An image format is a defined way of encoding and storing image data. The format determines how an image is compressed and whether it can have transparency or animation, among other capabilities. Common formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, and SVG; the right one depends on the image and where you plan to use it.
What does an image format determine?
Formats are not just different file extensions for the same thing. They encode image data in different ways, which affects file size, visual fidelity, transparency, animation, and how the image scales. Formats also vary in support across browsers and software.
Most formats discussed here are raster formats: they store an image as a grid of pixels. SVG is a vector format, which describes graphics in a way that can be rendered at different sizes without relying on a fixed pixel grid.
How do common image formats compare?
| Format | Type and characteristics | Good fit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG/JPG | Raster; uses lossy compression | Photographs when a smaller file is useful and some discarded detail is acceptable | Does not support transparency and is not suited to exact reproduction. MDN Web Docs |
| PNG | Raster; uses lossless compression and supports transparency | Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art where sharp edges matter | Can produce larger files than lossy formats for photographs. W3C PNG Specification |
| GIF | Raster; uses an indexed color palette and can show basic animation | Simple animations and limited-color images | Its color palette makes it a poor default for detailed photographs; modern alternatives may be more efficient. MDN Web Docs |
| WebP | Raster; supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation | Web images when broad modern browser support and smaller files are useful | Consider a fallback for clients that do not support it. IETF RFC 9649 |
| AVIF | Raster; supports still and animated images, transparency, and higher color depths | Web images when compression efficiency is a priority | Consider a fallback if support in the target browser or software is not assured. MDN Web Docs |
| SVG | Vector | Icons, diagrams, and interface graphics that need to stay crisp at different display sizes | Represents graphics differently from pixel-based raster formats. MDN Web Docs |
Which image format should you use?
Start with what the image needs to do, then check whether the target browser or application supports your choice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Photographs: JPEG is a straightforward compatible option. For web delivery, WebP or AVIF may be appropriate when compression matters.
- Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and sharp text or edges: PNG is a useful lossless option when preserving detail matters.
- Transparent backgrounds: Use PNG, WebP, or AVIF; JPEG does not support transparency.
- Icons and diagrams that need to resize cleanly: Choose SVG when it is available and supported in the target context.
- Animation: Compare GIF with WebP, AVIF, or APNG based on required support and efficiency.
For websites, the HTML picture element can offer alternative formats and a fallback. Google Search Central lists BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF as formats Google Search supports; that list is specific to Search and does not guarantee support in every browser or application. What is the difference between lossy and lossless compression?
Lossy compression reduces file size by discarding some image information, which can affect visual detail. JPEG uses lossy compression. Lossless compression preserves the image data during compression; PNG uses lossless compression. WebP supports both approaches, so the format name alone does not tell you which encoding was used for a particular file.
