Convert PNGs to WebP only after deciding whether you need exact pixel reconstruction, checking transparency and metadata requirements, and confirming that your target browsers and applications can read the result. Google’s cwebp tool supports both lossy and lossless conversion; the best choice depends on the image and how it will be used.
Choose lossless or lossy WebP
WebP offers two encoding modes, and they serve different purposes. Lossless encoding is the choice when the decoded image must reproduce the original pixels exactly. Lossy encoding can reduce file size further, but it trades fidelity for compression, so inspect the result rather than assuming a particular quality setting will suit every PNG.
| Mode | When to choose it | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Exact reconstruction matters. | Compare output size; the -q factor influences compression speed and file size in this mode. |
| Lossy | You can accept some visual change in exchange for compression. | Review the rendered image at its intended display size. Lower -q values mean smaller files and lower quality. |
Google’s WebP overview says lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs, but does not state a publication year or methodology on that page. Treat that as a general comparison, not a forecast for your files; measure your own converted images.
Convert a PNG with Google’s cwebp tool
Google documents cwebp for compressing supported image inputs, including PNG. Its general command structure is cwebp [options] input_file -o output_file.webp. The Getting Started guide’s example is:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
Here, -q 80 selects a quality factor. The meaning of -q depends on the mode: in lossy mode it controls the quality-versus-size trade-off, while in lossless mode it affects compression speed and file size. To request lossless encoding, use -lossless:
cwebp -lossless image.png -o image.webp
For lossy output, choose an initial quality setting, then inspect the actual file and appearance. Neither the example setting nor Google’s general size comparison guarantees a particular output size or visual result for your image. See Google’s cwebp command-line documentation and Getting Started guide for command details.

Validate transparency and image edges
WebP supports transparency in both lossy and lossless modes. For PNGs with an alpha channel, check that transparent regions remain transparent and inspect edges around objects against both light and dark backgrounds. Lossy conversion can make edge artifacts more noticeable; the encoder also provides a separate control for alpha compression quality.
The -exact option preserves RGB values in fully transparent pixels. Use it when those hidden color values matter to a downstream workflow; otherwise, test whether the ordinary output behaves correctly in the applications that consume it. Do not infer correct transparency solely from the file extension.

Decide which metadata to retain
cwebp does not copy metadata by default. If your workflow relies on embedded EXIF, ICC, or XMP data, decide whether to retain it before converting. The -metadata option accepts all, none, exif, icc, or xmp; select only what the use case requires. For example:
cwebp -q 80 -metadata icc image.png -o image.webp
Confirm the converted file contains the metadata your delivery or editing workflow needs. The cwebp manual documents the available metadata options.

Check every target consumer before dropping PNG
Browser support depends on browser and version. Google’s FAQ lists Safari 14+, Firefox 65+, and Edge 18+ for lossy, lossless, and alpha support. Those thresholds are not a complete compatibility guarantee for every project: check the versions your users actually run, along with non-browser consumers such as image editors, build tools, and other applications.
If any required consumer cannot handle WebP, keep a PNG fallback or generate one for that delivery path. Use the WebP FAQ as a reference, then verify compatibility against the project’s own support requirements before removing existing PNG assets.

Use a repeatable conversion checklist
- Classify the image. Decide whether exact pixel reconstruction is required; choose lossless if it is, otherwise evaluate lossy output.
- Convert representative files. Include typical images and edge cases, especially assets with transparency or metadata.
- Compare real outputs. Record byte size and inspect visual quality at intended display sizes; do not assume a fixed reduction from changing formats.
- Check alpha and metadata. Inspect transparent edges and verify the metadata your workflow needs survived.
- Check compatibility. Confirm support across required browser versions and other applications, and retain or generate a PNG fallback where needed.
- Make builds reproducible. Record the
cwebpversion and conversion options in build scripts or documentation so future conversions use the same settings.
Google’s documentation describes the available options, but conversion results depend on the particular source image and settings. Test the files and consumers relevant to your project.
