Windows PowerShell ISE lets you edit, run, test, and debug scripts in a graphical Windows interface, and its snippet feature can insert reusable code templates into the editor. It remains useful for existing Windows PowerShell 5.1 workflows, but it is not supported in PowerShell 6 or later and is no longer in active feature development. Microsoft recommends Visual Studio Code with the PowerShell extension for current script development.
What is PowerShell ISE?
Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) is a graphical host for Windows PowerShell. Its Script Pane is for composing and editing scripts; its Command Pane lets you run commands. ISE also provides multiline editing, syntax coloring, tab completion, context-sensitive help, selective execution, and debugging breakpoints. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows PowerShell ISE.
Support and version limits
ISE is a Windows component supported with supported Windows PowerShell versions through 5.1. Microsoft says it is no longer in active feature development, though it remains eligible for security and high-priority servicing fixes as a Windows component. ISE is not supported in PowerShell 6 or later. It requires a graphical user interface and does not run on Server Core. For current PowerShell development, Microsoft recommends Visual Studio Code with the PowerShell extension; that is a different editor, not a promise that every ISE workflow transfers unchanged. How to write and run scripts in the Windows PowerShell ISE
Open ISE and a script
On a Windows system with ISE installed, run PowerShell_Ise.exe to start it. The command can also open a supported file, including scripts, script modules, module manifests, XML, and text files. Microsoft documents these startup options in How to Start the Windows PowerShell ISE.

Edit, save, and execute
Use the Script Pane to create or edit a plain-text PowerShell script and save it with the .ps1 extension. ISE also supports related file types such as .psd1 script data files and .psm1 script modules, as well as .ps1xml, XML, and text files.
- Open or create a file in the Script Pane.
- To run the whole file, choose Run Script. To execute only highlighted text, choose Run Selection.
- Review command output in the Command Pane. To stop a running script, use the toolbar’s stop control or press Ctrl+Break.

Execution policy and scripts
Windows execution policy can affect whether scripts run. Microsoft’s about_Scripts documentation notes that the default Restricted policy prevents scripts from running. Follow your organization’s policy, and check a script’s source before considering any policy change; do not weaken machine policy just to get a script to run.
How to create a PowerShell ISE snippet
An ISE snippet is reusable text you can insert into the Script Pane or Command Pane. ISE includes built-in snippets beginning with Windows PowerShell 3.0; user-created snippets add to that collection. Open the snippet list with Edit > Start Snippets or press Ctrl+J.

Create a user snippet
Run New-IseSnippet in ISE and provide a title, description, and snippet text. You can also specify an author and caret offset. For example:
New-IseSnippet -Title 'Write-Log' -Description 'A basic logging template' -Text "function Write-Log {`n param([string]`$Message)`n Write-Output `$Message`n}"The cmdlet is available only in Windows PowerShell ISE. Its parameters and related snippet commands are documented in New-IseSnippet.

Find, edit, remove, or share snippets
ISE saves a user snippet as <Title>.Snippets.ps1xml under $HOMEDocumentsWindowsPowerShellSnippets. You can edit that file in the Script Pane; delete it to remove the user snippet. A PowerShell module can distribute snippets by including a Snippets subdirectory. Microsoft also documents Get-IseSnippet and Import-IseSnippet for retrieving and importing snippets.
Important policy limitation
User-created snippets are unsigned .ps1xml files. Under Restricted or AllSigned execution policy, you may create, get, and import them, but you cannot use them in that session. Importing does not bypass the restriction. Avoid changing policy without understanding your organization’s requirements and the implications for the system.

The version boundary and recommendation come from Microsoft’s VS Code documentation and its ISE support statement. Choose based on the PowerShell version you must support and the editor workflow your scripts require, rather than assuming the interfaces or features are interchangeable.
