Choose the setting’s owner first: use Windows Terminal for the terminal window’s appearance, a PowerShell profile for commands and settings that should run at startup, and PSReadLine for interactive command-line editing and syntax colors. The right choice depends on what you want to change and which PowerShell version and host you use.
Choose the right configuration layer

These layers are separate. A change to Windows Terminal does not set PowerShell’s startup commands, and a PowerShell profile does not change the terminal application’s font. PSReadLine options configure the interactive command line rather than the whole terminal window.
Change the terminal’s appearance in Windows Terminal
Windows Terminal supports profile-specific appearance settings and a defaults section for settings intended to apply across profiles. You can set a color scheme and font face, size, and weight. Define color schemes in settings.json, then assign the scheme to the relevant profile. See Microsoft’s Windows Terminal profile appearance settings documentation for the available properties and configuration details.
Windows Terminal 1.10 and later supports the structured font object. Older versions use separate font properties, so follow the syntax that matches your installed version.

Make PowerShell customizations persist with a profile
A PowerShell profile is a script that runs when a matching PowerShell session starts. It is the appropriate place for repeatable shell customizations such as aliases, functions, variables, modules, drives, and preference settings. Microsoft describes the profile types and their scope in about_Profiles.
Inspect the profile paths for your session
Do not assume a profile is in one fixed location. Paths vary by user scope, PowerShell host, and platform. In the session you want to configure, inspect the automatic variable:

$PROFILE
To see the profile paths exposed for that session, inspect its properties:
$PROFILE | Select-Object *
The standard console host and Visual Studio Code use host-specific profile filenames. Put a customization in the profile that corresponds to the host where you want it to run; a host-specific profile avoids applying that change to unrelated PowerShell hosts.

Add a setting to a profile
Open the appropriate path shown by $PROFILE in your editor, add the commands you want run at startup, and save the file. If the profile file does not exist, create it before editing. The commands take effect in newly started sessions; to apply them to an already-open session, run the relevant commands there as well.
Configure interactive editing and line colors with PSReadLine
PSReadLine provides interactive command-line features including syntax coloring, visual syntax-error cues, multiline editing and history, customizable key bindings, editing modes, and predictive IntelliSense. It supports PowerShell 5.1 and later in Windows Console Host, Windows Terminal, and VS Code, but not Windows PowerShell ISE. Some features require PowerShell 7.2 or later. Use Set-PSReadLineOption to change PSReadLine options. Those changes apply to the current session; add the command to the appropriate PowerShell profile if you want it to run at startup. Use Get-PSReadLineOption to inspect the current configurable state. Microsoft documents the options and color parameters in Set-PSReadLineOption.
PSReadLine color values can be ConsoleColor members or ANSI sequences. Whether an ANSI sequence works as intended depends on the terminal. Choose foreground and background combinations that remain readable in the actual host and theme you use.

Check PowerShell version and host before using ANSI styling
PowerShell 7.2 introduced $PSStyle and engine support for ANSI-decorated output. Windows PowerShell 5.1 does not natively provide $PSStyle or native ANSI styling from its core cmdlets for on-screen output. A compatible terminal may display ANSI sequences produced by other sources, but that does not add the PowerShell 7.2 styling features to Windows PowerShell. See Microsoft’s about_ANSI_Terminals and about_PSStyle references.
Windows Console Host on Windows 10 and later and Windows Terminal are described as xterm compatible. Still, test the behavior in the host where you will use the setting. ANSI escape sequences can be passed through to downstream tools or written into files when decorated output is redirected. PowerShell 7.2 and later removes ANSI decorations when redirecting output.
Make colors readable on your background
PowerShell and PSReadLine defaults are selected for dark backgrounds. On a light background, some defaults may be difficult to read. Microsoft’s light-theme guidance recommends adjusting the relevant $PSStyle and PSReadLine colors in your profile and checking the result for readability.

Troubleshoot a setting that does not take effect
- Identify the host. Check whether you are using Windows Terminal, Windows Console Host, VS Code, or Windows PowerShell ISE; PSReadLine support differs by host.
- Check the PowerShell version. In particular,
$PSStylerequires PowerShell 7.2 or later. - Verify the owner of the setting. Use Windows Terminal settings for window appearance, a PowerShell profile for startup commands, and PSReadLine options for interactive editing.
- Inspect
$PROFILE. Confirm that you edited the profile for the relevant user scope and host. - Check whether the change is session-only. A PSReadLine option set with
Set-PSReadLineOptionaffects the current session unless you also put it in a profile. - Test contrast and output behavior. Check colors against the actual background and test whether ANSI-decorated output is being redirected.
