidance, not a guaranteed optimum. The setting can be changed only at server start, and the documentation says that allocating more than 40% of RAM is unlikely to work better in many cases because PostgreSQL also relies on the operating-system cache.

Check the hosting environment’s configuration controls and restart process before changing this setting. Afterward, assess the actual workload and system memory use rather than assuming that a larger buffer allocation improves performance.

Planning: measure plans, not just query duration

Planner settings influence the choices PostgreSQL makes when constructing a query plan. A setting change can reduce planning time while producing inferior plans, so a faster planning step is not necessarily a faster query overall. Compare plans and execution behavior for representative queries before and after any change. The documented default for default_statistics_target is 100; that default is not a claim that 100 is optimal for every dataset.

What can you tune in MySQL 8.4?

MySQL 8.4 exposes startup options, system variables, and optimizer controls. Oracle’s Reference Manual describes system variables as values that affect server operation. Many can be set at startup; many can also be changed dynamically, while some are read-only. Inspect current values with SHOW VARIABLES or the Performance Schema system-variable tables.

Check scope and change behavior

A variable may apply globally or to a session, and it may be startup-only, dynamically changeable, or read-only. Check the variable’s documentation for scope, permitted changes, and required privileges before issuing a setting change. Do not assume a runtime change persists across a restart; use the documented configuration method for the deployment if it must persist.

Choose optimizer controls that match the query problem

MySQL 8.4’s optimizer controls include system variables that affect plan evaluation, switchable optimizations, optimizer and index hints, the cost model, and optimizer statistics. These controls operate at different levels: a hint can target a query or index choice, while other settings affect broader optimizer behavior. Verify the scope of the control and compare plans and query behavior on representative data before keeping a change.

As with PostgreSQL, there is no universally safe collection of values. The appropriate control depends on the MySQL release, query, schema, statistics, workload, and privileges of the account making the change.

Can PostgreSQL or MySQL support vector search and RAG?

PostgreSQL with pgvector

pgvector is an open-source PostgreSQL extension for storing embeddings and performing vector similarity search. It offers a way to keep embeddings alongside relational data, with vector types and index options documented by the project. The compatible pgvector versions and available features depend on the PostgreSQL version and hosting environment. Google Cloud SQL’s documentation, for example, lists support by PostgreSQL major version; check the provider’s current matrix rather than assuming every host offers the same extension version or index support.

MySQL HeatWave’s vector-store workflow

The MySQL vector-store and RAG workflow described in the MySQL HeatWave User Guide is specific to the HeatWave service, not a general feature claim for every self-managed MySQL installation. Its guide describes loading unstructured documents from object storage, parsing and segmenting them, creating embeddings, and using semantic search for retrieval-augmented generation. The HeatWave documentation also covers accelerated query processing and machine-learning and generative-AI features within that service ecosystem.

Compare the deployment, not just the database name

For a vector-search or RAG project, assess the complete system that will run the workload:

  • Whether you are self-managing the database or using a managed service.
  • The database release, extension or service-feature version, and provider support for the needed search and index capabilities.
  • Who can install or enable the feature, and whether changes require a restart or can be applied dynamically.
  • Where source documents and embeddings live, and whether the workflow moves data between services.
  • The operational work your team will own, including upgrades, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • How the full workload behaves in a benchmark that reflects your data and queries; the feature descriptions alone do not establish which option will perform better.

A practical way to choose what to add or change

  1. Name the need. Decide whether you need new database functionality, a change to server or query behavior, or a managed-service capability.
  2. Confirm compatibility. Match the database release and hosting environment to the extension, component, plugin, or service feature and its version.
  3. Check operational constraints. Verify installation privileges, database scope where applicable, restart requirements, runtime behavior, and how to persist configuration.
  4. Test the workload. Establish a baseline, make a controlled change, and compare results using representative queries and data.
  5. Plan ownership. Account for upgrades, monitoring, backups, maintenance, and any data movement introduced by the chosen feature.
