A third-generation language (3GL) is a high-level programming language that lets people write instructions in a more human-readable, machine-independent form than machine code or assembly. Fortran, ALGOL, COBOL, BASIC, C, C++, and Java are commonly listed examples. The term describes a broad generation category, not a language’s programming paradigm or every detail of how it runs.
What does “third-generation language” mean?
In the conventional introductory classification, programming languages are grouped by how closely their notation resembles a computer’s hardware instructions:

This is a teaching taxonomy, not a complete or universally precise account of every language. A language’s generation label does not tell you whether it is procedural or object-oriented, for example; those describe different aspects of a language. FOLDOC defines a 3GL as a language designed to be easier for people to understand, including through named variables (FOLDOC’s third-generation-language entry, last updated May 30, 1996).
What are examples of third-generation languages?
- Early examples: Fortran, ALGOL, and COBOL.
- Other commonly listed examples: BASIC, C, C++, and Java.
These examples are identified as 3GLs in FOLDOC and a Carnegie Mellon University introductory software handout. The label is broad: it does not mean these languages share the same syntax, purpose, or programming style.

How does a 3GL program run?
High-level source code must be translated or interpreted for a computer to execute it. In the introductory explanation from Carnegie Mellon University, a compiler translates a complete source program into machine language before execution, while an interpreter translates and executes code one statement at a time (CMU’s “Introduction to Software” handout).
Those are useful basic descriptions, not rules that every modern language implementation follows through one simple path. The key distinction for the 3GL definition is that programmers write higher-level instructions instead of directly expressing each operation as machine code or assembly.
