The sequence below follows Microsoft’s Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 instructions; confirm the exact OS version and applicable updates before using it.
How do I create a failover cluster in Windows Server 2012?
Use the same Windows Server version on every intended node. Plan shared storage and network roles before starting, and use a domain account with administrator rights on each node. The account that creates the cluster must also be allowed to create its computer object in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), unless a domain administrator prestages the object. 1. Plan nodes, storage, and hardware
- Choose the nodes and confirm each can access the intended clustered storage. If you add storage during cluster creation, all nodes must be able to reach it.
- Verify that the hardware configuration is certified for the specific Windows Server version. Microsoft’s support criteria require certified hardware and a complete pass of cluster validation.
- For a multipath storage design, install and configure Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) on every node using multiple data paths. MPIO is specific to multipath scenarios, not a requirement for every cluster.
Microsoft’s historical Hyper-V infrastructure deployment guide describes presenting storage to the relevant nodes, with VM files and a witness disk among the storage considerations. The correct layout depends on your storage system and topology.
2. Install Failover Clustering on every node
In Server Manager, select Manage > Add Roles and Features. Proceed through the wizard, select each intended server, and add the Failover Clustering feature and its management tools. Repeat for every node.

3. Validate the complete configuration
In Failover Cluster Manager, select Validate Configuration, add all intended nodes, and run all tests. The PowerShell alternative is:
Test-Cluster -Node Server1, Server2Replace the example names with your actual nodes. Full test coverage requires at least two nodes. Review the validation report and address failures; investigate warnings in context rather than treating them as automatic approval. Microsoft states that its cluster support criteria require the complete configuration to pass validation and hardware certified for the Windows Server version in use. Validation is a support gate, not optional paperwork.

4. Create the cluster
- In Failover Cluster Manager, select Create Cluster.
- Add the nodes you validated and proceed through the wizard.
- Enter the administrative cluster name and select or provide a management network address where applicable.
- Review the option to add eligible storage now or configure it later. Add only storage that is intended for clustered use and accessible to every node.
- Review the summary and complete creation. Then inspect the cluster’s nodes, storage, and networks in Failover Cluster Manager.
Allow time for the cluster name to register in DNS and for directory and DNS changes to replicate before relying on name resolution from other systems.
How do I set up a Hyper-V failover cluster?
Creating the cluster does not by itself make virtual machines highly available. Configure its storage, quorum, and network behavior, install Hyper-V on each node, and add the VM as a clustered role.

Configure storage and Cluster Shared Volumes
Confirm the nodes see the intended shared disks and that the storage is configured for the cluster. If the design calls for Cluster Shared Volumes (CSVs), add the appropriate disks to CSVs after cluster creation. The 2012 deployment guide treats VM storage and witness storage as separate planning concerns and describes adding storage to CSVs. Follow the applicable Microsoft and storage-vendor instructions for your actual topology.
Set quorum and cluster network roles
Configure quorum for the number and arrangement of nodes, using a witness where appropriate to the design. Configure cluster networks so their roles and priorities suit the traffic they carry. Microsoft’s Windows Server 2012 guidance distinguishes management, cluster communication, and live migration network purposes; do not assume one network layout fits every environment.

Install Hyper-V and add a clustered VM role
- Install the Hyper-V role on every node that may own or run the virtual machines.
- In Failover Cluster Manager, open Roles and start the High Availability Wizard.
- Select Virtual Machine and follow the wizard to add the VM to the cluster.
- Move the role to another node as a planned test and check that ownership and failover behavior match the intended design.
Windows Server 2012 version and support considerations
The version-specific Microsoft instructions cover Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Verify which release and updates are installed before applying wizard steps, because current cluster documentation may show newer tooling. Microsoft’s current failover-cluster creation article is useful as a broad workflow comparison, but the archived guide is the relevant reference for the 2012 interface. Configuration instructions alone do not establish lifecycle or support status for a particular 2012 edition or deployment; check current Microsoft lifecycle and support information for that environment.
