You can still manage a Windows Server 2012 instance or customer-owned custom AMI that is already in your AWS account, but AWS no longer publishes Windows Server 2012 images for new launches. AWS ended public distribution of Windows Server 2012 RTM and 2012 R2 AMIs on October 10, 2023, when those versions reached end of support. For a new deployment, first confirm you have installation media and that your Microsoft license permits the intended AWS use; for modernization, choose between an in-place upgrade and a side-by-side migration.
Can you launch a new Windows Server 2012 instance on AWS?
Not through the normal selection of current AWS-published Windows AMIs. AWS stopped publishing or distributing Windows Server 2012 RTM and 2012 R2 AMIs on October 10, 2023. AWS says this change did not affect instances already running or custom AMIs owned in customer accounts. An old AMI’s past presence in AWS’s history does not mean it remains selectable for a fresh launch. See AWS’s Windows AMI version history.
If your account still has a running instance or customer-owned custom AMI, you may be able to continue working with that resource. Account-specific access and the state of a particular image must be checked in your AWS account; public documentation does not establish that every user can access or launch a 2012 image today.
Choose the route that matches your starting point
- Preserve an existing server: Identify its dependencies, back up the workload, and assess whether an in-place upgrade is viable or whether the application can be moved to a new instance.
- Build a new 2012 environment: Confirm that you have the required installation media and that your Microsoft licensing terms allow the intended deployment on AWS. AWS’s general guidance describes both license-included use of end-of-support versions with customer-provided media and BYOL with customer-provided media and a custom AMI. It does not determine eligibility for your specific license.
- Modernize rather than recreate 2012: Launch a suitable newer Windows Server image and migrate the workload, if its application and dependencies allow it. AWS updates its public Windows AMIs monthly, so consult the current Windows AMI reference when choosing a destination image.
AWS’s standard Windows AMI workflow describes selecting an image, launching an EC2 instance, retrieving the Administrator password, and connecting with Remote Desktop. That general workflow is not a way to locate a newly published 2012 image. The reference also documents historical Windows Server 2012 R2 AMI details, including EC2Config as the launch agent through that version; it should not be read as a statement that AWS currently offers those AMIs.

In-place upgrade or side-by-side migration?
AWS documents two broad paths for moving an EC2 Windows server to a newer version. Which fits depends on whether the existing instance must be retained and how readily its applications and configuration can be moved. AWS does not provide workload-specific downtime estimates, compatibility results, or cost comparisons, so those require environment-specific assessment. See AWS’s Windows Server upgrade guidance.

When an in-place upgrade may fit
Consider this path when the existing server’s configuration is difficult to reproduce and keeping its roles, settings, and data together is important. It avoids porting the workload to a separate instance, but it does not remove the need to check application compatibility: AWS notes that incompatibilities can cause upgrade errors. Test the process against a recoverable copy where possible and plan how to restore service if the upgrade fails.

When side-by-side migration may fit
Choose this path when you can build a new server and move the application and data in a controlled way. AWS describes using an appropriate public or private Windows AMI, an AMI shared with you, or a custom AMI created with EC2 Image Builder for the new instance. It can reduce upgrade-related issues, but provisioning, porting, configuration adjustments, and cutover generally require more planning and work.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance says license-included EC2 can be available for legacy Windows Server versions, including versions that have reached end of support, but the customer must provide the installation media. For BYOL, the customer must also provide media and create a custom AMI; AWS identifies VM Import/Export as one way to create an AMI. These general descriptions do not establish that a particular Windows Server 2012 license qualifies. Check the applicable Microsoft agreement and AWS deployment arrangement before preparing an image. For license-included Windows Server EC2 instances, AWS says two Remote Desktop connections are included for administrative purposes only. That allowance does not authorize general user access; additional Remote Desktop Services use has separate licensing considerations.

Practical checks before you proceed
- Identify what you have. Determine whether the workload is on a running instance, in a customer-owned custom AMI, or needs to be created from media. Do not assume an AWS-published 2012 image can be selected in the launch flow.
- Confirm media and licensing. Locate usable installation media and verify that your license and AWS arrangement permit the planned use.
- Inventory the workload. Record server roles, application configuration, data, and dependencies that must remain available. The AWS upgrade guidance does not supply a workload-specific compatibility checklist.
- Select the route. Weigh retaining the current instance against the effort of provisioning a new one and porting the workload. Build and test a recovery and cutover plan appropriate to the application.
- For a new destination, select a current image. Review the AWS Windows AMI reference for available newer versions; monthly updates to public Windows AMIs do not mean a Windows Server 2012 AMI is available.
